Breaking down free agency (6-30-03).

Point guards:

"5. Jason Terry. The Hawks could try to keep Terry, but they still do not have an owner. So, Terry will peddle his wares, but can he get much more than the mid-level exception, which will bump up to near $5 million if the cap increases back to $42 million? The Jazz might look at him as a fallback option, but his tweener status -- a shooting guard in a point guard's body -- will have teams cautious."

Small fowards:

"9. Dion Glover. Glover has never quite lived up to his potential, which he shows in flashes. The Hawks, one would presume, will be looking to cut payroll, which means Glover probably won't get an offer from them (though Atlanta can match other offers)."

"* Terry is a good fallback position for the Jazz, who were burned by his speed and shooting this past season. Arenas' point-guard predecessor at Arizona is considered a little more polished than Arenas, but he is a career 43-percent shooter.

Whether Atlanta will allow him to leave is unknown, but the Hawks, frustrated at spending $55 million for a team that never approached playoff contention, are believed to be interested in dumping salary and starting over."

"While Banks' move to Beantown is being hailed widely, there's some divergent opinion on whether or not the Atlanta Hawks helped themselves by picking Boris Diaw-Riffiod of France and 6-5 shooting guard Travis Hansen of BYU.

John Denton of Florida Today liked it. "This could be the finest draft the Hawks have had in years," he wrote. "With 6-foot-9 Boris Diaw-Riffiod, the Hawks can afford to play Jason Terry at shooting guard. Travis Hansen is a sleeper from the second round who could be solid."

But those responding to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Internet vent did not.

"Congratulations to the Hawks on another terrific accomplishment. They have now officially dethroned the Cincinnati Bengals as the worst draft-day franchise in major professional sports," wrote one reader.

"Everyone involved in the basketball operations of the Hawks has been stealing their paychecks for years," and "

Typical Hawks draft. A relatively unknown Frenchman and a no-name guy from BYU? This will sure pack 'em in Philips Arena," wrote two others."

Atlanta = 7+

"The Hawks bagged one of the more versatile players in the draft pool at No. 21 (Boris Diaw). He'll be a solid backup at each of the three perimeter positions. But does he ever evolve into a starter at any of them?

They also got one of the more spectacular athletes (Travis Hansen) in the draft in the second round. He could not only make the roster but play a lot as a rookie, especially if his ball-handling skills improve."
