I'm not so sure it won't work out up there in the Queen City for D-Ho. Limited-dimension bigs (Al Jefferson, Bismack, McBob) generally do just fine with the Horcats. He'll fit in better with that plodding offense so long as Coach Cliff remains in charge. Where I do think it could get toxic is if he fails to eventually take a back seat to Cody Zeller, who ought to be starting but not alongside him.

It will be fun to watch two grinning ATLiens (Dwight and Cam) playing in the same town, from afar.

I don't see why they brought him. Cody is the perfect center for Charlotte's system.

Cleveland, Boston, Washington, Toronto, Milwaukee are probably the only 5 teams pretty much guaranteed a playoff spot. After that....I think it's wide open.

Charlotte will probably finish somewhere between 7-9, but are they that much better than last season? I don't know that Dwight is going to put them over the top.

Miami is probably another playoff team. They've added 1 major piece in Olynyk...does he really make them that much better? They didn't make the playoffs last season.

For as much hype Philly is getting, but what have those young players done so far? Sure, Riddick is a good piece and they drafted a possible star in Fultz...but he's a rook and will have to get used to the NBA first. The team is used to losing.

The rest of the east is garbage. Brooklyn, Chicago, Detroit, Indiana, NY, Orlando...which of those teams are going to have a better record than us?

Heat are definitely a playoff team. A darkhorse in the East. They had the same exact record as the Bulls and now they're healthy and deeper than last season's team.

Pistons got no excuse not to miss the playoffs.

Hornets should make make the playoffs. They weren't that far behind Miami and Detroit last season.

I'd take Orlando (right now), NY (right now), Chicago (right now), Detroit, Indiana and Brooklyn over ATL.

The loss of Millsap is going to really hurt ATL.

The idea that this will not be a long rebuild is based upon a lot of assumptions.  First, they are assuming that Dennis Schröder continues to ascend as a player.  I think this year could be a year where he puts up big raw numbers but still lags behind in the advanced stats.  Why?  Because he's the only creator on the offense this year.   Second, this is assuming that Taurean Prince, DeAndre Bembry, and John Collins all develop into at least key rotational pieces.  Third, this is assuming that the correct pick will be made when you do get that high lottery pick in 2018 and that you can get two contributing players with those two late first round picks, and then again with what will be another lottery pick in 2019 and quite possibly another mid first round pick depending upon just how bad Cleveland is after the native son leaves them again.  Fourth, there is an assumption that these players will all be meaningful contributors within a short period of time.  Fifth, there is an assumption that Atlanta will be able to recruit and sign a high level free agent during the next two off seasons.

I still feel that 2017-2018 is going to be very bad, and with the dedication to youth, I don't see this as a quick turnaround.

I can imagine Dennis would get moved. He'll probably be the Hawks' biggest asset. Schlenk said he is looking for another Curry, Klay and Draymond. Dennis doesn't really fit the Curry mold.

I wonder would Bud try to use Marco in the starting lineup like he did Korver or will he start Baze at SG to try to showcase him.

I trust Schlenk's picks. It'd be neat if they pull off what SAC did, getting 3 guys in the first.

I don't expect ATL to make a high level free agent signing within the next 2 years. I expect growth from Dennis, Delaney, Bembry, Prince an Collins.

I expect vets to play a lot up to the trade deadline. Then, see guys like Ersan, Marco get bought out and maybe Baze/Dennis moved. I think with the current players on the roster now, the system will run smoother.

All he and Josh have shown is when you have a similar basketball apprenticeship (AAU, lowest-level high school competition, no college) you probably will never have a viable philosophy on basketball.  I feel sorry for Steve Clifford.  A year from now his eyebrows are gonna turn gray and get thinner.  Jordan failing miserably as an owner is a running gag so no sympathy there.  Can't  wait until the Hawks PNR him to death and Dedmon holds him under double digits easily.

If CHA have him come off the bench he'll be straight. I can't see Dwight finishing his contract in CHA. I can see him being a buyout candidate in 2018-19.

Sorry but I agree with him. The difference between Pop and Bud is that Pop molds his system to his talent. Bud tries to mold the talent to the system.  The system is only as good as the fit.  You take a hard rebounding, space absorbing big and put him in a system that needs space and gives up rebounds for quality shots.....they don't mix.

I thought Bud was going to adapt to Dwight based on his interviews last summer. However, Dwight hired that shooting coach and he never put into action the stuff he worked on.

This young Hawks team will have to show something on the court before they are major players for big ticket free agents.

Hawks best bet is don't waste

"Just get rid of Baze and Plumblee!" As if it were just so simple for us to be contenders for FAs. Good luck trading them off without taking back worse crap.

I am pretty sure nearly every team has one or player's contracts they'd love to get rid of to make room to sign someone better.

I am curious abt which other teams will have space for signings, then see what advantages we might have over them.

But I don't see any of those players listed above coming here, unless it's in the twilight of their careers like MacGrady.

Hawks better off using their cap space to absorb bad contracts with picks. The cap isn't expected to rise much. A lot of teams will be in the tax looking to shred salary.

CLE, GS, POR, OKC, MIA, WAS, HOU are all in the tax right now.

What he did in college is a bit different than what he is doing now. At Wake Forest a majority of his points came from posting up. Scouts and NBA teams were questionable about whether or not he could play the power forward position, his offensive awareness, whether he could defend at an NBA level, and as stated earlier shooting.

Right now he's making himself look like lottery pick and proving other teams wrong. His activity in the pick and roll is amazing, not just popping or rolling hard to the basket, but also creating space and making plays for others. His defense is better than most thought but could still stand too improve. The encouraging part is that its totally fixable since its more about fundamentals and technique for him than it is about physical disadvantages like speed, size, and athleticism( ex - Isiah Thomas, Kevin Love).

