  1. The Hawks have been doing great recently, and I tend to stick with the theory of not messing with success, but it wouldn’t hurt to trade an underused player for someone who could fill a void for us. The Hawks success seems to be due to our efficient offense (4th best FG%) and our rebounding (8th best rebounding difference), but our defense is not spectacular (18th best in opponents’ FG%). Indiana, on the other hand, is 21st in FG% and 8th in Opponents’ FG%. If anything, they could use a little bit of a boost on the offensive end, and the two teams are good fit for a minor trade. In comparing Zaza and Foster, we see that they would be a good switch: Zaza: 1. Scoring: Pushes the ball inside and scores timely points that kill opposing teams’ momentum. (When he is given the minutes.) 2. Rebounding: When last year’s numbers are adjusted to starter minutes (35 minutes), Zaza was on pace to get 10 rebounds a game (10.4) 3. Defense: Zaza is about as lost on defense and Jeff Foster is on offense. Foster: 1. Scoring: Foster is about as lost on offense as Zaza is on defense 2. Rebounding: When last year’s numbers are adjusted to starter minutes (35 minutes), Foster was on pace to get about 10 rebounds a game (9.7) 3. Defense: Although, not a dazzling shot-blocker by any means, Foster is an effective one-on-one defender against opposing bigs. Thus the two teams gain the following: Atlanta: 1. Trading a player that doesn’t receive the minutes to score his points for a defensive big man that can come off the bench in a limited role and help with the 7 footers that have given Horford problems in the past. 2. Receiving near equal rebounding quality in return 3. Gaining another veteran presence Indiana: 1. Gets an offensive talent for defensive 2. Gets a role player that can help them keep momentum 3. Gets near equal value for rebounding 4. Gets a younger player that is about to be 26 for a player that is about to be 33. 5. Gets more bulk inside (275 pounds). 6. Would actually get a 2nd round pick to push this trade through if they wanted it, because I really want someone who can come off the bench and disrupt 7 footers in the play offs.
  2. Hawks-Magic ‘really nice matchup’ for TNTShareThisPrint E-mail By Ken Sugiura The Atlanta Journal-Constitution When the NBA and TNT met last spring to discuss the regular-season schedule, one topic of discussion was the Thanksgiving Day game. When the NBA came back to TNT with a Hawks-Magic suggestion, Vandegrift said, “We thought, ‘You know what? As far as two up-and-coming teams, the Magic and the Hawks, you’ve got young, athletic guys, [Al] Horford, [Josh] Smith and of course [Dwight] Howard, this would be a really nice matchup.’ “ It’s the Hawks’ only TNT game of the season. TNT had Horford come in this past Thursday to talk up the Magic game. Additionally, the Hawks will debut their alternate road jerseys (red with “ATL” on the chest) for the 8 p.m. game. “It’s a great story,” Vandegrift said of the Hawks’ start. “You really kind of want to nudge the country, saying, ‘You don’t want to really miss this. This isn’t smoke and mirrors.’ “ It’s worked out pretty well for TNT, which, entering Friday night’s games, had one team with the top record in the NBA (Hawks) and the other tied for second in the Eastern Conference (Orlando). It’s a lot better than last year, when TNT had Washington and Orlando, only to have Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas have a surgical procedure on his knee knock him out for most of the season. “We went into the season thinking, ‘Boy, we got the Wizards. We’ve got Agent Zero,’ “ Vandegrift, referencing Arenas’ nickname. “The only thing that worked there was the word zero.” Above-average Joe By averaging 20 or more points in his four seasons with the Hawks, Joe Johnson’s reputation as a scorer is secure. However, he showed off his considerable defensive chops this past week. Principally assigned to Portland guard Brandon Roy and Miami guard Dwyane Wade, both All-Stars, Johnson held Roy to 17 points (three under his season average going into Friday) and Wade to 15 (12 under his average). Johnson scored 65 in those two games. “I’ve got to make the catches tough, make the shots tough,” Johnson said. “That’s not easy. And try and come out and score on the offensive end. It is definitely a lot of work, but it’s a challenge I’m willing to take every night.” Smith not left out Smith has set as goals for the season to make the All-Star and All-Defensive teams. It’s not quite the same, but ESPN.com named him to its all-lefty team, along with Los Angeles Lakers forward Lamar Odom, Toronto center Chris Bosh and Milwaukee guards Michael Redd and Brandon Jennings. According to ESPN, 6.7 percent of the players in the NBA are left-handed.
