Trade exceptions can be valuable tools in future deals. A team can acquire one by trading a non-cash asset (such as a second-round draft choice) to a team with cap room and receiving an exception in return.

For example, the Mavs could trade Utah native Shawn Bradley (and his $4.5 million contract for 2003-04) to the Jazz, a team with substantial cap space, for a conditional second-round pick. The Mavericks would receive a $4.5 million exception, which they could use anytime within a year to trade for a player making that amount or less.

The Mavs used a trade exception from a previous deal to acquire Tim Hardaway from Miami two years ago.

Adding a trade exception would streamline a team that underwent a major face-lift last week. It would also give the Mavs flexibility for the future.

Utah, Atlanta and Denver are teams with cap space that might be willing to take on contracts. According to league sources, a number of over-the-cap teams are looking to move players for trade exceptions.

Nelson said the Mavs, with the notable additions of Antawn Jamison, Danny Fortson, Travis Best and Jiri Welsch last week, are satisfied with the roster's makeup. But he isn't dismissing the possibility of further moves.

Atlanta Hawks legend Dominique Wilkins stopped by Imagine It! The Children's Museum of Atlanta on Sunday, August 18 to read a few stories and sign autographs for 100-plus children in attendance (and their parents). Wilkins' appearance was part of the museum's annual event program and fundraiser, "Making A Case For Reading." The initiative emphasizes literacy for people of all ages and tries to raise funds for Imagine It! CMA's educational curriculum. Find out more about the museum at www.imagineit-cma.org.

The event was held in conjunction with the Hawks Read to Achieve program presented by Philips Electronics, Sprite and T-Mobile.

THE DAILY (8-26-03).

Atlanta - One might think Jason Terry doesn't have a lot of fans back in Tucson at the University of Arizona. After all, he admitted taking money from an agent during his senior year that cost the school $45K and cost them a forfeit of a 1999 postseason game. One might think that, but it wouldn't be true.

Jason Terry

UA Guard, 1995-99

"I loved every minute of this experience. It was cool because you didn't get to play with some of these guys. It was fun getting to play with some of the older guys who were here before me."

"They've got me for life. I am a Wildcat for life. Tucson will always be my first home."

"I was definitely gunning for some big plays out there. It was for bragging rights. I had to play my game with Gilbert (Arenas) out there."
