Inside Dish: Hawks shed no tears over Robinson's departure (7-27-03).

http://www.sportingnews.com/voices/sean_de...y/20030727.html

Don't expect Hawks PG Jason Terry, a restricted free agent, to shed tears over the departure of SF Glenn Robinson to Philadelphia in last week's monster, four-team trade. Robinson's domination of the ball was an issue for Terry last year, and the two never meshed on the floor or got along off it.

The same can be said for shot-blocking C Theo Ratliff, who had to work overtime to erase Robinson's defensive lapses. The Hawks were one of the league's most disappointing teams, and team insiders point to Robinson as one of the main reasons.

The acquisition of injured PG Terrell Brandon, whose salary will come off the books once he retires, probably this summer, also is good news for the Hawks because it means the team will get below the luxury-tax threshold and be able to make a sizable offer to keep Terry, who wants to stay in Atlanta. …

An inside look at a four-team NBA trade (7-27-03).

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Hawks weren't the only team that wanted Terrell Brandon's contract. It really was a "hot commodity," as Hawks interim general manager Billy Knight said. They were just the only team that had what it took -- namely 20-point scorer Glenn Robinson -- to get a deal done.

Indiana, Portland and Miami were all seeking the cap relief Brandon's $11.1 million contract would provide. The Pacers were one of two teams -- Portland was the other -- that reportedly held up the blockbuster, four-team trade Wednesday in a last-ditch effort to get it. Indiana's plan was to use the available cap space to re-sign center Brad Miller. And, according to the Star-Tribune in Minneapolis, they reportedly had talks about a deal with Minnesota, but the Pacers were unwilling to trade Al Harrington or Ron Artest.

That left Timberwolves vice president Kevin McHale to find another taker. The Wolves did not want Robinson, but when 76ers president Billy King said he did, that meant the New York Knicks could get their wish -- Keith Van Horn -- and the Wolves could get desired swingman Latrell Sprewell.

After Pacers CEO Donnie Walsh lost out to his protege Knight, who was vice president of basketball operations in Indiana three years ago, he was forced to settle on a three-team trade that landed Scot Pollard and sent Miller to Sacramento.

"Everyone looks at it and says it's such an ideal situation and such a good deal," Knight said after he moved the Hawks out of luxury tax territory and about $2.42 million under the salary cap. "But it's a sad situation for Terrell. The greater preponderance of players would rather be playing than not playing. As an athlete, I have empathy for him. It's a difficult situation."

Brandon missed all of last season and likely will retire soon. Since he hasn't played since February 2002, his salary will be off the cap next February. This recently happened with the New York Knicks, who didn't have to pay a tax on Luc Longley's $6.9 million this season because he suffered a career-ending injury in March 2001.

Making this deal hurts in a purely basketball sense, because the Hawks didn't get a comparable player for Robinson. But this could be a financial windfall for the Hawks.

Depending on how much money the Hawks spend to sign Jason Terry and other free agents, they will be eligible to receive money for staying under the luxury tax threshold.

Live from the Chateau, Tim Brando takes sports radio across the country (7-27-03).

But Hampton was right as Brando was destined for TV. ESPN, the Atlanta Hawks and Atlanta Braves came calling with Brando ultimately becoming a fixture for CBS Sports. He is currently the studio host for CBS' college football Saturdays.

You can't believe every thing these writers say, this guy from the sporting news stated Terry didn't get along with Robinson off the court. That is a lie Terry and Robinson were friends and even wrote a rap song together. It was nice to hear Abdur Rahim have such nice comments about JT. Stating he doesn't know why he hasn't been offered the big money like Arenas and Miller.Reef states "I would take JT anyday."
