I thought about Reef but im not so sure he's gonna be very good. Just my opinion.

Yeah he worked for SAC I believe for a while and I can't say they have the best resume when it comes to team building.

Hawks may need to go the unconventional route like the Warriors/Lakers and hire an agent as GM.

If we sign Millsap in all likelihood we remain a treadmill team. We let him go it increases our reputation of not wanting to pay our players (per Stu Jackson). Millsap's next contract is going to be worth more that what he has made in his entire career up until this point. Think about that.  How do we always end up in the same situation?  We overpaid Bazemore because Carroll left (we likely dodged a bullet there because Carroll maybe more overpaid that Bazemore--Carroll's knees are shot) so do we make the same mistake over again with Millsap because we lost Al. We sign Millsap and we are f*cked. 25+15+30 (at least)  and that is 70 million tied up in our front court where 2 of the players allegedly don't make our team better.   Our two greatest strengths are player development and that fact that our young players are playing well. Bringing back Millsap is a gamble that the young guys will improve enough to make us a threat.  We come to regret not trading him when we had the chance earlier this year.

Question--Can we do a sign and trade?  If he walks what does our money look like?

Either way a hard decision is going to have to get made and I hope they are all on the same page!!!

Hawks could do a sign and trade but teams rarely do it anymore. Millsap could sign with his new team without them giving up assets.

I'm not exactly sure about the money since there are so many cap holds with the other FAs. Not sure if they'll get resigned. I know Millsap got a 30 mil cap hold.

I honestly don't think Millsap was serious about signing in Orlando.  They were basically used as leverage to get the kind of deal he wanted from Atlanta.  And that's what he got almost immediately after it got out that Orlando was going to give him that full four year deal.  Barring a team that's better than Atlanta showing interest AND having the room to sign him, I expect Millsap to leverage the interest of some of these non-playoff teams to get the deal he wants from Atlanta.

Yeah, i'm curious to see who they hire as President/GM. They may have a different vision than Bud and Wilcox. I could imagine if Bud and Wilcox were still in charge, Millsap would get the 5 year max first day unlike what they did with Horford.

Other than re-signing with Atlanta, who are the viable suitors for Millsap?  He definitely wants to get paid, but can he do that AND end up on a title contender?

DEN and SAC. Both have shown consistent interest in him.

I don't think he cares if he plays on a title contender. He almost signed to ORL right after the ECF season.

I could imagine BOS (Horford connection)and BK (Atkinson connection) will approach him.

This team kind of reminds me of the 1998-99 Hawks.  Milsap is kind of like Steve Smith/Grant Long.  Mutumbo like Howard in a sense a good defensive center who was tough to build an offense around. They were aging and the Hawks decided to hit the reset button after a 2nd round loss in the playoffs.  That reset button ended up being I think 8 years before another playoff berth.  I also remember going down to a crisp new Phillips Arena for games where there were tons of empty seats.  With the Braves and Falcons gleaming over their new stadiums, I just don't see how the Hawks can completely hit the reset button.  I think in order to keep some fans in the seats they try to re-sign Milsap.  The question is whether this hurts them more in the long run.  I just don't see how this organization can embrace the tank with all the cool new stuff in town.  People will bail on this team fast.

Attendance got worse this past season. A drop off wouldn't be that noticeable. Hawks were 26th this past season.

No.  He's playing great and will really help the team win a title.   Oh wait, you meant a mistake for the Hawks.  Then yes but for the Cavs it's yet another 'rich get richer' deal.

I would have preferred to see him traded to the West.

We traded him so that we wouldn't have to be forced to let him go in the summer.   We got back Dunleavy Jr.  Coaches Son, Smart Player but IMHO a cheap version of KK.

Was it a mistake... and would we have beaten Washington with him?

No, Hawks are better without him.

After listening to the exit interviews, it's seems like Sap might be out of the door from Baze's tone and it also seems like Dwight is basically silently asking for a trade. Saying, I came to contend.

I think it's time to trade Dwight. Of course, Millsap is due to make his own decision. I don't really care to touch on Bazemore. It's not like the value we would get for him is good and he's not a winning player regardless. It is, what it is.

Tanking to me with this squad is just moving from Sap. This team isn't any good anyway. Just decent and very inconsistent.

Sucks nobody is going to take Dwight. If he's serious about winning, take a buyout. GS could use him next season.

LMAO @ "or brought Pero back".   Seriously?

Even with Pero's "vaunted" screen game, his screens only work if the wings make shots.

Yeah, Pero is underrated. I just hate he was better in the regular season than playoffs.

We have now seen it first hand that every team Dwight goes to ends up being worse than they were before him or they're better after he leaves. I can't believe how disappointed I was with him as a Hawk (on the court) this year and I really hope he's not on the team next year.

As much as I want him gone I want Bazemore gone 100x as much. I can't stand watching him handle the ball and he's just not good enough at anything to even remotely justify his contract.

Also hopefully goodbye to Jose, Thabo, Moose, and Dunleavy. Would like to see Ersan and Hump return and hope Hardaway comes back on a team friendly deal otherwise goodbye to him too. Same with Millsap as I don't believe he's worth the insane contract he might get.

In fact it wouldn't break my heart to see the team start over with Dennis, Prince, Bembry and 1st round pick as the core going forward. We need to get a lot more athletic and not worry about simply fielding a playoff team who can't advance.

I expect Baze and Dwight back. Nobody is going to take those deals especially Dwight.

It comes down to this Millsap situation on who comes back. His cap hold takes up so much of the Hawks' cap space. Hopefully he makes his decision before 4th of July. If I was him I'd leave.

