Official Game Thread: Hawks at Cavaliers -- IST Game #4

AJ’s fall is mind boggling. Regressing defensively isn’t a surprise but many of his looks couldn’t be more wide open: he was automatic on those last season. Sh%t is depressing I had high hopes after a 47/ 39/ 89 rookie season how could you not?! -

Hawks are 3rd in offensive rating at almost 120 per. Unless that elite offensive Big is 7 feet and a great anchor/ communicator I don’t value any extra offensive firepower. There are only 3 in the league anyway in Chet, Embiid, and Joker, neither going anywhere soon obviously. Any above-average team will still outscore the Hawks when Trae is playing 36 minutes no problem. -

I’ve always liked OO but he isn’t any type of answer as a BU tweener who can’t play make nor stretch and only excels versus Bigs who like to play on the perimeter some. End of the discussion that involves him. -

Them boys scored half of their 128 points in the paint. Clint’s role is now a BU on a strong defensive team, yet he’s starting on a dreadful one. Hawks needed a high-impact, young, True defensive C and an on-ball defender who can guard 1-3 at the start of the season, I would hope it’s painfully evident to Fields now. Question is how empowered is he to do anything about how porous the defense is? Ressler is getting great home attendance he could care less. -

Hawks weren’t supposed to win so they didn’t. It’s gonna be a tough road without Jalen’s rebounding, size, efficiency, floor running, and passing decisions. Damn…that’s quite a lot. Trae is now 5-6 (-4 total) versus Darius Garland (+11). Donovan Mitchell has gotten incrementally better on both ends and has always been underrated as a passer. I didn’t care for him in Utah but he’s a beast now. -

Trae has made more standout defensive plays in transition this season than the rest of his career. -
Official Game Thread: Hawks at Celtics (6 PM Tip!)
benhillboy replied to lethalweapon3's topic in Homecourt
Derrick White is now 9-2 versus the Hawks (regular and post) in a Celtics uniform at +103. Damn. Celtics just on a whole different level. They helped account for missing two great starters with two guys who never play and got plus minutes outta them. The way Tatum is shooting and rebounding it’s high time he get the Celtics over the championship hurdle as the clear favorites.- 177 replies

We just can’t have nice sh#t bruh. His loss will certainly be felt. He’s the only player on the roster with a + offensive and defensive box. I have no confidence that Dre and Bey can account for his absence. Luckily the schedule through December isn’t daunting at all.

I had to do a triple take at Trae +40. Godd@mn. Hopefully JJ isn’t out for an extended period.

This was supposed to be a scrimmage, glad the Hawks didn’t add any unnecessary drama as the Wizards never led. Real test tomorrow.

The first individual defensive metric I check is defensive box. Herb Jones, Tatum, Derrick White, PG-13, and Jrue are the starting predominantly wing guys ahead of McDaniels (+1.1) who are known stoppers, a couple statistical outliers in SGA and Mitchell who play alongside at least two other excellent defenders. Kyle Lowry, Kyle Anderson, Cam Reddish, Caruso, Josh Hart, and Thybulle off the bench. No one would argue that all those guys are top tier (Cam when he focuses). Lebron, Kawhi, and Jimmy all play a hybrid type wing/ paint style now and can lock down whenever needed. The first two just have to maintain focus on boxing out. Bogi is the highest Hawk at -.1. He’s not helping but he’s not hurting the defense like he usually has. That’s my best guess as to why his minutes are below his career average: to maximize his defensive effort while out there. I still think 26 should be 29.

Magic were missing two starters and just smashed the Celtics. Them boys might be for real. -
That was epic and crucial looking at the final score. Giannis type sh%t.

@TheNorthCydeRises you’re officially “winning” our bet. It’s pretty crazy with worse effective and true shooting than last season he’s at .143 WS/48 and 121 O Rating. Increased minutes, FTs, and assists seem to be giving him a boost along with his recent three point barrage going 15-30 in the past 3 games. Despite nonexistent rebounding his spike in steals are really helping his and the teams’ metrics, adding crucial possessions to their already torrid pace. I never thought I’d see him approaching 2 per game but here he is. I’ll gladly fork over the “basketball cards” if he can maintain these metrics with decreased minutes. Even with his excellent track record of availability 36+ minutes is too many for anyone. The main advantage to having great bench depth is to keep your starters around 31 minutes and fresh for down the stretch and into the playoffs.

Any serious analyst knew OKC was gonna kick ass. As long as Isiah Joe shoots well they’ll continue to do so, he started off slow. He’s like Miami with Duncan Robinson: if he’s on you can hang it up. I can’t believe in the Wolves’ chemistry until they win an actual series. Then I’ll buy it. It’s gotta be nowhere but up for Memphis, so surprised at their terrible start. GS should get it together if Draymond can stop acting a damn fool. Miami went on a surge and all they did was take Thomas Bryant out the lineup (duh) and lose Herro to injury. Don’t know why they didn’t get value (ie SIZE) for that dude this summer.

Lots of ups and downs in the game but Trae’s ridiculous shooting in the first quarter was the difference IMO even more so than his OT scoring. I thought Gallo’s three point record was going down for sure but it didn’t. Bob said he had been putting in extra work on his shot, needed every one of his 43 tonight seeing how we’re oh so challenged defensively. I’ll never be a fan of the kid but always marveled at his offensive workload and availability at his size. I wish like hell he would’ve had a special young coach like an Udoka, Taylor Jenkins (he’s gonna get Memphis in order soon), Nurse, or Daignealt in his formative years. His floor game would be twice as good.

That boy Devin Booker got the cheapest looking signature shoe in the history of the NBA You could find these in Famous Footwear 25 years ago for $37.99. -
Back to .500, woo-hoo! Quinn’s awareness of managing minutes is so shaky. Best starter +/- was DJ at 0. Worst bench +/- was Bey at +9. Anyway a win is a win, can’t expect this team to do it pretty and without raising your blood pressure.
