    As Free agency Looms...

    How do you treat Sap?

Do you make him an offer early?  Do you let the market decide?  Do you do nothing?

I just think of loyalty. Even if it's not our intentions to resign Sap, do you go to him and let him know that we are willing to SNT him to anybody that he would want to play for?  OR  Do you just let him find his own deal?

Let the market decide. I expect him to be too expensive for ATL though, especially since DEN finally has a legit shot at him.

Now that the draft is over and we are heading to free agency the starting SG position is still a mystery unless we have a top priority in resigning THJ that us fans don't know about but as far as our other SGs go that are currently on the roster Baze, Bembry, our new rookie Tyler Dorsey I don't believe any are capable of being starters right now.

Further more looking ahead at this years 2017 free agency there aren't really any real options for starting SGs...the few out there aren't likely to sign with us other than THJ who I would consider the 3rd best SG in free agency available and though he's restricted the speculation is that the Hawks may or may not match an high offer that some believe THJ will get so that makes him even more of a target for teams that need a SG to go after.

A look at SGs available for 2017:

    http://hoopshype.com/2017/06/15/nba-free-agency-2017-shooting-guards/

Moving on allow me to get to my point (I'm a long threaded poster, can't help it)....I titled this thread are we forced to sign or match THJ this off season because  after looking ahead at next years free agency 2018 I see that we are facing the same issue of not really having many capable starting SGs in free agency to sign (atleast I don't see them as starters). Avery Bradley is the best one that will be available if he doesn't receive some kind of extension. There's others that are intriguing coming off their rookie contracts but they are restricted and likely without a doubt will be resigning or matched by their current team.

    https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2016/09/2018-nba-free-agents.html

The point is I see THJ more valuable than I originally thought! At first I just wanted him back...but looking ahead I think we NEED him back. And before someone says we'll just draft a starting SG remember that bud is known to not play rookies at any position. So we could be looking at acquiring starting SG long term if we let THJ walk.

I wouldn't pay him. He's going to be too expensive for ATL. He's a 6th man IMO. You can find that in FA. Bud needs to develop Bembry.

Post any guys you like that might be value signings.

    1) Donatas Motiejunas

    2) Rudy Gay

    3) James Johnson

    4) Maybe Gallinari?

    5) Patrick Patterson

    6) Simmons

    7) Mirotic

    Any other guys?

Johnson won't be cheap. Gallinari wants the max. Simmons a RFA, it's going to cost money to get him out of SA's price range. Bulls want Mirotic back I believe.

Ekpe Udoh / Dewayne Dedmon for super cheap low minute centers.

Ben McLemore could be another THJ type reclamation project. I suspect he'll get overpaid by someone though. For cheap you could do worse.

Taj Gibson / David Lee cheapish PFs. Ersan might be the best option.

Omri Casspi can stretch the floor as a 3/4. Michael Beasley (lol) for a guy that can randomly get hot and go off.

I think Dedmon wants a big payday after opting out from SA. Lee is out for a couple of months.

Here is your treadmill folks.  I do like the "We want to be exciting" quote.  As I said in another thread be fun again.  Give us the highlight factory.

Any GM can say anything in a press conference. I got to see his actions. Right now, I see they got an injury prone center, Millsap is on his way out so I expect the win total to drop tremendously. I could see Schlenk getting pieces to run Bud's system better but I don't expect the Blake Griffin's, Gordon Hayward's, etc. in a Hawks uniform next season.

He wanted to rebuild/retool against Bud's best wishes and it appears that is what Schlenk is doing. Wilcox wanted to trade Milsap and it appears that Milsap will not a part of this team next season. The most messed up thing is that we could have gotten something of value for him instead of possibly losing him for nothing. It appears that Ressler could have just picked the route he wanted to go and saved himself some money on Schlenk because we are doing exactly what Wilcox wanted to do all along. I would be pissed if I was him.

I get what you're saying but ATL needed a new visionary. I'm not going to act like Ferry was so great but one thing about him I like is he had one job, be the GM and use Bud to create his vision. ATL needed that again and Wilcox wasn't no Ferry.

Schlenk coming from GS gives ATL a different set of eyes, a different philosophy, not a Bud/Ferry guy.

It means that Dennis wants him back and probably is expecting him.   Agreed that doesn't mean it would happen but he doesn't repost it if he thinks the guy's a goner or if he hates playing with him.

I think Tim is coming back because he'll probably be the most cost effective, young option with potential.  Bud has invested a lot in him but i do think he's a borderline starter at this point.  I hope that'll change.

    Dennis got no pull.

I doubt Hardaway will be back. Teams like Philly got cap space and easily offer him the max and don't blink. Meanwhile, Schlenk wouldn't match it.

