Let me start by saying I do value Capela and what he brings. He's a solid starting center and I wouldn't trade him just to trade him. I'd either want a solid pick for him, or use him as part of a package deal for a star (Beal and KAT come to mind as players potentially available).
I think Capela and Turner are in the same tier as players, but I also think Turner is a better fit. We basically trade Capela's rebounding for Turner's shot. Having that shot would really unlock Collin's game IMO, and Turner can still protect the rim on the other side. I don't think we can afford to lose Collins for nothing, but he's also going to be expensive. To make him worth his contract I think we have to put him in the best position to succeed.
I also think Turner and Okongwu could play alongside each other some, whereas Okongwu and Capela definitely cannot. Question is, how do we turn Capela into Turner without giving up too many more assets?
Here's a thought:
CHA gets Capela, Hawks 2022 pick (if necessary).
IND gets #11
ATL gets Turner
Nice and simple. Does a deal like this meaningfully improve our team's chances in the postseason? (Obviously, I believe the answer is yes!)

I don't post much anymore since I moved to Texas and have been working pretty insane hours, but...
This season has been magical man. I've been a fan since 2003 when I was 10 (!). I remember when I became a hardcore fan; there was this end of year video where Nique and Bob were running down the roster and Nique called Joe "the Allstar" and Marvin Williams "the future" (lol), and for some reason my 10 year old brain thought I want to see that future. What a ride since then.
Josh Smith broke me as a fan. That is all.
That 60 win year felt special, my senior year of college, an Al Horford game winner against the Wizards when we were at the beach and all my classmates watched me lose my mind. Course, we lost that ECF pretty embarrassingly. Ever since then, I've been a homer, but I've been a cautious one.
I was cautiously optimistic about Trae but wanted Luka. The early returns were troubling, but when I went to that double OT game against the Bulls Trae's rookie year, I felt for the first time in my Hawks fandom "Holy shit. We have a superstar." It's been frustrating at times since then, but this season has been the start of something special.
Trae punched New York in the mouth; shooshing the crowd, pointing to the scoreboard, taking that bump from Noel like a boss, bowing to the NY crowd.
Then the whole team took it to the Sixers: Trae's first half game 1. When we were down 18 in game 4, I thought, for a second, we had come to the end of the road. But this team is made of something different. We came back from down 18, and then came back from TWENTY SIX. And we won the series.
We clowned the Bucks in game 1 with backboard oops and shimmies. We got smacked pretty bad game 2, but looked good in game 3 until ... Trae went down.
That right there might've been the biggest "ATL Sports Fan" moment for me (not a huge football fan). I thought, "welp, it was fun while it lasted, but I guess it just ain't meant to be for the Hawks."
I will never doubt this team again. I hope Giannis gets healthy, cuz I'm not sure it really matters. We're built different. Class and attitude. Swagger and poise. Belief and execution. This team makes my cynical heart "believe." I thought I was too old for that shit, but this team's got me in the feels. Best Hawks team in my life time and it's just the beginning!
We're strapping in for a hell of a ride, folks.

I'm really liking Solomon Hill. Smart guy. Him and Rondo proving me wrong (did not like either signing)

There are precious few players in this entire league, in fact, in the history of this league, who have Trae's potential at his age...let alone just the players on this roster. Before you can talk about a dynasty, you need another dominant, not POTENTIALLY dominant, player....and that's just the foundation.
But having a player like Trae is a huge. Most fans won't understand what he is until we're actually dominating teams. Hell, most people don't realize his shooting and scoring ability rivals one of the most prolific scorers in this league in Steph Curry, but he's already a MUCH better point guard. He's rare and he's why I partially agree with you.
We're going to need to secure an equally dominant compliment to him before we can start talking about contending, let alone a dynasty, and the jury's out on the rest of the team. I like our team, though I think our ceiling is a playoff seed (5-8) right now. Talk to me again in a couple of months and we'll revisit.
Agreed, we need one more guy to truly get there, whether it's Cam, a trade or a free agent is yet to be determined. Trae is that dude though. I have complete faith in him

