  1. I posted this last week. The Hawks website does not say he has signed. They just refer to a published article. Strange that they post on the Hawks official website a reference to a published report. Don't they even know whether it's true or not? They quote an AJC article stating that he "agreed to terms" with the Hawks. Just like he "agreed to terms" with Golden State? How is he officially signed?

  3. If he's so great, why has he never played more than 24 minutes a game during a season? By the way, congratulations, you got your wish. No Childress. Now if we can overpay smoob your life will be complete.
  4. So, we shouldn't overpay Childress, but it's fine to overpay Smith?
  5. Quote: I don't think there are any Smoove haters here. However if the choice is giving him a huge deal that hamstrings the team for years, letting him walk and receiving nothing in return. or getting the most we can get out of him in a sign and trade I think if you are a Hawks fan the 3rd option has to be considered. Exactly. Good post TMAC13.
  6. The Maravich trade to New Orleans. We got crappy players back but the draft picks were supposed to be the reasoning. We were going to draft David Thompson and Marvin Webster, and both signed with the ABA.
  7. Wow, to me that's a toss up between Weiss and Kruger. I guess I'd have to say Weiss though.
  8. Quote: Quote: Quote: This post is a perfect example of someone who is not a long term Hawks fan and has zero understanding of all facets of the NBA game (fan interest, momentum, defense etc.) I saw my first Hawks game when they were still in Alexander Memorial Coliseum, around 1969 or 1970. Does that qualify me as a long term fan? The whole salary cap crap we have today is because teams followed your logic and decided to overpay people. Hence the Hawks wasted good money on Jon Koncak. Maybe Smith at some point will be worth $11 million a year, but as for right now I'd say about $8.5 million ought to cover it. He is maddeningly inconsistent. He had two great playoff games, 3 mediocre games (being generous) and two outright stinkers. Yet everyone wants to give him a max contract or near max contract. I don't see it. You say he's only 22. You say he's freakishly athletic. Some say moreso than a young Dominique Wilkins. Maybe so, but by the time he had three years in the league, Nique had developed a consistent outside shot. He was Mr. Clutch. He won games despite having less talented teammates. Clutch would not be a word anyone would use to describe Josh Smith. The statements about his athleticism are true, but I am reluctant to mortgage our future on Mr. inconsistent just because some other team wants to overpay him. I care about winning, not watching dunk contests. Blocked shots are great, and enjoy watching them, but blocks alone aren't good defense. He has a career shooting percentage of less than 45%. If he learned to play within his limitations, maybe he would be worth $11 million a year, but there are no guarantees and he has given no indications that he ever will learn to play within his limitations. I suspect we'll match, but it just sets the table to overpay more and more mediocre players. But what do I know? I'm not a real Hawks fan by your definition. Are you crazy..People like you are never satisfied. You sound like you work for the Falcons organization. Because things like this are exactly why they suck to this day. Smith is not the player we need to get rid of, because he is actually helping this team. Now Marvin is who we should deal away. You were satisfied with last year? Low expectations, huh? Wanting to win causes organizations to suck? Huh...who knew? I'm afraid I can't follow your Falcons analogy, either. I assume somehow you are comparing Smith to Vick? As for me, I wanted to keep Vick and dump Mora. However, that's all moot since Mike's in prison. By the way, could you explain how valuing wins over showmanship causes teams to suck? I certainly never said to get rid of Smith in order to retain Marvin. I am not opposed to keeping Smith, we just don't need to tie up our salary cap by OVERPAYING him. I am certainly opposed to overpaying Marvin when his time comes. If we can trade him and get better, by all means, let's do it.
  9. Quote: You are if....you want to keep Josh Smith at any price. You are not if...you think he is not worth it. If you fall in the latter camp you have not been a fan this last decade, have no understanding of the enthusiasm and interest this guy brings to the average Atlanta sports fan and you have the basketball iq of...well.......a rock. Marvin is a bust. He has no heart. Horford is a different player. Smith brings people to the stands, gets people excited and with some continued offensive work will be a perennial allstar in this league. I don't go to the game to see a dunk contest. I go to see wins. I suspect I am not alone in that thinking. Winning brings the enthusiasm, not Josh Smith alone.

