beav
Told ya that Rasheed is likely to go this offseason! Would you listen? Huh? Huh? Jason Quick rates the Blazers May 9, 2003 Related content: » If character matters... JASON QUICK'S RATING SYSTEM 1. Bad apple. Has to go. 2. Issues. Should go. 3. Question mark. Keep, but with risks. 4. Doesn't shake the boat. Keep and deal with small issues. 5. Squeaky clean. Keep and build around. RASHEED WALLACE Character rate: 1. Pluses: Incredible talent who has made strides in reducing his technicals (from 27 to 11 last season). Minuses: His attitude, which includes a nonexistent offseason work ethic, an indifference to losing and a refusal to speak with the media, sets a poor example for younger teammates. His volatile temperament on the court makes him unpredictable, and his unwillingness to accept a leadership role that comes with being the team's highest paid player has become a burden. Also was charged with marijuana possession this season. Contract status: Entering final year of his contract, which will pay him $17 million. Tradability: His talent alone makes him attractive. At least three teammates said they would identify Wallace as one of the team's problems in their exit interviews this summer, providing greater motive for the team to shop him. BONZI WELLS Character rate: 1. Pluses: Budding talent who has the tools to become a star. Minuses: Severe attitude problem. Last year alone, he was suspended for spitting on one opponent, fighting with another, and was kicked out of a practice and suspended after cussing out coach Maurice Cheeks. Suffers from a bad case of pouting and is foul-mouthed to officials. Contract status: Set to make $22.7 million during the next three years, with the team holding an option for a fourth season. Tradability: Should be high, considering his enormous potential. Some wonder what kind of player he could be without Wallace's influence, which could add to his attraction. RUBEN PATTERSON Character rate: 2. Pluses: Great "effort" player who has no problem accepting role off the bench. Minuses: Has past anger-management issues, which include breaking a man's jaw for scratching his car, forcing his nanny to perform a sex act on him and being arrested on accusations of domestic assault on his wife this season. Contract status: Set to earn $24.5 million during the next four seasons. Tradability: High. Teams would love his energy and defense, and his contract is digestible. DAMON STOUDAMIRE Character rate: 3. Pluses: Professional attitude, strong leadership qualities. Minuses: Two marijuana incidents in the past two years are a blemish on an otherwise spotless character. Contract status: Set to earn $24.875 million during the next two seasons. Tradability: High. Had been considered difficult to trade because of his large salary, but with one less year and an outstanding postseason, Stoudamire's stock has increased. Indiana coach Isiah Thomas, who drafted Stoudamire when he was in the Toronto front office, is close to Stoudamire and desperately wants an experienced point guard for the Pacers. DALE DAVIS Character rate: 4. Pluses: Great person, strong work ethic, big in community service. Minuses: Has missed practices, once flying to Las Vegas to protest playing only five minutes in a nationally televised game. Contract status: Two years for $19.1 million. Tradability: Moderate. His salary might scare off teams who are reluctant to pay big bucks for a player who averages 7.4 points and 7.2 rebounds. DEREK ANDERSON Character rate: 5. Pluses: Model citizen, wants to become team's leader, exciting player. Minuses: Injury prone. Contract status: Four years, $35.072 million. Tradability: Low. The model for what the Blazers should be looking for: good player, better person. ZACH RANDOLPH Character rate: 3. Pluses: Rising superstar with incredible offensive skills. Tremendous upside. Minuses: Sucker-punched teammate Ruben Patterson this season. In high school was a three-time convicted criminal for charges of shoplifting, battery and two counts of receiving stolen property (guns). Contract status: Two years, $2.977 million, with team option for third year. Tradability: Low. Although he has a troubled past, Randolph has stayed clean as a Blazer, except for punching Patterson. He is too good to let go. JEFF MCINNIS Character rate: 2. Pluses: Eventually came to accept his role as the No. 3 point guard. Minuses: Can pout about playing time but not to the point of distraction. Can be critical of teammates during a game. Contract status: Two years, $6.9 million. Tradability: High. Doesn't seem to fit in with the Blazers, and his contract is manageable. ARVYDAS SABONIS Character rate: 5. Pluses: Great talent, great size. Minuses: Can play limited minutes because of age and former injuries. Early retirement is always a possibility. Contract status: Two years, $14 million. Tradability: None. Sabonis has said he will only play for Portland. SCOTTIE PIPPEN Character rate: 5. Pluses: Team's biggest leader, great role model for younger players, can still produce. Minuses: Age (37) makes his health a question. Temper is easily triggered. Contract status: Free agent. Tradability: Low. Coach Maurice Cheeks desperately wants team to re-sign Pippen. ANTONIO DANIELS Character rate: 5. Pluses: Great character, good defense. Minuses: Expresses frustration about lack of playing time. Contract status: Free agent. Tradability: Daniels wants to return to Portland, saying the team needs stable players like himself, but he also wants to be on a team where he can play, which is still a question mark with the Blazers. QYNTEL WOODS Character rate: 3. Pluses: Has shown potential of being a productive player. Minuses: Cited on marijuana possession charges this season after stopped for speeding. Contract status: Three years, $3.975 million, with team option for fourth year. Tradability: Low. Team doesn't want to give up on him yet. RUBEN BOUMTJE BOUMTJE Character rate: 5. Pluses: Hard worker, great defense. Minuses: Little to no offensive skills. Contract status: One year, $638,679. Tradability: High. Could be a thrown-in to a trade.
