And 1:

So much for that new start. Shareef Abdur-Rahim was paroled from the Vancouver/Memphis Grizzlies only to have the Atlanta Hawks break down around him after two seasons, all the way to where they could be the worst team in 2003-04. It would take a major drop -- Atlanta won just 35 games, 18 more than the Cleveland Cavaliers and Denver Nuggets -- but the Hawks don't have a coach, are in an ownership change that has put major business on hold, and have eight healthy players plus the rights to restricted free agent Jason Terry. Two of those eight are rookies.

They could sign or trade for a 2004-05 stopgap and play an intriguing 2005 free-agent market that includes Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Ray Allen, and Antoine Walker.

One of the real attractions to Chris Ford in returning to the NBA as an assistant coach, aside from being on the same bench with Allen Iverson, Glenn Robinson , and Derrick Coleman, will be qualifying for a full coach's pension. Although Ford has 16 years credited as a coach (head and assistant), he didn't make enough money in his first two years in Boston to qualify. But with his stipend this year from the 76ers, Ford will be eligible for a full pension at the age of 62.

By the way, Ford said he was consulted about Robinson before the Sixers pulled the trigger on last month's four-team megatrade that brought the Big Dog to Philly. Ford, who coached Robinson in Milwaukee for two years, said he gave his imprimatur to the deal. ''Glenn is coachable,'' he said. ''And he can get you 20 on any given night. How many guys in the NBA can do that these days?''

Terrell Brandon: No, not Brandon the player. It's his $11 million salary that salary-cap conscious executives drooled over. Those dollars will come off the books in February, two years after Brandon last played in a game. That's why the Atlanta Hawks took on the salary from the Timberwolves, knowing they will be flush and emerge as a player in next summer's free agent market.

As for Brandon? He's as good as retired. His knees are toast after two surgeries. But hey, he will pocket more than $30 million for playing in 32 games in the past three seasons.