I'm sure Schlenk could get an ex-Warrior like Rush to come to ATL as a stopgap replacement while Bembry continues to develop or Schlenk drafts his own guy at SG.

I think some are hoping for a complete tear down and rebuild. Like we've discussed in other threads, that could take years, Schlenk did mention 7 years in Golden State. Raise you hand in you like stealth tanks.

    Dennis to Sacramento for #5

    Don't resign Paul

    Let Timmy walk

What are the chances that two of those three things happen?

ps @NBASupes already put in his application for stealth tank captain so the rest can fall back..lol

    IMG_0523.JPG

I think Dennis stays. SAC should get their guy Fox at #5.

    Millsap is definitely gone.

Hardaway is definitely gone. Similar to the Millsap situation, other teams can give him offers that Schlenk will be unwilling to match.

We could trade for Julius Randle to replace Sap if he leaves.  He is better than any big we could get at 19. Hell we might can do a straight trade of Randle for the 19th pick since the lakers are looking for an additional 1 st round pick. If he sucks we let him walk. He is only 22 and made Bud and Co can develop his game.

Lakers want an additional lottery pick, not 19th pick.

    Pacers are dreaming at best.

Yeah, Pacers lose leverage each day. If Bud was still making final decisions I could see Hawks making a move for him but Schlenk doesn't seem like the type of guy who would make a move for George which is the best option IMO.

    Continue to develop Prince.

If PG is leaving, their tanking.  Taking on Baze's contract won't stop the tank.

If you're getting two first round picks and a reasonable contract (Baze's is reasonable if you consider they won't have any other big free agents), then it's  a very good deal.

If the Hawks get to the finals, who's to say that PG13 won't resign.  I'm all for get a star level player, just for one year. PG13 in Bud's system could be awesome.

They got to resign Teague and Miles who will get raises. Hawks won't go to the Finals with George. Need more than that to beat CLE.

    3 & D guys.

A lot of people has already conceded the next 4 titles to the Warriors... But I say NOT SO FAST MY FRIEND..  I was listening to Smitty and the other guys on NBATV try to build teams that could compete with GS.  Everybody has come to believe that it's about star players.  Star players don't guarantee anything.  The real secret to what GS has built and how to built them is toneutralize their strength.  Their strength is outrageous outside shooting and ball movement.   To neutralize that you need 3 and D players at the 2 and the 3 and maybe the 4 positions.   Cleveland had a team built to win the East but not built to compete.  Even Korver is one dimensional and I was suggest that outside of Lebron and Shump, nobody on the team is on the top 50 in defense.

I think that we are built better.  We already have good defenders or guys that could be good defenders.  We need a really good 3 and D guy on  the wings and PG positions.  I think us losing DMC was the beginning of the end after we won 60.  Then we had to rely on Alice to maintain the inside which he couldn't do.   Now Bud has been trying to grow some 3 and D guys... THJr and Baze.  However, we'd need somebody who was really good at it not named Leonard.

The Spurs owe us.  Danny Green is a good 3&D guy that could help us.   I also think at 31, Josh Hart could be available.  I would also like to see if we would consider trading up to pick either

    Frank Ntilikina or Collins.

Green fell off. He can't create his own shot. I wouldn't want anybody from SA but Kawhi which isn't going to happen.

Then no deal. I don't even really care about Paul George coming here. We can "Rasheed Wallace" him for all I care. I just like any idea that has some other team picking up Baze's contract for the next few seasons.

ATL isn't going to get cap relief for Baze. Best case, they just going to have to flip him for another bad contract/s of players that could better fit ATL.

They'd want the drafty picks.  Right now PG is damn near untradeable.  You'll have to match Salaries and Baze's salary matches up with Paul's.

True. I think there's teams out there that are bold that can offer better packages. I'm sure a team like Indy would rather not add bad contracts with picks that won't have a chance to be #1.

PREFACE: Please let's not get into details of new ideas for new trades that might persuade the mods that this thread belongs in the trade talk forum. Please.

This is simply posing the question... if Philly were willing to hand over this year's #3 and the future 1st from either the Lakers or the Kings, in exchange for Dennis, instead of Boston's #1, would you do that deal?

I would. You can replace a PG easily.

Perfect time to try to use this to get out from under Baze's contract.

Baze + a few of those late 1st round draft picks we have . . and bring in George.   See if the Pacers will take something . . anything as compensation.

Or revisit that deal that you offered Indiana at the trade deadline, and see if they'll take it now.

If George bolts at the end of the year, but you can get rid of Baze, we're still good because we'll have a ton of flexibility from a cap perspective.

They wouldn't want Baze. They'd want Prince if anything.

