A superduperstar can up the worth and attractiveness of a franchise so that someone with real money (and, perhaps, a clue) will want to pry it from a lousy ownership group. See Reinsdorf, Jerry [1985] and the lawsuit-laden, stuck-in-the-mud Chicago 'spirit group' (including Steinbrenner and Lamar Hunt) that couldn't sell out even with a prized rookie Michael Jordan marqueeing Chicago Stadium. Reinsdorf canned then-GM Rod Thorn within a week of buying the team, and set in motion (with new GM Jerry Krause) the championship-quality moves that made the Bulls DA BULLS.
