Call me crazy, but if we trade Josh for seemingly random pieces, I think it'll have the Joe effect. People expect us to suck and we're just as good. And Ferry thoughtfully fills the holes with cheap guys who know their roles and who buy in.

What am I missing here? This trade is a reaction to us NOT being able to get Dwight. I still think BKN has a great shot at him, and this trade would help them by clearing Wallace's and Lopez's salary plus adding his buddy Josh.

Dwight must not be a big fan of his family... Oh well. Go get Lopez because I don't think the Russian will take no from Dwight.

I think they do this deal if they have reason to think they'll land Dwight in FA. If they want Dwight, they'd have to unload Lopez anyways, and having Josh on the team might be an additional incentive for Dwight.I have a hard time believing LAL will trade him before the season is over. They've been clear with GMs that he is not available (from reports). In their eyes, it would be admitting to failure and I don't see them doing that in the next few weeks. I think it makes perfect sense for us from a risk standpoint, and it makes sense for Brooklyn from an upside perspective. Looking at who is in the front office of both clubs, the trade seems to fit well with whose calling the shots.

Josh/Zaza/Tolliver for Wallace/Lopez Here's why ATL does it: Lopez. Horford slides to 4 and they become the best frontcourt in the NBA. Our offseason is all about putting good pieces around them. Wallace's contract is rough, but he is still filling a position of need and we try to bring back his old level of play. Here's why BKN does it:Expiring contracts with huge upside. Resign Josh, go after Dwight, and get out from under Wallace's contract. If they are able to get Dwight and Josh together with Deron and Joe, they will be pretty scary. Having MarShon play the 2, and that is a really nasty lineup. Granted, everybody else will be scrubs, but this is the type of team that the Russian wants. Miami who?

The main problem to me is that the Lakers take on Wallace's contract after dumping Dwight and only getting back Josh.I'd love to find a way to get Lopez though...

I don't know if you are lumping me into this category, but in any situation, there are negative elements. I'm not denying that.For example: I'm having my first child, and it's a boy!Positive (and most appropriate): That's amazing! What an incredible blessing!Negative (still true): Wow... You aren't going to have any time to yourself anymore. You will watch less Hawks game, you're life will get complicated. You're stress level will likely skyrocket, and good luck getting any sleep for the next few years.Throughout every newsflash, you continue to focus on the negative. There are times where you are accurate and times where you're reaching, but the dominant theme of this year should be positive (considering the offseason). This year is essentially a freebie. Time will tell if Ferry can build a winner. We've certainly had our years to bitch and moan and that would match the overall state of our franchise. This year is not that year.Due to your proclivity to be negative towards any Hawks event, you tend to miss the greater theme (whether positive or negative) because your automatic thought process focuses on "what is wrong" as opposed to "what is most true." I think that whether posters agree with me on the importance of this season (an extended tryout for Ferry's grand experiment), they will agree on my thoughts on your negativity. It zaps the energy from this board, and while you can argue that there is some truth to what you're saying, we should all seek for what is MOST true. Haha... I'm agreeing with you. It's not hard to do, but to do it year in and year out at a very high level is a big deal. We have not done this yet. We're on the same page.For us, anything above a five seed in my mind is success (for us and us alone) considering we reclaimed a chance at long-term success (when we were at a remarkably unhealthy point as a franchise). This is a piecemeal team with individual players auditioning for a spot in Ferry's long term plans. Everybody outside of Lou, Scott and Jenkins has a decent shot of being moved.I'm certainly not acting as though any of those things are true about Ferry... It's just hard for us as fans to accurately gauge the skill involved for Ferry in the JJ deal. It's plausible that it all fell in his lap, but at the end of the day, it's all theoretical. What we do know for sure is that it was a remarkable deal and that's where the focus should be.

