Guest
It was my opinion when they trade happend and it's still my opinion.Gary is better than Brian, but Gary is not better than Brian and Perez. It has nothing to do with Gary postseason.but this deal costed them a young pitcher that had they kept it would soften the blow of getting rid of both Greg and Tommy. IF they didn't do this deal I'd suggest allowing both Maddux and Glavine to walk away.... Kevin Millwood Damien Moss Odialas Perez Jason Marquis I believe Jason will raise his game to a new level very soon. Now how do we fix the Braves? 1)Waive bye bye to Vinny 2)Move Chipper Jones back were he belongs I think playing OF effects his game. 3)I think the Braves have to get rid of both Maddux and Glavine. While that seems like a dumb thing to do the Braves have guys like Albie Lopez/Vinny still under contract. With the decline in attendance I believe the Braves can't just resign the guys until there arms fall off. It's time for the Braves to move in a different light and start thinking about the future. The Braves are not allowed to free spend anymore so now John has to really manage the team. Andruw Jones really isn't moveable...Furcal is a keeper.I think the Braves need a guy in the second hole with some speed and a guy that looks to just get hits and isn't passed his prime. The guy that Braves need to go after is none other than....JIM THOME!!!!NOT!!!!Brian Giles. While I like Thome he is just a swing for the fences type of guy.The Braves need a HITTER in the form of a Brian Giles or Larry Walker. The question is....what would it take to get Brian Giles to Atlanta?
Gray Mule
Add John Smoltz to your starting four. He is already under contract and a known competetor and former starter who can do it again. With Galvine & Maddux gone, there would still be five quality starters on the staff. And, don't forger the new guy that came up from 3A where he was 12-4 {I think} as a starter there. They have a couple of young guys that can play 2nd. and 3rd. and can hit. Larry Jones needs to stay in left. He does less damage there on defense. A catcher who can hit. As much as I like Lopez, he can't or won't lay off the low, outside pitch that he can't reach. Keep the # 2 catcher. He is a very good #2. We had a 1st baseman who hit around .300, a second baseman hitting around .300, both of whom played decent defense, but they didn't get to play much in the playoffs. Was this our manager or the former Hawks manager? They both believe in using veterans. Where was the hook for Glavine when it was apparent that he was off? Not once, but twice! Too many players trying to hit the ball out of the park instead of hitting the gap and having to run. No line drives, just swing for the fence and miss. Bitter pill to swallow. Admin chillzatl Posted October 12, 2002 Admin Report Share Posted October 12, 2002 The guy never produced here and seriously looked like he didn't have what it took. To say that he could/would have done what he did in L.A this year, if he had stayed is silly. The kid obviously had issues with the pressure of filling the spots behind maddux, glavin and millwood. I'd put money down that if he had stayed here, he wouldn't have had near the season he did. I agree wiht moving chipper back to 3rd. His defense wasn't that bad and his offense is the best in baseball at 3rd. Vinny Castilla had NO CHANCE of matching what chipper coiuld do there. They have to resign at least one of the "big two". To let them both go would be stupid. There is NOBODY out there that we can sign that will give us what they could give us. I say resign both if we can. THose guys will continue to pitch at this level for another 3-4 years, easily. If you put Maddux and/or Glavin in Arizona or another high offense team, they would easily net 22+ wins. No way you let both those guys walk. I say do what it takes to keep both of them. I don't think they'll demand as much as some people do. There's also no need to move Andruw Jones. While his average isn't as good as it should be. You aren't going to find very many players in baseball who bat .250 and still give you near 40 homers, 100rbi's and the defense that he brings. His average doesn't show it but he really improved this year with his walks and fewer strikeouts. I think TP will get andruw where he needs to be. He did it twice this year But Andruw just couldn't maintain it. It's going to be interesting to see what they do though.
Guest
Theyt might get you reg season wins but with both Greg/Tom the team is still gunna be stuck where it has been.First round exit. They are good pitchers but the team needs a shakeup.Maybe keep one but let the other guy go.I know it must be hard due to the type of guys Tom and Greg are....Shakeup is in order and I'd probably keep Greg over Tom. I wouldn't move Andruw cause sure enough as you trade him somebody gets a hold of him and gets him to hit they other way more and bam he's a top 10 player in the league. The Braves gave up on Perez too early like they have lots of guys including vets like Fred McGriff. Isn't Paul Byrd a pretty good pitcher now also?
