4. To be honest , I feel the Hawks are getting a lot of love ... On a daily basis NBA.com has one or two positive Hawks articles ...tweets from Lang Whitaker and Sekou show Hawks love ...espn is getting on the act with Stein giving us number one on power ranking and a slew of videos and podcasts and tweets proclaiming us to be legit ...NBA TV with Ernie and Kenny even shaq are showing Hawks support ...furthermore since TNT and NBA studios are based in ATLANTA it seems there is some homerism brewing with "the Starters" and NBA TV crew. In fact I have not read or seen anything saying we are not real except one or two isolated low or no impact journalist ..who only come to attention because they are mentioned in this forum .. Either way it seems the mainstream media is starting to believe on the other hand the casual fan will take time
5. @GreyMule More importantly we are three up in the loss column!

10. NBA HANGTIME Blog : are the Bulls the team to beat in the east ? Steve Aschburner, NBA.com: This is the best Bulls team since Michael Jordan retired for the second time, as far as depth and potential, so there’s no reason – on paper – that it shouldn’t get to The Finals. Cleveland, more than its general meshing, has a problem in Anderson Varejao‘s injury that might not get fixed until the offseason. Toronto, in postseason savvy, is a step behind Washington. And the Wizards, for all the confidence they gained last spring, would have trouble defending against this more-potent Chicago lineup. Atlanta? I respect the Hawks, but one-trick ponies have trouble in seven-game series. So the biggest question for Chicago remains Derrick Rose‘s long-term health and availability. Which means the “who” who might stop the Bulls must be … uh, trainer Jeff Tanaka? (Just kidding, Jeff) Atlanta? I respect the Hawks, but one-trick ponies have trouble in seven-game series. What is our one trick ??...winning ..this guy makes no sense we are top 10 in offense and defense rating our only weakness is rebounding ..,but to call us one trick Is nonsense .
11. We apparently have the best record in the league vs top 12 teams at 6 -4 as per NBA.com/yahoo . All other contenders are below .500.
12. http://nyti.ms/1wvr7zm PRO BASKETBALL N.B.A. Game of the Week: Cavaliers at Hawks By JONAH BROMWICH DEC. 29, 2014 The Atlanta Hawks, who host the Cleveland Cavaliers at 7:30 Eastern on Tuesday (NBA TV), have won 15 of their last 17 games and have risen to second place in the Eastern Conference. While their schedule was fairly easy for the first six weeks, they recently took a brief trip to the middle of the country and were able to beat the Rockets and the Mavericks before returning home and stealing one away from the Clippers in the fourth quarter. Those are all good teams. Are the Hawks a good team, too? They have been a decent one since 2007-8 and have gone to the playoffs every year since. But within that span, they have yet to make it past the conference semifinals, and because of that, they have become a stable — and relatively dull — mediocrity, good for the East but never really standing out in the league as a whole. But Atlanta has seen a lot of turnover in the past few seasons, and just as with other newly successful teams in the N.B.A., it is possible to trace portions of their program back to the San Antonio Spurs. The Hawks’ general manager, Danny Ferry, and coach, Mike Budenholzer, are Spurs alumni, and the team’s newly exciting offense, much like most of the successful offenses in the N.B.A. this season, owes a lot to San Antonio. That means prioritizing the team over any one player, and the Hawks’ ball movement shows their believe in that philosophy. The team is tied for the league lead in assists per game, and because no one player dominates the ball, none of the Hawks’ scoring numbers leap out. The scoring is distributed: In their last five wins, they had five leading scorers. Some of the players contributing in Atlanta will be familiar to N.B.A. fans. The journeyman Kyle Korver has been with the Hawks for the past three seasons, and the longtime starters Jeff Teague and Al Horford continue to help out on both sides of the ball. Some newer names are also starting to pitch in, including DeMarre Carroll, who in his second season in Atlanta has put together some big games, including a career-high 25-pointer against the Clippers on Tuesday night. Carroll is unlikely to become a star, but he is a hard worker with a decent jump shot, and he gives Atlanta an extra boost of energy. Another promising player is the Hawks’ leading scorer off the bench, Dennis Schröder, a fleet 21-year-old whose jump shot has improved significantly