As for shooting, he seems to have a great mid-range shot and could possibly extend it out to three, but I would pull the brakes on it for now during his rookie season.

I would think his best position is C. He could be like a Nerlens Noel type player there.

They got their home town kid ( player ) and by all accounts their fans are happy. Especially since it is really only a two year commitment with the team option. I am glad it worked out for Sap and Denver.

Yeah he's an upgrade at the PF position. He'll probably be even better in DEN since he'll be in his natural position, 3rd option, behind Jokic and Murray.

Ferry getting unfairly fired is the real curse. The 60 win season was a mirage though. That team was not sustainable. DMC left for a deal we couldn't match and thankfully he DID leave because now Toronto is paying him millions for nothing. We avoided his serious knee issues. Horford basically screwed us. Millsap should have been flipped at the deadline this year just like Korver was traded this season. Teague didn't get much in return but at least we got something for him.

We also lost our two top assistant coaches. Our development isn't as good with Quinn and Atkinson gone. There's several reasons why that 60 win season could never be sustained going forwards.

If only Ferry drafted better. Would have been nice to have a Rodney Hood to plug in for a declining Korver instead of trading away Payne.

Or a Draymond Green instead of John Jenkins who could have replaced Millsap if he walked in 2015.

Ferry seemed to have a good short term plan, long term - not so good.

Schlenk studying film of our guys like "meh."  He is proving to be a bit of an a-hole.  I like it.  The Warriors leadership, from ownership to the floor, didn't get where it is by being nice and politically correct.

Right! Great to see a guy in charge who can be unbiased.

THJ to me is just a 6th man, not a franchise SG some Hawks fans are hoping he'll be. He's replaceable.

Hawks have the worst record in the league and in the draft lottery they will get the 3rd pick who will be yet another bust.  Thanks Stink.  Ressler you blew it with this guy.

    It's too early to tell.

Bud's system needs shooters, but it depends more upon passing and spacing than pure shooting.  It is a system that can go multiple different directions, but the key component that must be there is the will to pass the ball to get a better shot.  Part of the spacing issues deal with player movement as well.  Last year, the ball movement declined partly because Dwight Howard wasn't nearly the passer that Al Horford was.  Graham Chappel at PTH had a good article on this issue recently: https://www.peachtreehoops.com/2017/5/23/15654962/atlanta-hawks-assist-numbers-drop-ball-movement

Great point! Ball movement in that offense was underappreciated, especially coming from Pero and Korver. I loved when the bigs set screens too.

I am the bad guy around here because I bring in the truth to delusional people.

    1.  IF we lose Sap for nothing, we will struggle to win 20 games.   Sap is everything that Bud needs as a PF.   IF we replace him with Plumlee, Scott, or whoever else on the roster that you want to name, our team will struggle and probably Implode.   For you fans of the tank... losing Sap for nothing is us tanking and being "Flexible."

    2.  Our GM is clueless about being a GM. Phil Jackson just got fired for his lack of work ethic.  Schlenk has great work ethic, he's just not a real BBall guy.  He's an analytics guy.  So he can't look at a guy and know that a guy is a player.  He can only look at stats and try to put them together.  It's going to be interesting.  But that's not why he's clueless.  He's clueless because he doesn't have a driving belief.  What's Schlenk's driving Belief?  Ferry was the son of a GM, he played, was mentored by Embry and Popp and over that time he developed a driving belief.  Knight Played, was mentored by Donnie Walsh and developed a Driving Belief.  It's these guys who don't have the background and the driving belief that worry me.  These are guys who take their NBA 2k17 teams in franchise mode and look at stats and measurables and have no idea how the guys will work chemistry wise.

    3.  Bud is on the hotseat.  No GM comes in and allows the coach that was there before remain unless that coach has pictures of the owner.  Bud is going to get the Larry Drew, Lenny Wilkens treatment.  He will be allowed to start the season but as soon as Schlenk feels pressure, he will press to have his guys take over coaching.  Hello Mike Brown!!

    4.  We are tanking.  Hawks fans...watch these guys:  Robert Williams.  Michael Porter, and DeAndre Ayton.  We are looking for a generational talent.

    5.  Don't expect big moves in FAcy.  Nope.  Don't see it.  I think we will get guys who can pass the time while we wait on this generational talent.  Maybe Zaza,   Oh yeah... we're not moving Plumlee.

    1. Yeah, if Millsap leaves, ATL will struggle.

    2. It's too early to call Schlenk clueless. I'd atleast give him 3 years.

    3. I doubt it. This roster isn't stacked with talent. It's going through transition from a veteran's team to a young team so expectations for Bud this season shouldn't be high. Now if Bud wanted to be like Doc when he left BOS for LAC because he didn't want to rebuild, then yeah, I could see Bud gone. I'm sure Bud has an understanding of the situation. This team isn't like the Teague/Korver/Millsap/Horford team he walked into.

    4. We'll have to see how they do in FA.

    5. I don't expect any big moves. Probably see some ex-GS guys like Ian Clark on the roster though.

Was Bud's coachng dependent on Korver?

Can Bud win with a convention team?

By what date will Schlenk let Bud go and bring in Mike Brown?

I say Jan 25, 2018...  Right before the ASB.

Bud's system was dependent on shooters. When the shooting got bad, he got bad. Korver wasn't lighting up every night but you could always count on somebody having a big shooting night.

    He could.

I think Bud will be around for a while unless him and Schlenk don't get along.
