Friend: Rose ready to confess, apologize for bets

New York -- After years of denials, Pete Rose reportedly is prepared to admit he bet on baseball. That's according to Newsday, which says the information comes from a friend of Rose who wants to remain anonymous.

The New York newspaper also says that Rose would be willingto apologize for the denials and serve a probationary period.

Baseball's all-time hits leader is trying to get reinstated to the game and become eligible for the Hall of Fame.

Rose has been in negotiations with commissioner Bud Selig to get back into baseball's good graces. Selig is requiring an admission from Rose that he bet on baseball, an apology and for Rose to serve a probation.

Selig would not comment to Newsday on the status of his negotiation with Rose's attorneys.

Rose agreed to a permanent ban from baseball in 1989 after an investigation into his gambling.
