The Amico Report (7-24-03).

http://www.insidehoops.com/amico-072403.shtml

ATLANTA: Apparently, the idea is to save money by dumping Robinson's contract and picking up Brandon's, which expires in January. Other than that, the Hawks could use an owner, a new coach, and most of all, some kind of plan. I've come to like the Hawks, largely because no one else pays them any attention. But I have no idea what they're doing, and I'm not real sure they do either.

THE DAILY (7-24-03).

Atlanta - Whooo! Now THAT was a big trade. And look, we bring in a point guard who can tutor Dan Dickau and-- what? He's never going to play again? It looks like the Hawks have now publicly admitted that Big Dog was not a good fit on the team. It's long been contended -- fairly or unfairly -- that he is a locker room cancer. There is no questioning that once Brandon's contract comes off the cap, Atlanta will be in better financial shape.

Free agent guard/forward Charles Smith, who appeared in three games for the Blazers last season, averaged a team-high 11.5 points a game in leading the Atlanta Hawks to a 3-3 record at the Pro Summer League in Boston. Guard Dan Dickau was Atlanta's second-leading scorer, averaging 10.2 points, and Corey Benjamin, the former Oregon State standout, averaged 8.0 points and 10.6 minutes for the Hawks.

SI.com’s Trade Analysis (7-23-03).

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/basketbal...trade_analysis/

Why the Hawks made the deal:

They wanted to save money. The Hawks are for sale by owner AOL/Time Warner, and the Big Dog was due to make $22.7 million over the next two seasons. Brandon is due to make almost as much, but he’s planning to retire because of a knee injury. His contract then can come off the books in February, enabling the Hawks to save almost $20 million off its final payroll at the end of the season.

KEY COMPONENTS OF THE TRADE (7-23-03).

Atlanta Hawks

Comments: The Hawks pick up Terrell Brandon from the T-Wolves, and a first-round pick and little-used reserve Randy Holcomb from the 76ers. The team sends Glenn Robinson and a 2006 second-round draft pick to the 76ers. Brandon's situation is still unclear, but it appears he may be forced to retire with severe knee problems. Hawks fans are probably happy to see the Big Dog gone. He's a terrific perimeter shooter, but shows no enthusiasm on the defensive end.

Blockbuster NBA trade complete (7-23-03).

Brandon, 33, was forced to sit out the 2002-03 season because of injuries. He was also limited to just 32 games during the 2001-02 campaign for Minnesota and averaged 12.4 points and 8.3 assists per contest. He underwent arthroscopic surgery in February, 2002 to repair a cartilage fracture on the surface of his left femur.

The deal provides Atlanta with some immediate salary cap room to pursue other possibilities, creating long-term flexibility for the team.

"We feel strongly that we need to make some fundamental changes to our team and this will enable us to do just that," Hawks director of basketball operations and interim general manager Billy Knight said. "Whether it’s the rest of this summer or next season, we will now have more options than we would've had had we not pursued this opportunity."

Brandon has also spent time with Cleveland and Milwaukee during his NBA career and has averaged 13.8 points and 6.1 assists over 724 contests.

So Knight thinks the Hawks can compete this year.lol

he's bonkers.

The problem is that after JT is resigned to a bloated

deal and a few filler players are resigned the team will

be capped out again and still will not be able to improve

in the future.