Sometimes a sixth man evolve into a starter. It happened with Harden and even a player such as Kyle Korver when he was with the Hawks. Maybe this is wishful thinking, but I thought  Hardaway being the son of a NBA  player would have given him an edge, but maybe tim Jr. has hit his ceiling as a player and will remain inconsistent and never a franchise player.

This may not be the right system for Hardaway then to be that guy.

You look at Harden and Korver when they got a bigger role, they got the ball more. Here Dennis got the ball in his hands.

  12. 22 hours ago, NBASupes said:

He's a 6th man. Not a starter in this league. Defense is below average and offense is too steaky. Another Nick Young

I agree. I wish NBA had a Franchise Tag because it's going to take a ridiculous contract like Baze's to keep him which is too much for a 6th man.

I'm hoping Bembry takes the next step in his development.

Prince defied the odds being the first rookie to start under Bud, maybe Bembry could be be the 1st 2nd yr player.

I have to agree, time to hit the reset button. I strongly feel Bud is not the best guy to make personnel decisions. He gets too attached to certain players and that clouds his vision on what is best for the team. E.g., Milsap should have been traded last summer once Al left to kickstart the rebuild.

Where the team is currently, isn't a very good place. We have two players who have any trade value (Dennis and Prince) and a bunch of role players, a washed-up Dwight, and a 32 year FA who will command a contract that will paralyze the team in year 3-5.

On the plus side, we do have a few extra picks, but they are of low to maybe mid level value.

Not a great summer to be a Hawks fan, but I still pull for the team. However, Bud and Co need to pull a Braves and build it from the ground up with the right guys that exactly fit what Bud wants to do.

I don't know if any of you hear Koonen on 92.9 yesterday, but one of the things he said really struck me. He praised the Falcons for aggressively going after the guy they want and paying the price to get him (Tak). He then said the Hawks need to take that mindset. That really struck me that Bud and Co are too passive and let things come to them instead of going out and forcing the acquisitions they  actually need to be successful. I hope, Ressler looks at the Falcons and Braves and realizes you have to have a guy that has vision, guts, and freedom to be aggressive to get what is needed for success.

Hawks aren't going to tank while Bud is here.

I don't like comparing to the Falcons because they landed the player their building around in Matt Ryan with a top 3 pick.

Atlanta has to get a top 3 pick and get that player. If that player is Bamba, Porter Jr or Ayton, good. If it's Zion Williamson or Bagley, good but it is not what we have now.

Dennis will have to be that guy. Bud has to find a way to better compliment him.

I understand why he wanted to talk to AJC after Baze and Dwight had a great game because he knew his ass would really have to admit he F'd up with signing Coward and resigning Bazeless. I spent the entire year last year with stats saying do not sign Baze, he's anti success for this squad but you let Bud talk about the nuisance of the game which don't even matter once Al left since he got no one that he can protect his sorry ass anymore.

I also mentioned last year not to sign Dwight Howard since he was washed in Houston and athletically, he regressed to an extreme degree. This is where we are right now. Shameful.

He's going to do something stupid like offer Indy a lot for a rental like Paul George when it's not going to work. Dwight is washed. Paul is getting old and Indy would want Prince who's not worth trading. This team needs to scrap this thing they got and rebuild.

I wasn't a fan of the Baze resigning when it happened. I was fine with HOU overpaying for him but unfortunately ATL wanted him back.

I loved the Dwight signing at first because I thought the offense would evolve but unfortunately this year showed Bud needs stretch bigs for his system to work. He should have paid the money for Horford or brought Pero back.

I highly doubt Wilcox-Bud does a PG13 trade. I expect the team to look the same next season. Hopefully Dennis, Hardaway and Prince become a Big 3 next season.

Trade Baze and a second round pick to the Nets for a second round pick protected through the first 59 picks.

Hmm...Nets could have as high as 34 mil in cap space. Hawks may need to attach a 1st to it like '18 MINN 1st/'19 CLE 1st since Baze would have 3 years left on his deal unlike how SA dumped expirings (Diaw/Splitter) to Utah and ATL respectively.

I'm very curious to see what Millsap's salary demands are. I find it hard to believe any team would pay him a max starting at 30+ mil a year.

Let's appreciate Dennis effort throughout this PO series.

Hes playing arguably the best PG in the east, a top 3 PG in the league and has no business to hold his own against Wall.

I mean you can't even tell who played better throughout the series so far.

It gives me a lot of hope for the coming season. If he trains hard maybe even with Wall or Irving he is maybe able to convert his PO performances to the next regular season. He still has great potential particularly in his 3ball  (which usually gets better throughout the years) and facilitating the ball.

This is the Dennis I was expecting to show up all this season based on what I've seen from him in the playoffs in the past.

I criticized Bud for resigning him early which cuts into this summer's cap space but now it's looking like a bargain.

He'd easily be a max contract player this summer.

Dunleavy was brought in as a role player and by NO MEANS a starter or even a serious contributor.  Moose is a "light" backup 5.  You can call him a 4/5 but that is just a compliment for his effort.  Truly, he can shoot a bit but he isn't solid enough or skilled enough to be a quality 5 or 4.  He's a decent backup.

Calderon can still play - not great but he can play.

Ersan isn't useless but he would be a "garbage time" guy on most good teams.

BAZEMORE - now here is the conundrum.  Big Pay - little production.  IMO it looks like a huge mistake.  We could have kept DMC and not gambled on Baze's athleticism - which doesn't seem to be paying off.

But hey - what do I know?

Carroll can't stay healthy. Prince > Carroll.

    No one is paying Hardaway $16 - $20 million.  He'll probably Get $9 - $12 million a year.

Brooklyn will. They have no pick next season and threw big contracts to Crabbe and Johnson. I'd expect Atkinson due to his familiarity with him try to go after him like he did Lin, another guy he coached in the past.
