We are conflating a few issues here.

First, we have a system issue for the league.  The players today have the right to go whereever they want in FA for whatever price they can negotiate subject to the league salary rules.  The max salary rule is a huge problem because it allows teams to stack multiple MVP level players on the same roster for approximately the same price as a Joe Johnson type player.  The league also currently has zero intention of enforcing rules prohibiting players from colluding about future team-ups while they are under contract.  All that is a system problem that leads to stacking of teams which both disenfranchises many teams from even becoming viable and also sidelines would-be competitors into clear also-ran status.  The players aren't to blame for this systemic issue - that is a function of the league and union and they need to fix it because it erodes fan interest when the perception is that the playing field isn't level.  Whether the playing field is being unleveled by the players or management isn't the issue - it is a fundamental fairness concern for the entire NBA product.

Second, players have the right to absolutely pick what teams they go to but fan backlash is going to be something they have to live with.  That backlash is not the same as "shut up and play."  When a guy like KG is winning in the WCF 3-1 against a team and then plays poorly and ends up loosing the series 3-4 and then joins the defending NBA champs that beat him there is nothing demeaning about fan backlash.  He backed down from a challenge and that affects the perception of him as a competitor and rightfully so.  Players do run the risk of getting traded like Blake but that isn't an issue for a guy like KD because he has the leverage to negotiate a no-trade clause.  Even guys like Ilyasova can get that protection so it isn't impossible by any means.  Pity the players who don't have that leverage when they get dumped like Boston dumped IT but don't excuse someone like KD because of that.

Third, how can you argue that Oklahoma had no chance of winning if KD stayed?  They made their second conference final in 3 years (after previously making the finals) and literally had the series against GS in their hand and coughed it up.  A big reason they coughed it up was that Durant shot 38% from the floor on 31 attempts and 27% from 3pt range in Game 5 and then 32% from the floor on 31 FGA and 12.5% from 3pt range at home in Game 6.  They were up 3-1 and spit the bit.  How much more viable as a contender can you get than that?

Yes it’s a system issue. But it’s also on the owners I feel bad for Davis if he leaves New Orleans then he’s a bad guy,if he stays he’s foolish there’s no middle ground given.

No trade clause are hard to come by. The problem was the short term deal signed.

I didn’t say they didn’t have a chance. Everybody knows they choked but obviously something wasn’t rosy in OKC. Given the circumstances Anybody else in the same position would do the same. You aren’t going to exactly sign with the kings in that situation.

Agreed.  No different than Magic, Worthy, Kareem...Bird, McHale, Parish...Jordan, Pippen, Grant/Rodman...etc.  All those teams were put together organically with trades, draft picks, and arms length bargaining.  The whole "let's talk about competing against the team that is currently paying my contract" stuff is a more recent and much more sinister development for competitive balance in the league.

I give you the easy way argument although I contend he didn’t see himself winning with what okc laid in front of him and to some degree him and Westbrook dynamic.  Also I don’t blame the players  an organization will trade there ass as soon as it’s benificial to them. What LA did to Blake if I were him I’d be pissed the mantra of shut up and play is kinda played out. Same thing with illysova I was pissed but I don’t blame him that he balked when they even mentioned trading him to a place he didn’t want to go.

With all the rFA's still unsigned with seemingly no interest coming, I'd bet that "rumor" was made up.  Couple that with Slink saying specifically that they would not do that, it reinforces my belief that it was merely planted by Lavine's folks to drum up interest.

Also, Lavine isn't intriguing because he's not really a shooter plus plays no defense.  Not a fit IMHO.

Nah, he'd be a malcontent here and a negative influence on the whole program.  Thus, would not be a piece trade-able for assets and we would likely not want to re-sign him.  Serves no purpose for us.

The real person at blame here is his agent who apparently killed a s-n-t deal to POR because he's Nurkic's agent too.  Seems like he was trying to make sure he got paid by both of them getting new deals.

Boogies a lot of things probably neither of us knows but I think that a lot of the stigma against him has to do with Sacramento who hasn’t been really a model franchise since the Webber, Peja, bibby days. Plus that whole George Karl thing less people forget Karl went at Ray Allen also.  I think boogie is fiery and has a desire to win  I see nothing wrong with that.  And I would love him in Atlanta over some of the recent bigs that have rolled through Atlanta outside of Dedmon, Howard, Ivan the knock your block off for thinking it and al a little bit though I hated horford for his lack of rebounding toughness. And yes I said it excuse my language but f*** muscala, ayton, Tavares, plumlee and all the rest of the bums that have been a disgrace.

Wiggins defense starting in Dec. was better. The whole team's defense started getting better as the season went on. Another year under Thibs should have them even better.

It’s funny cause butler kinda rubbed some of his young bulls teammates the wrong way him, wade and ironically rondo. Veterans expecting young guys to suddenly come on to there level because you signed with them. My thing act like you’ve been there before show them the right path.

Also the boogie thing is getting more intresting

I blame the other 29 teams my hawks included.

boogie would not have had a impact on our winning  probate return in January and then we coulda eased him in and we had space seems like a low risk high payoff if it worked. Alas we are stuck paying plumlee.

Basically what I’m saying. Durant is a wuss. Good we are on the same page. You can’t have a top 2 player in the league be a Robert Horry ring chaser.

