I'm gonna trust these numbers a lot more than a 7 game sample size this year.

It's fine to defend your favorite players... I think we all do that.  The part that really irks me and I believe with many on this board is that you constantly berate Dre's critics even when they show you that he has not contributed to winning basketball by virtually every conceivable metric out there.  I appreciate the insider information that you bring and your unique perspective on a lot of topics, but the "you won't ever understand because I'm smarter than you" attitude on a lot of these debates (particularly Dre debates) is really off-putting.

Quin currently has a worst winning % than Nate and Larry Drew as the coach of the Hawks.

Woody in his last 3 seasons has a higher win% than Quin.

What is this "Quin Magic" that you speak of?

This is the Quin magic I speak of.  A cumulative .623 win% over a 6 year span in Utah once the players had sufficient time to learn his system.  That is pretty damn good in a city that's not exactly a top tier NBA free agent destination.  Yet you want to throw all that out the window and judge him on his first 30 game stretch with the Hawks?? (and no, I'm not counting last year when he had Nate's staff and running Nate's systems).  We're not even halfway through his first season with the Hawks for crying out loud!

They shot worse from three and we made more.

We still shot better than them overall.. 46.7 to 45.3.  Sorry... but we lost this in one place and one place only...  REBOUNDING.

Well, I would say that DRUMMOND was the main problem, not necessarily rebounding in general.  He smoked our two centers by a 25-11 margin in fewer minutes played.  The rest of the team outrebounded the Bulls by a 29-23 clip.  And yes, we shot a hair better than the Bulls, but the Bulls are a pretty bad offensive team (22nd in offensive rating).  Saying that our offense stooping down to their level as not contributing to the loss is inaccurate in my opinion.  Obviously, the Bulls' defense played a role in that, but we really made some piss poor decisions on the offensive end too.  If ANY of the three guards shoot at their season FG% and 3P% averages tonight, we win the game in spite of Drummond going off.

  4. It should be noted that all three of our top guards shot very poorly this game.  Combined 20-53 (38%) from the field and 8-34 (24%) from three.  Hard for the Hawks to win with those numbers from Trae/DJ/Bogi.  And it wasn't just that they were cold, but all of them made some very poor shot selections as well.  It wasn't ALL about the defense and rebounding tonight.

I'm not saying that Capela don't play.. I'm saying when you feel the need to put in Garrison when Bogi and DJ is already on the court...  Put in Bruno and Move JJ to the 3...

It didn't make sense to see OO, JJ, Garrison, Bogi, and DJ trying to do anything to stop Drummond.

We should have run a big lineup everytime he was on the court.

I agree with that.  The Matthews brothers really are worthless out there.  If you're down big and just need to throw a hail mary to see if Garrison can get hot and sink of a bunch of threes to get you back in the game quickly, I don't mind putting him in the game at that point.  But if the game is close or if we got a lead, I would much rather not see him get any playing time.  And Wes has been ded for a while now.  Not sure why he's even taking up a roster spot.

Bruno is stronger than Capela and OO.  Strength matters in the paint.

But the main thing about playing big, is also playing JJ at the 3.

    That way you at least go 6 - 10 . . 6 - 9 . . 6 - 8

    Not 6 - 10 . . 6 - 9 . . 6 - 5

Saying that Bruno is stronger than Capela seems very debatable.  From watching the games, they seem pretty similar to me.  But I would have to bet that Capela's 22% career rebound percentage and extra height and weight would have a better chance than Bruno and his 17% career rebound percentage of keeping Drummond off the boards.  Now I am all about moving JJ to the 3 and playing some combination of Cap/OO/Bruno at the 4 and 5 in a group effort to keep Drummond off the boards since everything else seemed to be failing.  But I think it's pretty alarming that we would have to resort to using 3 people to stop one guy on the boards.  We really need a tall, beefy dude as an option on the bench for these scenarios, even if he gets a DNP most games.  I'm just trying to make the point that Quin has his hands tied a bit with the current roster construction when it comes to defending really big dudes... I just don't think he should be the scapegoat.

  7. While I agree that I would like to see Bruno used more, let's not pretend he has much of a chance against Drummond.  He's smaller than Capela for crying out loud.  Hard for Quin to "play big" when your "big" guys are 6-8 / 6-9.  Think this is more on the front office for not getting Quin at least one 6-11 / 7-0 option on the bench.