since last season. Carroll and Schröder contributed to Atlanta’s 29-point domination of the Cleveland Cavaliers on Dec. 17, but neither was the Hawks’ high scorer. That honor went to Shelvin Mack, a third-string point guard who does not usually see the floor when the game is on the line. That’s the thing about these new-look Hawks, though: Any one player can put them over the top. Not that it is so difficult to score against the Cavs. They are one of the worst defensive teams in the league in terms of opponents’ field-goal percentage, and their defensive rating has suffered accordingly, as they allow about 105 points for every hundred possessions. We knew early in the season that the Cavaliers’ defense was going to need some work, but individual defensive performances are still a major issue in Cleveland, particularly with the loss of Anderson Varejao, who is out for the rest of the season with a torn Achilles’ tendon. Kevin Love, whatever his contributions may be on offense, is simply a sieve on the other end, so much so that Coach David Blatt benched him through the fourth quarter of Friday’s game against the Orlando Magic. According to an ESPN Stats & Info post on Twitter that received a lot of attention, the Magic shot 57 percent with Love in the game and only 35 percent with him on the bench. The Cavaliers may have a bad defense, but they are not a miserably bad team over all. They are simply less appealing than they were expected to be. Even when a team has just added LeBron James to its roster, there is no such thing as an instant contender. The Cavaliers are very much in the playoff mix in the East, and they have more than half a season left to work out their issues. With the dismantling of the conference’s two best teams from the last couple of seasons, the top seeds on the lesser coast are still up for grabs. It is not much of a stretch to say that both Atlanta and Cleveland are likely to be competing for top playoff slots come April. © 2014 The New York Times Company N.B.A. Game of the Week: Cavaliers at Hawks - NYTimes.com.pdf

Rebounding?!

We are 26 th in the league in rebounding . How good would our team be and how good would our defensive rating be if we could rebound the ball better. The clippers who are worse then us at rebounding killed us on the offensive glass . However it is hard to find a big man who can hit the outside shot on offensive and rebound the shit out of the ball on defensive ..,hmmm how about Payne ?
14. Horford's presence equals wins By Jeff Goodman ESPN Insider Al Horford has averaged 18.3 points over his past four games for the Hawks. For some reason, Al Horford just doesn't get the respect he deserves. His former teammate at Florida explains why succinctly. "Because he plays in Atlanta," Chicago Bulls star Joakim Noah told me earlier this season. People seem to forget that the Atlanta Hawks -- with a healthy Horford -- resided in third place in the Eastern Conference on Dec. 26, 2013, the day Big Al suffered a season-ending pectoral injury against the Cavaliers. Then it all fell apart. The Hawks were 16-13 with Horford, 24-31 without their unassuming big man. A year later, Atlanta is tied for second place in the Eastern Conference with a 19-7 record -- just one game behind Toronto in the loss column. And Horford is back to help lead the charge. "He's one of the elite, maybe the best, two-way big men in the league," one general manager said of Horford. "Without him, the Hawks are a fringe playoff team. With him, they can finish third in the league." "Shoot, they may even be able to win the East the way they are playing," added another GM. The Cleveland Cavaliers were the preseason Eastern Conference favorites after picking up LeBron James and Kevin Love to go along with Kyrie Irving. Noah's Bulls were a close second thanks to a healthy Derrick Rose and the addition of Pau Gasol and rookies Doug McDermott and Nikola Mirotic. The Hawks are in front of both. "We're a completely different team with him," admitted Hawks guard Shelvin Mack. Horford is a two-time All-Star in his prime at 28 years old. He was averaging 18.6 points and 8.4 rebounds at the time of his injury, and his numbers have dropped off a bit this season (14.2 PPG, 6.5 RPG) -- but his impact on this team goes well beyond numbers. "He's a diligent worker, sacrifices for others and is a terrific leader," Hawks second-year coach Mike Budenholzer said of Horford. "He's just so unselfish." He's also someone who has the reputation around the league -- and it began in his college days -- for rarely taking a possession off. Remember, this is a guy who was critical to two national title teams at Florida. He