He’s a wuss because he decided that he didn’t see the light at the end of whatever okc was shooting for when they let harden go. The guy has taken less to actually stay on top or to help him win. If I’m not mistaken his first free agency he didn’t take the most then either. People have a problem because he choose the warriors if he had left okc and went to any other team it wouldnt be much of an issue but he choose the warriors.  It’s like everyday life we choose the best opportunity for ourselves to make us comfortable. Also Malone while loyal to Utah choose the same avenue choose to head to the Lakers but it imploded.  Garnett said it best if I knew what I knew when I was younger things would have been different. The cousins fiasco is on the other 29 teams  cousins says he called the warriors himself after not receiving interest that was to his liking.

The bad contract with Dallas isn't much of a motivator for me compared to the pick(s).  If the choice was Bazemore for Dallas's expiring salary dump then I would much rather have the pick (even with four years of one-sided protection) than save one year of Baze's contract.

Trading 34 struck me as strange given that I value those 31-35 picks a ton more than the ~45 second round picks.  If we didn't want to take on 4 rookies then I'm curious what he plans to do with our second round picks next year.

Stash em on guys that maybe one or two will make it over.

  7. 8 hours ago, AHF said:

That makes literally no sense.  You could have taken money off the table 100% before you start reducing the remainder with offset of other salary.  For example, if he was due $6.5M per year then conceding half of that leaves you owing him $3.25M per season and the new contract he signs further reduces via offset so there is no conceivable circumstance where you aren't better protected financially by getting him to take a haircut in exchange for being allowed to walk.

Moreover, you could have put other conditions on his departure.  A common one is a non-solicitation provision where he will not solicit people employed by the Hawks.  That would keep him from poaching our staff and coaches unless we agree to it in advance.

There were just so many easy gets here and it isn't even like we would be unreasonable to ask for them.  Bud literally is getting paid 100% of his salary to coach elsewhere when we could have him working in a film room.  We gave him an incredibly big concession by letting him walk and got zero in return.

I was reading hoping that was ressler stepping in and saying just go away. I was arguing the same point. If Schlenk forced a bad contract on Dallas this deal look much better. As is it eh what’s the worst that could happen. I hate the C’s but Schlenk could use a little Ainge tactics in his negotiations. The just outright trading 34 it was like my god what the hell are you doing.

  8. If we move Baze I would kick the tires on mccaw. He’s young a defender and golden state may not pay much as they are facing luxury tax he’ll even before Durant is resigned. Noel intrests me but for the right price. He’s a defender and after being effectively ostrizized by Dallas could be a buy cheap prove it type. I think it takes the max that Capela can get to get him here and I don’t care for him. The rest of our space take a bad contract for future capital.

Yeah, Orlando has to be the prime destination for Dennis. Maybe a lotto protected future pick and bad contract gets it done.

Phoenix still has Knight who they have no use for. Maybe they throw in Warren with Bridges now on board

They got okobo who I think is very underrated. I like melton for defense and Simons from an offensive perspective but okobo is and should be pretty good. They still have knight so they can let him grow with the team they have drafted.

Well, yeah they did want Doncic bad, however, Schlenk wanted Young just as bad. There were no secrets in this draft. Social media had it all spilling out. I wish they could have compromised top 4, I wonder why NBA teams make it those protected odd numbers like that.

Dallas is going to be bad, it's no way around that. Sac and Pho will have better records than them, I'd put a shiny coin on that.

They'll being battling with Atl, Orl, and perhaps Cle for the worst record in the league.

Speaking of I don’t know what the hell orl is doing. They have prolly the biggest hole at pg and didn’t address it. But in another thought they clearly still have a need and we may get a decent offer from them for denis. That’s my hope at least with that.

As is typical for Atlanta fans....here's hoping for next season. Maybe we'll get lucky in the lottery and be able to grab the top SG with our own pick and one of the top centers with Dallas's pick. I fear however the Dallas pick will be early teens.

Doubtful. While injuries, and attrition will play some part. Unless Lebron and a cousins goes there and cousins is healthy I don’t see them jumping

    GSW

    Hou

    portland

    okc

    utah

    NO

    SA

    Min

    Denver

    Clips

I think there will be some movement but Dallas has a lot of teams to jump.  More than likely the pick should convey.  My big riser is Denver I think they can make some noise. Then account that LAL and Phoenix will prolly improve. They are really going to be in dog fights. Spurs may take  a dive because of other things but I’ve learned to never truly count them out.  My hope is Dallas doesn’t respect the tank athon of last year.

I also have a suspicion that if Okobo had been there at 34, we may have taken him. He was linked to us as high as 30 in one mock. Three had him going 21st and two others had him going at 23rd.

    https://hoopshype.com/2018/06/21/nba-mock-draft-final-consensus-top-prospects-update-rumors/

I could see it. The funny thing is he didn’t even bother to get a stash player ( even though I hated that idea) so that makes some sense.

The two players they were looking at were Kevin Huerter and Lonnie Walker Jr.

By most accounts Walker was the pick he was targeting before the spurs took him. So we took the guy they had rated next.

The Hawks haven't had anyone with this scoring potential in 25-30 years. That should be something to be excited about.

ISO joe, terry surely I’m missing someone else but point remains that’s not true.

    B. None of the guys look bad on cut clips. Trae more talented than anyone else that they ever drafted. Ain't bad. Only time will tell. Omari is the only one who can truly help right now. I hope they play Trae at SG some to built up his off the ball skills.

I thought he was being cute with that him an denis playing together crap.
