Well, one thing is obvious. A lot of people definitely think that Atlanta will go for Josh Smith with the 6th pick. Out of 12 mock drafts, 8 have the Hawks selecting Josh Smith at the 6th pick. Two have them selecting Devin Harris, and two have them selecting Andris Biedrins.

The 17th pick is more all over the board. Jameer Nelson is the most projected player at that pick, being projected three times. The only other player projected to Atlanta multiple times with this pick is Sebastian Telfair.

Only five mocks projected the second round picks. Of those projections, Kevin Martin and Marcelo Huertas were projected the most.

I feel the most intriguing draft is nbadraft.net's. They have the Hawks taking Josh and JR Smith in the first round. Very little immediate impact, but tremendous potential for down the road, IMO. In the second round, they have the Hawks taking another somewhat local talent in Kevin Martin, a 6'7" shooting guard that averaged 25 ppg at Western Carolina. They also have them taking 6'5" point guard Roko-Leni Ukic from Split, Croatia. Again, these are two players that may not be ready to make an impact, but they are high on potential and can run the floor very well. The last pick is Chris Duhon, who would get a lot of playing time as a second round pick, IMO. He would be a solid back up that could serve as the glue for the second unit.

This post is for those who have question JR Smith ability. Many critics said that he only looked good at the all star games and that he wasn't on anybody radar. That is false. He has been one of the top players in his class since his junior year. UVA have been recruiting him since his Soph year for both football and basketball. Yes, he has a lot of weaknesses because he is not fundamentally sound. He only started to play basketball exclusively in his senior season. Once he gets good coaching to go with his off the charts athleticism, WATCH OUT.

It will be interesting to see what direction Billy Knight takes. He could go with the high school talent, looking at a 4 year time span for everything to come to frutition. Or, he could go with a college talent, looking to close that rebuilding gap a bit. It all depends on how secure he feels he is in this job, and even then, he may still go with potential over proven ability simply because the team needs to find a star to build around.

Many use the Bulls as an example of why a team shouldn't take two high school players. Well, for one, no one knew that Eddy Curry would be so lazy. Secondly, Tyson Chandler has been hurt by injuries more than anything.

If the Hawks go the HS route, a combo of Josh Smith at 6 and JR Smith/LaMarcus Aldrige at 17 would be great. I prefer JR Smith though. Hopefully if we get the Smiths, we go after Stromile Swift for the 4 spot. This would upgrade the atleticism of the team big time.

I am tire of the Hawks being mediocre. To use a baseball analogy, we need to swing hard. Either hit it big or strike out. That is why I prefer Josh Smith at 6. He has a chance to be a big time player. At 17, we could pick up a college player like a Luke Jackson/Kirk Synder/Kris Humphries.