I don't know you personally, but if you were my bud, I'd be worried. We have a comeback win... What do you see? Fragmentation and a losing streak tomorrow. In everything, we have the choice between seeing the positive or negative. It's your choice. And it's pretty unfortunate how often you seek out the negative. It's annoying for us, but it must be worst to look at the world from that perspective. Be positive... It's there if you look for it.

You are dead wrong... You do agree with me :) I said a successful franchise year after year... Our difference is simply semantics. I have no qualms with what you said here, but there is one thing I want to say as food for thought.Being fans, we make a lot of assumptions about how things go because we're on the outside looking in. Certain things like locker room chemistry, personalities, trades, relationships... We can make inferences based on limited knowledge. Often times, we're right, but not always. There's only so much we really know.Why do I bring this up? The attribution of luck to Ferry's Joe deal seems unfair, and here's why. You might be right or you might be wrong. But we cannot see the negotiations. We weren't privy to those conversations. We don't know the personalities involved. Based on our perception of the Nets owner, we can assume that they were desperate for a superstar and that Ferry didn't have to do much to make it happen. But what if the Nets were remarkably skeptical for months and he came in and made the perfect argument? What if he convinced them that Joe and Deron were a match made in heaven through statistical analysis? There is a little bit of luck in everything (driving to work without a drunk driver in the lane next to me) to varying degrees. From our vantage point, it's inconclusive how much skill it took for Ferry to do his thing.All we know that it was a great move, and he's done nothing to suggest he won't be a good GM. It's a small sample size, but it's all we got so I say lets be optimistic!

Please work on being more concise as you bring a lot to the table, but I am less likely to read it if it goes on for days.Two qualms I have:1) All of my posts have been made regarding what he has done up until this point as a GM. I have not at one point predicted greatness for him, but he has done a masterful job to this point by unloading contracts that we all viewed as untradeable. In addition, the acquisitions (while primarily viewed as a tool to rebuild) have been crafted in a way that allows us to be competitive this year. Therefore, I am not making any predictions on what he WILL do. He is communicating what a lot of us feel, and he's done an incredible job so far. What do many posters here has been misinterpreting is that I am saying his success thus far has any barring on his future success in Atlanta. There are reasons to be optimistic, but I'm not predicting anything (positively or negatively).2) It is really hard to have a successful franchise in the NBA year after year. With that in mind, efforts to get to that level will often fail. That doesn't make it inevitable that we will never reach it. I'm just grateful that this GM is moving us in a better direction by unloading major contracts that nobody envisioned we could unload. In addition, he had a nice signing in Lou and has some talent to build off of. I'm not saying he will or won't succeed, but it's nice to know there is a possibility that we could have a solid franchise because as of this time last year, we were doomed for mediocrity for the next five years if he wouldn't have pulled this miracle off.

While I don't agree with the way he handled it, it is laughable that you can describe him as a delusional Cubs fan because he isn't as negative as you are. Last year after the playoffs... I get that. Now? It's time to grow up and stop acting like a child.

We can all throw around theories, but nobody has any idea about what Ferry will do. Because of the way our team is structured, he will have lots to do. However, he is keeping this close to the vest and as another poster said, many are projecting what we want or think will happen.The silver lining is that he sounds as though he's processing everything in a very systematic way. Time will tell whether those decisions will pay off.

I wouldn't go to the lengths that atljonesbro did, but it's gotten pretty absurd. The theme of rebuilding being synonymous to taking the focus off of winning is a ridiculous argument. You have to be able to think in different time horizons. Short-term restructuring is necessary to get long-term growth. Just because short-term reconstruction isn't fun and can result in repeated failure down the road, that doesn't mean you pout and say we're doomed or make it any less necessary. We should have been declared bankrupt, but somebody let us off the hook for millions in loans, and we've got a chance to put together a good business. After the bankruptcy hearing, no CEO would sulk and say "we'll never be as good as so-and-so in a few years." You would be freaking ecstatic, and that's how Hawk Nation should be. I will continue to wear out these analogies until it sinks in for you Negative Nancies. We've had many years when sulking was the appropriate response. Now is NOT that time.
