Could be he wants to rest which is fine by me. Not many players I can think of go to summer league in their third year.

That's what I'm hoping for too. Summer league is just 4 games. That happens to be exactly how many he played in the ECFs. Given what he showed during those games, if I'm Cam (or his agent), I'm saying that he already got his summer live ball reps and would rather sit out SL so as not to risk injury.

    Probably wishful thinking, though...

I am not either but logically, I can see why TS doesn't put Cam in SL but it's all from a trade stance. If a Bradley Beal became available, I have Cam Reddish which statistically doesn't mean much but his playoff run, especially game 6 was massive and his playoff metrics was insane. You got a nice selling point but it's mainly potential. If he doesn't perform elite in this summer league, his value drops like a ton of bricks. The risk doesn't outweigh the reward.

The thing is, if you have zero plans of trading Cam, you wouldn't care about that. It's all about game reps. Which is why he might not be on the trade block but his value as an asset is and that makes him too valuable for Vegas.

That said, this sucks. I am still looking forward to the games and I hope we win it all. This is basically College Park or guys working to be on College Park.

Could the explanation simply be Cam said "Hey, on further reflection, I don't think I'll get much out of summer league at this point. I'd rather work on my body and game separately and save my legs for training camp," and TS didn't feel strongly enough to contest the issue?

Given that Cam is up for an extension next summer (like Trae and Huerter are this Sunday), *he* might have decided that the injury risk wasn't worth it, right??

Why has Partnow referenced four teams (multiple times)?

Am I missing something? I thought it was just Bos-Atl-Sac.

Is there something else that hasn't been announced (maybe what has delayed the trade from going through)?

Dallas--they're treating the Josh Richardson trade to Boston as part of this sequence of moves.

Knight becomes an unrestricted free agent in about 45 minutes.

I've seen in a couple places that the QO deadline was 5pm ET today, so I think it's already passed.

    https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/nba/miami-heat/article253105638.html

Hopefully it's like Mays' QO and we extended it but no one in the media cared enough to check before the deadline passed.

Not sure Brad has that right.

Extending a QO, if I understand correctly, doesn't define whether or not you're going to be offered another two-way or a standard... it's just what has to happen for the team to have the right to match any other team's attempt to take the player away.

I think that's technically accurate, but in reality, I think a QO is an offer of a true NBA contract. So if no other teams offers him a better deal, I would assume that Mays would simply accept the Hawks' QO. I don't think there would be any reason he would end up with anything other than a real NBA contract after this.

UPDATE: Nevermind, see @JayBirdHawk's post below.

Of course, the question now is... when do we hear about Nate? Or will we?

Remember, the Hawks worked out a whole lotta guys that were unlikely to be drafted.

NOW I'm starting to think no news means no offer here. Hope I'm wrong. Because I think some other team is going to take note of him and try to sign him away.

  6. If I'm not mistaken, today is the deadline for the Hawks to extend qualifying offers to Mays and Knight (in addition to Goodwin, who didn't get one). Is that right? If so, any word on that?

I'd say that this is a situation where no news probably means no offer and that we're rolling the dice that no one will try to sign them to anything other than a two-way. But since news of the Goody non-offer made it out, I'm not sure...

Whew! Pray for that man schlenk…it’s way tougher to be an nba gm than nfl gm in my opinion.

You have to be careful not to hand out any bad contracts . Not saying schlenk is but just saying ….

The impact of a bad salary that "only" eats up ~20% of your salary cap isn't that extreme--the Magic were legit threats to win it all in 2009 and 2010 while paying Rashard Lewis more than a third of the cap when his true value was at best half that. It just makes it essential to find a way to squeeze value out of players on rookie scale contracts (e.g., JJ Redick) and the right role players (e.g., Matt Barnes). I think Schlenk has proven he can do that.

But my hope is that the Hawks find a way to frontload Collins' deal so that the heftiest parts hit this coming season and next, before Trae and 'Dre's deals kick in. By the time his contract is up in 2025, the cap will probably be $120M-125M. If we can "only" pay him, say, $22M in the last year of his contract, that's not gonna sink us even if he goes the way of Chandler Parsons.

My favorite part of his game is he's dependable. He's very consistent. It's generally just solid, nothing great, but usually not bad. He's a dependable player like how Luis Scola used to be.

Aight, my favorite move in his repertoire. That better? 😑

I believe I learned from your own post (?) originally, it's an RFA situation and we get to decide whether or not to match.

I think that's right--but they are non-Bird FAs, so we would have to have cap space.

What I don't know is this: if Team X signs one of them to an offer sheet using cap space, are we allowed to match using our MLE or BAE? I think that's the situation we'll find ourselves in, because I think JC's contract or matched offer sheet will be signed before any other team tries to nab Mays or Knight.

  10. It's like FMK, hoops style.

I don't see how it's "easy" to say which one we would let loose if forced to choose.

I feel like the 3-game stretch Cam had in the ECF skewed everyone's valuation. I have to keep reminding myself that he's ALWAYS been capable of brilliance. Consistency is the issue, and it's a big one.

I agree that Huerter has the lowest ceiling, but he also has the safest floor now that he's proven himself a capable defender.

I don't think it's even easy to say Hunter is one of the 2 keepers until we see if his knee can make it through a full season while maintaining his January production. And Jalen Johnson is more likely to cut into Dre's minutes than anyone else's if he pans out, although I do think they all will ultimately draw from the same pool of minutes given the fluid positions of today's game.