  11. Quote: Billips is overpaid and getting close to the downside of his career. And Bibby isn't?
  12. Quote: Quote: It doesn't matter if he wants 11 million +, he's a restricted free agent and there's no way that any of the teams with money is going to offer that much to him. He's not worth it anyways; he's one of those players where if he's the second best guy on your team you really like your chances, but will never make it as a head-honcho type guy (examples: Tony Parker, Rashard Lewis, Pau Gasol). I got this off of the fannation.com website. What do you guys think about this comment that was posted. Seems like a pretty fair assessment to me.
  13. Quote: Quote: The debate will rage on during that time about whether or not Smith is “worth” the money that will be tossed around. I think that’s a useless debate. You are worth whatever someone is willing to pay for your services. In the NBA, like every other endeavor, the market decides what you’re worth. Somebody pm this quote directly to Hotlanta. He needs to read that and marinate on it for a while. Yeah, the Hawks are living proof of that with Jon Koncak.
  14. I think if you notice "the fine print" that the $9.7 million is before interest and taxes. No telling how much interest they paid.
  15. Yeah, so are buttons that actually work.
  16. As there seem to be questions regarding the profitability of the team, I thought you all might find this article interesting. If someone has already posted this, please accept my apology. This article gives team financial profiles. Our revenue is well below many of the other teams. Forbes NBA financial info
  17. Are you referring to the offense of Woodson staying or the so-called offense that the team employs?
  18. Hmmm, 12 pts in 30 mpg. Last time I looked, 1 pt per every 2.5 minutes wasn't too bad. Here's a list of players with similar minutes and point production (I quit looking after a while because your comment really doesn't merit as much research as I already put into it, but...) Hinrich Gooden Ilgauskas Delonte West Tinsley Mobley Odom R. Davis Haslem J. Nelson Diaw M. Webster Salmons Pretty decent company if you ask me. How many of those players get 75% of their points from the field in the first 10 seconds of the shot clock? I thought we wanted a running team. This doesn't sound like a negative to me. At least he's not standing there pounding the ball running down the shot clock like Lue and JJ. http://www.82games.com/0708/07ATL8A.HTM I'd say probably none. What would Childress be scoring without his cherry picking? If he actually made a legit effort on the defensive glass instead of leaking out he certainly wouldn't be averaging double figures. Uh, in case you don't remember, Nique was more of an offensive rebounder than a defensive rebounder. Last time I checked, two points was two points. How many of those guys have the worst +/- on their teams? You sound like Walter with your stats. When the stats don't favor your little pet theory, you then discount them and ridicule those who quote them. click Guys like Hinrich and Big Z bring something to the game other than 12 ppg and they play at an important position. Childress does neither. Opinions vary. All Childress does is score 12 ppg. he doesn't bring anything else to the table but scoring and he isn't very good at that. He can't score outside 5 feet and that is a pretty severe limitation for a wing player. He doesn't play defense. He doesn't create for himself or others. All your post referred to was 12 ppg in 30 mpg. That's what I responded to. Learn how to read what you write. Mobley, Davis, Webster and Salmons are legit 3 pt threats and can spread the floor to help other players. They make it easier for other players to score. Childress doesn't. Childress has a career 3 pt % of 34.8%. It's stupid to say he has no range outside of five feet. True he doesn't chunk 'em up there with no conscience like Smiff, but that doesn't mean he has no range.

  20. I noticed a couple of weeks back during the all-star break, they had links to the NBDL all-star game as well. I am not really a big follower of the NBDL, but I noticed this guy that averaged 20+ ppg and 11+ rpg, named Elton Brown. Does anyone know if he has ever played in the big league? He's 6'9" 250 lbs. It seems to me he couldn't hurt and we still have a couple of roster spots open.
  21. I hope what Gearon said, Gearon means, but with the salary dump on the Hockey side with Hossa, you do have to wonder.
  22. He shoots the three at least as well and as consistently (well he doesn't chunk us anywhere near as many of those bricks) as your boy Jsmith. He certainly blocks a good number of shots and gets a lot of offensive rebounds and dunks for somone who plays like he's 5'8". Fact of the matter is, he is probably our best finisher. It's obvious you don't like Childress, but if you're going to hate on him, at least try to give some forethought about what you're saying before you post.
  23. Quote: In my opinion he will finish out the season no matter what. If he was not fired over the last 3 years they are not going to fire him now. Just my guess. If he is fired we would just be stuck with an assistant for the rest of the year and I don't see that solving any problems. The ASG is too cheap to hire someone mid season any way.........I don't ever remember a team hiring anything more then an interm in the middle of the season. You're probably right, but let's say they did fire him. They could then take a cue from the Thrashers. Make Billy Knight have to coach the talent he assembled. He should have no room to complain. It couldn't be any worse than Woody (could it?)
  24. Thats a great anology! In the NBA you only need to master one skill and be above average in every other aspect. If Solomon Jones can become a shot blocking specialist he will play in the NBA a long time. Solomon Jones>Esteban Batista Kind of like Manute Bol, huh?
  25. Quote: Quote: Esteban 2006-07 14.8 rebounds/40 minutes S.Jones 2006-07 8.2 rebounds/40 minutes Esteban was obviously the more productive rebounder based on the minutes he was given. (Note that both had basically identical seasons in terms of overall statistical productivity with EB's PER: 12.5 to SJ's PER: 12.3. Still wondering why Lo got any minutes.). Dude, Solomon Jones was a rookie!!! Batista was a 2nd year player with extensive international basketball experience. Lord have mercy Batista is terrible and will never play significant minutes in the NBA!! Solo on the other have will be a very serviceable back up center/power forward If you look at career stats, Batista has played fewer minutes than Solomon, but has outrebounded him by a significant margin. The argument that Jones was a rookie is not too convincing, as both of them were effectively rookies. Batista's first preseason game as a rookie, he scored 15 points in 17 minutes, including 11-11 from the FT line. I know, I know "it's only preseason," but had he been given decent minutes by Woodson, I believe he would have been a much better scorer, in addition to being a far better rebounder. I certainly have not been impressed with Jones. He blocks shots and that's it.
