  1. I don't have a problem with the team not being willing to pay the luxury tax for the third best team in the division. that means you can't even get a top 4 seed. But to me this is why I was so shocked that the Hawks would give Joe 6 years and 124 million.
  2. The Hawks could spend around 3.5 million the first year for a player while not paying the luxury tax. (assuming that the Hawks go with the 13 man minimum roster size and fill the other 2 spots with minimum players) Put it this way for how far that money will go- that would have been enough for Johan Petro but not enough for Jordan Farmar.
  3. The Spurs should still have bird rights on Jefferson.
  4. They are going to give the money they got for the pick and give it to Joe Johnson. Realistically it woudl take a sweetheart deal for the hawks to spend the MLE because it would put them into the luxury tax. And I just can't see the ASG being willing to pay the luxury tax for the third best team in the division.
  5. Don't start up a ridiculous political argument on a basketball board.
  6. Lowry 6 million Foye 4 million Ridnour 4 million Bonner 4 million Z- minimum salary but not an option for the hawks at that price.
  7. Looks great on Andoid. I think notifications would annoy me but if you'd like me to test that out I can.
  8. if the Bulls thought that JJ at 4 years and 60 million was realistic then they shoudl be fired for incompetence.
  9. No... You cannot use a TPE to acquire a player that makes more than the TPE. It can only be used to acquire a player who makes 3.7 million dollars or less.
  10. MLE? If you guarantee him a minimum salary contract I'd think he would jump at it. And I think he would be a great fit- I'd love to see the hawks get a bigman who can stretch the floor. I was irritated when the Hawks didn't go after him last season.
  11. Acie is now an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team in the league that will take him. If he still sucks will you FINALLY admit that he was just a bad pick?
  12. He had the tools of a wasted first round pick. He should never have been a lottery pick. Whats a coach supposed to do when the GM drafts a terrible player? All they can do is not make the pick worse by wasting minutes on them. When Acie was here there was an open question of whether it was a bad pick or whether Acie was being misused. Then he left and the Warriors didn't even pick up his team option. Then he got discarded and DIdn't play for the bobcats. Then he went to the Bulls who have shown little interest in retaining him. If he had blossomed after playing for Woodson then hell yes you could blame him for Acie failing here. But since he has done nothing in 3 stops since leaving woodson at some point you just have to say that he was a dumb pick and give Credit to Woodson for recognizing it far sooner than people on this board did.
  13. Because you can only use the TPE to absorb a salary- you don't trade it. You can't absorb a 10.7 million dollar salary with a 3.7 Million dollar TPE. Thats just how the league set it up- trying to explain why would just be me trying to read their mind. They made TPE's useful in only certain situations. All you need to know is that you cannot use a TPE to acquire a player that makes more than the TPE.
  14. Thats just how it works. Trade exceptions aren't really traded- they are created when you take back less salary than they trade and later can be used to absorb salaries of other players. So if you have a big 14 million dollar TPE and use it to absorb a 3 million dollar player- you still would have 11 million dollars left over to absorb another player with it. The Hawks will have a 3.7 million dollar TPE after this- if they used it to absorb a 2 million dollar player then they would have 1.7 million left over to absorb another player. But remember that the TPE cannot be used to acquire a player that makes more than the value of the TPE. But this in effect means that low value TPE's don't have much use.
  15. Acie has been discarded by 2 hall of fame coaches and another team since leaving- how on earth is it Woodson's fault that BK drafted a crappy player? Its to woodson's credit that he didn't waste more minutes on Acie.
  16. Sothron- telling Joe "go find an offer" means "We aren't making an offer". Telling a RFA "go find an offer" means that you keep the player unless someone overpays.
  17. Smith and Childress were restricted free agents. So if they got an offer they liked the Hawks would have an option to match the deal. if Joe got an offer he liked he could have just accepted it and left even if the Hawks wanted to match it. There is a HUGE difference.
  18. The ASG are not going to pay the luxury tax for the third best team in the division. Its not Sund's fault that the Hawks hands are tied.
  19. In my opinion its misleading to say that the Hawks have 5.3 M before they exceed the cap because then it makes it makes people think the hawks could have matched a Childress contract starting at 5.2 million without paying the tax which isn't at all true. For people who get the nuaces of the tax then its fine but describing it your way is of course perfectly correct but I think will just give most people a misleading idea of the Hawks options. Another example would be to make this a 3 way trade with Sessions 3.9 million dollar salary coming to the Hawks and a TPE going to the Wolves. But that also would put the Hawks over the luxury tax to absorb his contract like that which complicates the trade a great deal.
  20. Lets say a quality center would cost at least 7 million a year starting out. This wouldn't get you a Brendan Haywood but may be able to get you a decling Shaq. That would mean that Joe would have given up 53 million dollars over the life of his contract to leave enough room for that quality center. I'll just say its a whole lot easier asking someone else to give up money. If he cared more about winning than he did about the extra guaranteed money then I think its pretty likely he would have just signed with another team.
  21. 13 is the minimum roster size. It just doesn't make any sense to put the 13th minimum salary on there because what people really care about is how much they could spend for that last player without exceeding the tax.
  22. By the numbers I have the Hawks are currently 3.5 below the Luxury Tax $16,324,500 Joe $11,700,000 Josh $10,080,000 Jamal $6,712,500 Marvin $5,564,767 Bibby $5,444,857 Horford $4,251,250 Zaza $2,500,000 Evans $1,476,840 Teague $1,042,320 Crawford $854,389 (minimum for 11th roster spot) $854,389 (minimum for 12th roster spot) --------------------- $66,805,812 Total The Luxury tax line is $70,307,000 So to sign the 13th member of the roster the Hawks could spend up to $3,501,188 without exceeding the luxury tax. I'm sure that my numbers aren't perfect but that gives you a pretty good idea where the Hawks sit. If the Hawks were going to have 14 players on the roster that would eat into the 3.5 million even further.
  23. AHF- the Hawks are currently about 3.5 million dollars below the tax and they consider themselves to be the third place team in the division. They aren't going to pay the luxury tax unless someone turns them into a contender or would dramatically increase attendance and Childress does neither. Saying that they will pay the tax is free.
  24. niremetal- what do you think should be changed about RFA? I think they get restricted free agency pretty much correct. The only change I'd make for the second rounders is that I think all qualifying offers should be guaranteed contracts. So that it actually costs you something to retain a player's rights- if you are going to retain a players rights you are basically offering them a roster spot no matter what.
  25. swanlee- the Hawks wouldn't have had any caproom since childress went overseas even if they had renounced the caphit to Childress. He went overseas because they were willing to pay him a lot more money than the hawks were. If the Hawks were willing to pay Childress as much as other teams they could have gotten a whole lot more in a S&T. Why should he have loyalty to a team that is trying to screw him and pay him far less than other people are willing to?