Haven't read the whole thread, but I thought the ball movement and defensive scheme looked solid despite all the new pieces, so hats off to Pierce. There were communication/chemistry issues but it LOOKED like a real NBA team

I like Capela, but he's only a solid player. He may be a top 3-5 C on the East, but that says more about the rest of the East (and the C position in general) than anything about Capela

Feel like people are going overboard with the Harden hate here. His teams have won a ton of games without him having a true second star. He is a superstar.
I agree he probably isn’t the right fit for our team but you do a deal if the price is right and he wants to be here. I suspect he doesn’t want to be here but let’s not pretend like he is Zach Lavine or Andrew Wiggins or something.
Always the voice of reason. I have no love for Harden or his game but I wouldn't rule it out completely. Still a weird fit between him and Trae, and we'd be scrambling into championship mode. It would be tough to make it worth it but the upside is high (maybe even championship high)

Because of our depth ? Or because of just how damn well these players fit together and each others style of play?
im actually with you. The more I look at the east the more rondos interview started to make sense to me. I think this team could possibly be a top east team based on how the offseason went for us vs what other east teams lost.
I think we're a top 4 East team talent wise, just gotta figure out chemistry/fit and stay healthy

I expect us to make the playoffs and be competitive once there. This is going to be a COVID season and we have a lot of moving pieces.
However, we have as much talent as any if the top teams, so even if it takes a while to figure things out we better be a tough out in the playoffs. Use that as a stepping stone for next year where expectations are even higher.
Also, if a star becomes available hop all over it.

Yall forgot how good the Big Ticket could shoot. Giannis is not KG. He's closer to Karl Malone.

It's the defense that gives me the KG(01) comparison. Giannis can be your best player due to his defense, but he needs a Paul Pierce to hit shots

Giannis is closer to KG than LeBron

I agree that it's a little premature, but talent wise... I think we're pretty close. If Cam, Collins or Trae take a(nother) leap, we've got the talent (if Trae takes another leap, lawd!).
5 minutes ago, NekiEcko said:Actually we might have to think bigger with this, like somebody was saying that we might have a package to go after a superstar if they desired a trade. The sky is the limit right now
Agreed, we got some depth and pieces now. If somebody becomes available we should be all over it.

$13-$15 given what happened to the cap this year is about right. If it was a normal year $18 mil would be about right.
He's a 3rd option player. He isn't Superman or Batman...but he's not Alfred or the Wonder Twins either.
We are gonna be nasty offensively. Hopefully McMillan can get us to D up like he did with the Pacers, and Pierce can take us back to the offensive system of his first year with better talent. Could make for a helluva combo. How good are we now? Top 8? Top 6? Top 4?!!

Don't think it's crazy to say we landed 2 of the top 5 or so FAs. Big time offseason

The fit/ego stuff needs to be figured out, but Gallo is worth this contract in a vacuum and he raises our talent level a lot. He was one of the 5 or so best FAs on the market.

After getting Gallo, I wouldn't hate chasing after Van Vleet. He's younger and is a fit.

It's weird. I like him value wise, though he's a little redundant with Capela. Potentially a better fit with Collins long term though
Edit: would've probably picked Hayes or Avdija though

A bust? After one year? Lets see where he is after year three. Of course, even if he is putting up numbers it will be readily dismissed as "empty calories." Tough crowd around here.
Never liked him, on record I think. No role in the nba

If Hawks had drafted RJ somehow I suspect their opinion of him would be slightly different.
RJ is one of those dudes that was a bust the moment he was talked about as a top 10 prospect. No shot, no athleticism, mediocre handle. Ain't his fault, unreasonable expectations, weird scouting. He'd be better as a 4 probably tbh, next to Robinson.

Dunno if it's been mentioned yet, but I like that kid Tre Mann out of Florida. Think he'd be a solid backup guard for Trae, and could maybe play alongside him as well.