  3. Being the only rookie on the Atlanta Hawks roster doesn't scare Jeff Teague. In fact, not a lot of things do — haunted houses are about the only thing he will admit to. Approaching the end of his first full month in the NBA, it's almost impossible to wipe the grin off the face of the 21-year-old, who was the 19th overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. His comfort level is showing with a 2.57:1 assists-to-turnover ratio that is fourth among NBA rookies, and an 8.5 assists per 48 minutes total that is tied for second among freshmen. The confidence in his ability to make the right decision has given the Hawks the confidence to fearlessly put the former Honorable Mention All-America from Wake Forest at the wheel to spell veteran point guard Mike Bibby. Teague sat down with Hawks.com and talked about a lot of things, including his biggest adjustment to the NBA, the hardest part of his first West Coast road trip, why he can relate to lady bugs and what college he does NOT want his brother, Marquis, a big time high school prospect, to attend. 1. How have your first couple of weeks as a pro been? JEFF TEAGUE: It's going fast. The games are coming up so fast compared to college but I'm having a lot of fun. The biggest adjustment is not really having days off. You have to be in the gym every single day. In college you had study hall, had tests and things like that. But now, the whole time you're just focusing on basketball and getting your rest. You know you have a great opponent almost every day. You have no days off in this league. Every game is important. 2. How was your first West Coast road trip? TEAGUE: It was fun, but the hardest part for me wasn't even the basketball. It was getting ready and packing everything. I over-packed, so I was carrying so much luggage. That was a big thing that I learned. You can't over-pack. I had a lot of bags with me but other than that, since we had the time change, we got a lot of rest. We got a couple of road wins. Hopefully we can have have a good stretch here at home. 3. As the team's only rookie, did you have to carry the bags or go through any other rookie initiation? TEAGUE: I had to load them up to the plane but I didn't have to carry a lot. I had enough of my luggage. On Halloween, going out [to Los Angeles], I had to dress up like a lady bug. Othello [Hunter] bought me a suit. That was it. 4. Were you star-struck at all playing against Kobe Bryant for the first time? TEAGUE: I wouldn't say star-struck but I was excited to play. Going to the Staples Center was really fun. I guess when you see the guys, warming up, you kind of look down a little bit but once you get onto the court everything goes to the side. 5. What are you learning from veterans like Mike Bibby and Joe Johnson? TEAGUE: The biggest thing I learned from them was shooting the ball. I was always going to the basket and making things so difficult going to the rim. They make the game so much easier because they can shoot. That's the biggest thing I've been working on with the guys. I'm learning every day. [Coach Woodson] is a good coach. He's really tough on rookies but it's going to be better for me in the long run. I'm trying to learn the system and hang in there every day. BONUS: Your dad played for Rick Pitino at Boston University. Is there any kind of Wake Forest-Louisville recruiting war going on between you and your dad over your brother, Marquis? TEAGUE: I didn't want him to go to Wake Forest. Oh, man, I didn't want him to go there (laughs). I was like 'Pick another school. Have your fun there.' I want him to have his own thing. I don't want him to have to follow in my footsteps or anything like that. I want him to have fun, go to a school that he really enjoys. Plus he doesn't want to go that far from home. My dad doesn't really talk too much about playing for B.U. He talks more about my brother now since he was recruited by Louisville. That's a matter between them. By Jon Cooper

  21. Trail Blazers-Hawks Preview The Atlanta Hawks have yet to be challenged at home, winning their first four games inside Philips Arena by an average of 17.5 points while cruising to an early lead in the Southeast Division. The Portland Trail Blazers, though, have been nearly as flawless on the road. The Trail Blazers haven't lost since they were beaten by Atlanta nearly two weeks ago, and they'll look to complete a perfect five-game road trip and win a seventh consecutive game overall Monday night while trying to deny the surging Hawks a fifth straight victory. Coach Nate McMillan wasn't pleased with Portland's ball rotation or defense in a 97-91 home loss to Atlanta (8-2) on Nov. 3, so he decided to stick free agent acquisition Andre Miller into the starting lineup three days later against San Antonio. Miller's numbers as a starter haven't been spectacular - 12.3 points, 4.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game - but his impact has been felt. The Blazers (8-3) have won their last six games by an average of 14.3 points, with the biggest improvement coming on the defensive end. Portland was giving up a respectable 93.2 points per game through its first five contests, but has cut that average to 82.0 points since Nov. 6, limiting opponents to 39.5 percent shooting. Charlotte shot 36.6 percent Saturday and Brandon Roy's 25 points paced Portland in an 80-74 win. The Blazers have won the first four games of their road trip by an average of 12.7 points. "We made plays," McMillan said. "We got stops when we needed to. We're scoring when we need to. We're finding ways to win." As the Blazers seek their first seven-game winning streak since a 13-game run from Dec. 3-28, 2007, though, they'll be without Travis Outlaw. Fourth on the team in scoring at 9.9 points per game, Outlaw suffered a stress fracture in his left foot Saturday and could be out six to eight weeks. Outlaw had 19 points off the bench in the loss to Atlanta, but he wasn't the most impressive reserve to see key minutes. Jamal Crawford had a game-high 27 points for the Hawks, and has averaged 17.7 points while shooting 47.6 percent - seven percent better than his career average. Crawford had 21 points Saturday and Joe Johnson scored a team-high 26 in a 121-98 win over New Orleans. "Honestly, now I'd rather come off the bench," said Crawford, who's averaged 20.7 points in his last three home games. "I like to see how the flow of the game is going." Crawford was the biggest offseason addition for Atlanta, which is in the league's top five in points per game (108.0) and field-goal percentage (48.6). The Hawks have won all four home games by double digits - including a 25-point rout of Denver - and have two of the league's most impressive road victories, at Portland and Boston. The last time Atlanta won its first five home games was in 1997-98, when it opened 7-0 en route to the franchise's last 50-win season. Along with the addition of Crawford, the biggest difference so far has been the Hawks' interior play. They lead the league with an average of 54.0 points in the paint - 20.5 more than 29th-place Portland. "They're growing up," coach Mike Woodson said of his team. "We have size this year. With Zaza (Pachulia) and Joe (Smith) coming off the bench, we have a lot of size. We're not scarce this year for big guys." Atlanta outscored Portland 50-34 in the paint earlier this month. http://www.sportingnews.com/nba/article/2009-11-15/trail-blazers-hawks-preview
