Caray, a 1957 Webster Groves High grad whose given name is Harry Caray Jr., was hired to do the radio play-by-play for the NBA's Hawks in 1968 -- their final season in St. Louis.

He remained with the team's radio crew when the Hawks moved to Atlanta, and that turned out to be his big break. A few years later Atlanta was at the forefront of the birth and emergence of national cable TV superstations.

Ted Turner's WTBS soon began beaming its pictures_including Braves and Hawks games_across the country.

And Turner hired Caray, his crony, to do Hawks telecasts in 1972 and put him on the Braves telecast team four years later.

SHOOTING-GUARD SEARCH:

Other free-agent shooting guards being considered by the Nuggets include Stephen Jackson, Steve Smith, Jon Barry and Dion Glover. Glover's agent believes his client would be an ideal fit.

"The Nuggets are a team that Dion is definitely interested in," said Brian [censored]. "They're definitely high on his list."

[censored] mailed to NBA teams a 20-page statistical comparison between Glover and 16 other shooting guards and small forwards, with Glover being ranked favorably when statistics are projected over 48 minutes. No All-Stars were included as Glover, who averaged 9.7 points in 24.9 minutes for Atlanta, was compared to players such as Jackson, Corey Maggette, Ron Mercer, James Posey and Wesley Person.

"A lot of teams were surprised to see how well he turned out," [censored] said.

ETC.:

After canceling an Atlanta visit, Jackson met with Hawks general manager Billy Knight in Las Vegas.

Top Remaining Free Agents (8-7-03).

Jason Terry • Status: Restricted Free Agent

Jason Terry tops our list despite his being a restricted free agent, meaning the Hawks, Terry's team since being drafted in 1999, have the right to match any offer another team may make. Even with the sale of the Hawks still up in the air, it appears the Hawks may match any offer for Terry.

Terry should be a hot commodity in the free agent market, considering his numbers are comparable to Gilbert Arenas' numbers. The reason he's still out there? He's a hybrid point-shooting guard, one of many in the league. Most teams want either one or the other.