and Noah both sacrificed for the betterment of the team, and Horford took a backseat for much of his tenure. This is a guy who was fine with finishing fourth on the team in scoring during the team's 2006 run. "He's all about winning," said former Florida assistant Donnie Jones, now the head coach at UCF. "That's what makes him so special. He's rare these days." "His presence just gives everyone else confidence," added Mack. "He doesn't care about his own numbers. He just wants to win." If there's a star Hawk, it's Horford. The Hawks have some nice players, but you don't win without stars in the NBA, and Horford is the star of this team both on the court and off. Sure, Jeff Teague has made tremendous strides over the past couple of years and leads the team in scoring. The addition of Paul Millsap a year ago was huge. Kyle Korver is as effective a pure shooter as there is in the league, and guys like DeMarre Carroll and Mike Scott are both playing well again this season. And second-year man Dennis Schröder has upped his game. But the only way this team is going to remain near the top of the league is if Horford stays on the court. "When he's healthy, he's one of the top 25 players in this league," another high-ranking NBA executive said. "He plays both ends of the court, and that's what separates him from some of the other big men. Sure, Dwight Howard is better defensively -- but he can't really score. Kevin Love is a better offensive player, but he doesn't guard. Horford does it all." One NBA executive put the difference between Horford in or out of the lineup over an 82-game schedule at about 10 victories. Another said that figure might even be a bit conservative. That makes sense since last season the Hawks were three games over the .500 mark with him and seven games under without him. During one stretch from Feb. 4 to March 8, Atlanta dropped 14 of 15 games. This season, Horford's started all 27 games and look where they are now. "No one is scared of playing them without Horford," one NBA GM said. "They could be a lottery team without him. I know that Millsap put up better numbers last year, but Horford is the better player when he's 100 percent -- and it's not even close." Horford still is getting back to full strength. His minutes are just below 30 per contest, and he's not quite as aggressive on the offensive end. Remember, this is a team that was learning a year ago -- a new system under a new coach. "We were all thinking too much," he said. "This year we don't have to worry about that. We can just go out there and play." "Can they win the East?" asked one NBA executive. "Probably not, but they can be a factor in the league and get to the Eastern Conference semifinals. They have a nice young point guard, a shooter and one of the top front-line tandems in the league. But the key to their entire team is Horford." Anyone with Espn insider access please post No cooling off hot Atlanta Streaking Hawks legit contender for East title using depth and defense
15. Hollinger Power Ranking #2 Rating 106.758 CBS Sports Rank 2 The Hawks are as good on offense per possession (7th) as they are on defense per possession (No. 7), and are winning games they should and games vs. tough opponents (like Saturday's win vs. the Rockets). Maybe, just maybe, this is a Hawks team you can believe in. NBA .com Rank 4 Someone needs to figure out what the Hawks ate for Thanksgiving, because they've been a totally different (defensive) team since then. Their only loss came at the buzzer, and after wins against the Bulls, in Cleveland and in Houston, you can throw the weak-schedule thing out the window. Maybe Spurs fans can adopt Spurs East for a while. ESPN (Marc Stein) Rank Pending As of last Monday, Atlanta had played the NBA's weakest schedule. On this Monday, Atlanta is reveling in wins over Chicago (home), Cleveland (road) and Houston (road), generating more Spurs East talk than ever and making me look good (for a change) for picking Mike Bud as preseason COY. Oh by the way were ranked number 1 by Stein in 2009 but week 3 ...Yes this is the deepest in the season we have been ranked so high in well over 15 years! Sad but true. Go Hawks
16. Respect ! Monday we should be top 5 in the major power rankings! Is this the deepest in the season we have been ranked so high? I remember we were ranked one on ESPN a few years back but it was prolly in Novemeber.. espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/powerrankings
17. The Net Rtg of -7.9 is from Johns rookie season. This is not ideal but as you rightly said this years sample size is too small and last year he was injured. This is the best NBA data we have on him.