Just finished watching this one. I thought we did a nice job overall of execution and guys starting to understand their roles in the offense. Trae did his thing and tied the record with Big O which was sweet.

I thought OO had another tremendous 4th quarter with a couple blocks late and got Ja on one viciously. Couple really nice dimes from him to both finding CC the 2nd a straight ZIP pass, really nice for a big to big connection, we may have something there with the bigs workin together.

CC was crazy aggressive, loved it early on putting his head down, getting buckets getting to the line and knocking down everything. What is it 16 in a row now? Wow.

DJ was ultra aggressive as well and he made some hard earned buckets throughout.

Loved Bogi with the stand still. That was straight outta the book of the Turkish center @kg01’s guy 🤭.It was cool that Ja happened to be at the receiving end of that one too.

Bey might be expendable. Before it was Hunter but now if a team wants Bey and we can get more return that way let’s do it. My boy gone sour on me. He’s becoming a bit predictable to me. Like I see what he’s gonna do before he does it. I dunno, do any of you see anything like this from him?

Lundy fires away doesn’t he? 😂 That foo ain’t shy I kinda dig the confidence. Good defense from him on Ja a bit.

@AUhawksfan glad you and your daughter got to see the game and passing on the Hawks fanhood to the next gen! 👏 👍

Lets win 3 straight and finish the year 15-17!

    Go Hawks!!!

I've been having the same struggle lately with Bey myself, Spud. I really, really like his hustle on the offensive end, especially with going after offensive boards. He's the kind of guy who can make an impact on that end without necessarily needing the ball in his hands, which is a nice fit for this team when you have Trae and DJ handling the rock most of the time. But his struggles on defense are well documented and is unlikely to improve much. He seems to get tunnel vision when he DOES get the ball in his hands, and he's likely going to put the shot up even if 3 defenders are draped all over him. But it's the coming back down to earth with his three point shot that has really made me sour on him. He really needs to be well above average in that area to make up for his other deficiencies if he wants to be a regular rotation player. And then you add in the fact that he's looking for big, big money in the offseason. I personally would let him walk if we keep him for the full season, but ideally, I would like to deal him by the trade deadline. Of course that would be much more palatable if AJ would have developed the way most of us thought he would, because i think he could be a better version of Bey.

I’ve been trying to figure out who in the world I’m playing this week in the fantasy playoffs, it’s you based on your profile pic. Good luck! The Rams got you off to a good start.

Thanks for the reminder!  Almost forgot to set my defense, lol.  And best of luck to you as well.  Hope you get that silver medal! 😜

@kg01 tonight is the Hawks sandwiched between GT football and GT hoops. No way I’m catching the GT hoops game, but a much younger version of me would have been stoked for this evening.

I feel you Cam.  I'm so pumped for for these 3 games tonight, but I just know my old butt is gonna be passed out by 9:00 😆

  11. For those of you who are much more experienced/educated on the nuances of basketball defense than I, what do you feel is the root cause of our defensive maladies?

    a) Our defensive scheme is subpar
    b) Our players have just been slow to learn the defensive scheme
    c) Our players are a poor fit for our defensive scheme
    d) Our players lack the defensive talent/skillset/effort to make us an average or good defensive team, regardless of the scheme
    e) None of the above (please post what you feel is the true root cause)

My hope is that the answer is "b" and we'll get better as the season progresses, but man, it just feels like we're clueless out there right now.  If the answer isn't "b", then maybe Quin needs to adjust and implement a defense scheme that fits our personnel better... I don't know how difficult that is to do in the middle of the season however.

I've been thinking about this -  With JJ out until 2024, you trade guys like Patty and Garrison for Caruso, not Bogi.

Bogi plays more minutes at SF since Bey is starting.  Not ideal since we lack size, but if we aren't trading for size, improve the relative depth at other positions.

My thoughts exactly.  Free up minutes for Caruso by letting Bogi play the 3 more and giving Bey/Hunter more time at the 4 and less time at the 3.  But oooooffff, would we be small.  Wonder if Quin would experiment more with OO at the 4 and Capela at the 5 in the scenario where Bogi is our 3 to get a little more size on the floor.
