Peachtree Hoops: Pape Sy Finally Makes His NBA Debut In Pacers Loss

Michael Cunningham reported before the game that there was a good chance that Pape Sy would be making his debut over the weekend.

haven’t practiced much since Sy rejoined the team from Utah but Drew said he made a point of getting him a lot of reps and Sy picked up things well . "I am curious to see how he does in a game-type environment."

Sy played three minutes going 0-1 from the field while coming up with one steal. A nice strip of Danny Granger. The point is no necessarily what Sy can give the Hawks this season, it is whether or not he can give them anything in future seasons going further. With Jordan Crawford traded, Sy is now the last man standing from Atlanta's 2010 draft. 

Sy went several months in the NBA D-League with the Utah Flash. Sy appeared in 23 games where he started 11 for the Flash. He finished with averages of 8.0 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. Sy played some point guard with the Flash, particularly when regular point guard Kevin Krueger was injured, but seemed to settle in more off the ball. In his D-League stint he hit 42% of his shots and a knack for getting to the free throw line where he converted 74% of his attempts. 

At six-foot-seven, Sy possesses the length and quickness to translate into an adequate defender with some added strength. Whether or not that translates at the Nba level remains to be seen. As has been pointed out by others, at 23 years of age he is a little old for a project. 

Sy capped off a journey that saw him pay for his own trip from Europe to attend a Hawks workout that ultimately ended with him making his debut in the NBA. After that workout, Atlanta saw enough in him to draft him with a second round pick. Sy played two games with the Hawks Summer League team while suffering an Achilles injury. He then came to training camp and developed a mysterious back injury that helped to delay his NBA D-League stint. Finally once healthy he joined the Flash before being recalled 23 games into his assignment. 

Its a rather wonderful story. Lets just see what kind of if any impact it has long term on the Hawks.