18. It seems Net rating for Jenkins is -15 this year and was -7.9 in 2012-2013, where Mack is -3.3 for this year and two years ago. That explains why mack gets PT and JJ doesn't. Same with Pero he is + 13 in Net Rtg this year while Muscala is -2.3. Moose this year has shown a PIE greater than 11, indicating he is better than the average NBA player, so he probably will see more PT soon.

Money Mike 2

I too have been wondering the lack of playing time for our young players, http://hawksquawk.net/community/topic/401400-put-shelvin-in-a-suit-please/?p=737000. I presumed it was Jenkins lack of D that was limiting his court time and it was puzzling that Antić, who seems to miss so many shots, is on the court so much. Thus I decided to do some research and see what the numbers were between head to head match ups. John Jenkins vs Shelvin Mack Since John was out with a bad back I decided to compare the 2012-2013 years for both players. Overall GP MIN OffRtg DefRtg NetRtg AST% AST/TO AST Ratio OREB% DREB% REB% TO Ratio eFG% TS% USG% PACE PIE John Jenkins 61 14.8 98.0 105.9 -7.9 10.5 1.40 13.3 2.1 9.6 5.8 9.5 53.6 57.6 18.3 95.22 9.2 Shelvin Mack 31 13.4 100.8 104.1 -3.3 26.5 2.00 28.9 0.8 9.6 5.4 14.5 53.2 53.7 18.9 94.04 8.1 John's Net Rtg is even worse this year -15.5, while Shelvin has remained stable at -3.3. Caveat: John's PIE is higher despite having a worse Net Rtg Muscala vs Antić 2013-2014 Overall GP MIN OffRtg DefRtg NetRtg AST% AST/TO AST Ratio OREB% DREB% REB% TO Ratio eFG% TS% USG% PACE PIE Mike Muscala 20 10.7 94.5 114.8 -20.3 5.8 0.58 7.1 8.9 20.6 14.4 12.2 42.5 48.0 19.2 98.04 6.5 Pero Antić 50 18.5 104.7 101.0 3.8 10.0 1.05 13.3 7.0 18.9 12.9 12.6 51.4 54.5 18.2 96.67 7.7 Muscala vs Antić 2014-2015 Overall GP MIN OffRtg DefRtg NetRtg AST% AST/TO AST Ratio OREB% DREB% REB% TO Ratio eFG% TS% USG% PACE PIE Mike Muscala 7 10.7 96.9 99.2 -2.4 6.4 0.60 8.1 16.4 10.4 13.4 13.4 57.4 59.9 19.6 97.31 11.0 Pero Antić 19 16.8 104.6 91.0 13.7 7.4 1.23 12.3 5.8 12.4 9.0 10.0 44.4 49.3 15.6 98.41 5.0 Lessons learned: 1) John despite being a better scorer gives up too much on D, negating any of his offensive benefit, while Shelvin seems to hold his own. 2) Pero is an advanced stat monster, showing a big positive Net Rtg. While Mike has improved his Net Rtg, he is almost 15 points worse then Pero. But givens Mike's PIE and the fact his Net Rtg is almost equal this year he probably will see more playing time this season.
20. It's hard to complain when you are winning like we have , however I will . I agree Jenkins , Payne, Muscula should be getting more playing time . I am not saying play them exclusively but they can eat into PT of Kent, Pero, Mack. It was good to see Muscula get PT and produce today. I don't know what JJ has done to be in CMB dog house . We could have used his shooting tonight.