If someone put a gun to my head, I'd probably keep Dre and Cam too, partly because of the timing of K'Von's contract extension. But it's a really tough call, because I think there's a good chance Huerter will prove the best among the three at two of the three key wing skill sets (dribble, pass, shoot) that Schlenk values, and because I think his offensive game complements Trae's so well.

Miller and Shaw were Rod Strickland and Iverson compared to Bagley. How he made it into the league is a mystery on the level of the Dead Sea Scrolls and King Tut's tomb...

Pfft. As if. The Dead Sea Scrolls were left by the Essenes and King Tut was murdered by Ay.

Bagley's NBA career is true Unsolved Mysteries territory.

I’m the one who first offered the Coop bet, whoever wants to take it take it: I say he ends up our backup PG before the end of the season, period. I’ll happily lose if we end up drafting an awesome vet like TJ and he succeeds, relegating Coop to 3rd string.

We lawyers need our terms well-defined 😛

Seriously, though, the term "backup PG" is not one that is really easy to define. Is he the backup if, technically, he's the #2 PG on the depth chart, but in practice, he never plays because our second-unit PG duties actually end up being split between Bogi and Huerter?  I don't want to lose a bet where a guy is technically our "backup PG" but spends most nights getting DNPs, so I say no. Likewise, I don't consider him our backup if injuries hit and we're forced to play him for that reason alone.

Anyway, that's why I laid out the terms. #lawyersgonnalawyer

  13. 2 minutes ago, RandomFan said:

Oof, I don't think it happens either, but you might want to consider a few things before making that bet.

First, injuries to Trae or whoever we bring in for #2 PG could easily turn that on its head in a heartbeat.

Second, we don't know who the #2 PG is we are bringing in. It could be that we strike out on all of our targets and end up with someone like Lou again. In that case I could easily see Sharife taking over by the end of the season.

Third, if Sharife fixes his outside shot at any point before or during the season, then you are not keeping him off the floor for long. If that happens then we are looking at a bona-fide stud and future starter.

But like I said, you are probably right, I just wouldn't be so convinced it couldn't happen.

To me, "#2" means he actually is #2 PG on the depth chart, not that he plays #2 PG minutes due to injuries.

If we were in development mode, I could see the other things being a concern. But unless Trae gets hurt and we end up tanking the season, I don't see Nate giving our rookie second rounder the first crack at serious minutes behind Trae.

Who’s taking my avatar bet that Coop will be our backup PG before the end of this upcoming season?

I don't know what an avatar bet is, but I'll take it. If you're saying Cooper will be our #2 before the season is up...no way that's happening.

This is what Schlenk was talking about that he now hits his shots with more fluidity than during the season.

    I didn't see that quote--got a link?

  16. Maybe I'm wrong about his shot. Starting at 1:18...dang. Hopefully that translates to game action. Guess we'll find out in Summer League.

We just played Brandon Goodwin 620 minutes this past season, and he can't shoot either (37.7% FG & 31.1 3P% this past season). Cooper as a 3rd guard is fine, he should get a proper contract. Even if he spends most of the year in the G-League, he can still occupy a limited role. Mays and Knight likely will be our two-way players anyways considering we haven't pursued any undrafted free agents.

Fair point--but our expectations this next year are significantly higher than they were last year, which is why Goody won't be coming back as our 3rd PG. As others have said, LouWill--our 2nd PG last year--might end up as our #3 this year. And that's my point. If Sharife can't contribute yet, then spending a full-on roster spot is risky if we have title-run aspirations. But hopefully his jumper is more serviceable, in which case, sign the man.

We should be signing Cooper to a similar contract as this:

    www.spotrac.com_nba_atlanta-hawks_bruno-fernando-31593_.thumb.jpg.92dd348836918dcd286abe19a7cf857e.jpg

I'm not up on the rules for G-League for players under contract. Am I correct that:

    1. If we have him under a Bruno-like regular NBA contract, that counts toward the 15-player max for the active roster, meaning that's one less slot to use on a vet free agent?
    2. But that's not the case if we sign him to a two-way?
    3. We get Bird (or early Bird) rights if we sign him to a regular contract, but not if we sign-him to a two-way?
    4. If we sign him to a regular NBA contract, we still can send him to College Park full-time without restriction (again, aside from the fact that he counts against our active roster)?

Because here's the thing...fun as he is to watch, Sharife Cooper will almost certainly need at least a full year in College Park before he's playable in anything but garbage time in the NBA. Point guards who are 6'0 in shoes and can't shoot or defend are just not playable in the NBA anymore. If he's playing any remotely meaningful minutes, we're in trouble. I like the idea of locking him down for a couple years and getting Bird rights. We just gotta be prepared for the possibility that that reduces our flexibility to get a playable vet to be our #3 PG.

Although if we go my preferred route of having Bogi serve as the de facto #2 PG, problem solved 😄

I won’t argue with you but if 20/ 12/ 7 is overrated af I’ll have some of that.  I don’t watch him enough to know his true impact maybe you do.

He's not overrated. Big men who can create their own shot, distribute, stretch the floor, and rebound at an elite level are rare. His defense is also better than most people give him credit for. I've never understood why some people hate on Sabonis.