I'm on the fence with Delaney.   He's good at getting a shot off but he's not 20 years old.   His total inability to be a threat from outside 15 feet combined with pretty weak D is a bad combo.  Other than saving money there isn't much of an advantage to having him as the backup vs. the multitude of veteran backup points floating around like will bynum, jameer nelson, dj augustine, that guy from tech that no one talks about.

True. I'm curious to see what Schlenk's player filter will be. Bud had the luxury of having Teague and Dennis for years. Maybe Schlenk could invest for than what Bud did as GM (Hinrich/Calderon).

  17. 10 hours ago, Diesel said:

Utah...  They'd probably take the deal with Baze.  Look at the coaches.  Snyder is a much better X and O guy that Bud.   Bud is a philosophy guy.  It was Snyder's X and Os that made Baze a good looking player to begin with.   The other thing that nobody is really talking abut is that Gordon Heyward has probably played his last game as a Utah Jazz.   Baze comes in and he and Hood would be a 2-3 combo that's athletic and can play defense and can shoot.  This actually allows them to go after PGs... i.e. resign George Hill or going after a PG that can run the offense and be a scorer for them in FAcy (Hello Kyle).

It doesn't make sense for Jazz to take on Baze's contract. They're limited with cap space. Already paying Gobert 20+ mil a year, they got to resign Ingles.

Next summer Jazz could have some cap space with Favors (bad contract) and Joe coming off the books. It doesn't make sense for them to compromise their cap space for an average player (Baze), when they can just move forward with a youth movement since a Jazz team with Baze isn't going to win a championship.

I know that there are many of you who hope that Schlenk is coming in and he will let Millsap walk and we will use the 20 million dollar hole to sign Anthony Davis and trade Baze for 2 future first round picks...

Let me ease your mind.  That ain't happening this year.

Neither will Sap get 30 million per from us.

I think Schlenk is going to bet the Market for Sap is about as good as 25 Million per... and he will give him a 5 year 125 Million deal.

I believe that Schlenk is looking to find fit and he allows Bud to focus on coaching and coaching alone.   SO for this year, we're probably going to look at lot like we did last year and if Schlenk can move Sap in the season, he probably will. The biggest move I see is us getting a BU PG.

I still believe that Dennis and Calderon will be back.. However, I really see us dropping Delaney if possible and picking up either:

Livingston (GS ties), Mills (SA ties) or Collison (prolly best fit).

If we get any of those three guys, I say let the position be shared.  Because we brought in Schlenk, I have to believe that Baze is safe.  However, if we wanted to trade Baze... I know a team that would take him happily and it may work for Atlanta too??  You're interested yet?

    Baze for Joe Johnson!!

The coaches in Utah would know how to use Baze.  Joe is and elder statesman with one more year.  Atl frees up capspace on the move.    Atlanta would get a chance to retire Joe.   Joe could step back and let Prince and THJr grow as starters and Joe can come off and be clutch.

They need to give Delaney a chance. A year in the system, he should be better. I'm sure Bud would love Mack back. I highly doubt Livingston would love. Mills will be too expensive. Collison has no ties to ATL.

Utah isn't going to take on Baze's contract. They're cap space is limited. Joe's deal is a good deal. Baze is bad.

I was thinking Korver as coach like many of you as well. There is an article at the top of ESPN about Paul George and LeBron. Inside that article they discuss the difficulty of retaining Korver, mainly because they anticipate him getting paid 14 million a year in free agency. Good ol' ESPN for you there lol.

Manu got a big offer from Philly last summer. I'm sure however Korver will get an interest from SA, BOS, CLE, GS and pick one of them for a lot less though.

I'm on the bandwagon officially! Let's face it Walton is right...It's time to just start the rebuild show while the Warriors dominate the NBA and while cavs dominate the east.

so ridiculous! The league went from needing at least two superstar players to at the least give a franchise a chance to be a title contender to now needing three superstars plus good role players to even get past the cavs or warriors.

as I throw my hands up! (Literally)....I say f*ck it! We've been struggling to get one damn superstar for years now! There's no possible way for the Hawks and most franchises to get 3!

.......i love Sap but I hope we don't resign him. I hope we trade Baze and Howard. Miss the playoffs and just start rebuilding! The nba is a joke and making the playoffs is a joke when you know your team can't beat these two powerhouses. So who cares about making the playoffs with vet players??? I rather make it with extremely young players if possible and if they continue to get kicked out rounds 1 or 2 at least they are getting experience.

Thanks to Lebron who started the "go play with other stars show" ...now KD who decided to follow in bron brons footsteps the NBA champions have been made up for at least 5-6 years.

Yeah rebuild makes the most sense.
