Isiah Thomas will probably get hired too. Maybe by the Atlanta Hawks. But only if the sale of the Hawks team occurs quickly. Or else he might be a mid-season replacement of Terry Stotts.

It was that kind of summer in South Florida. The Heat originally showed interest in Minnesota's Terrell Brandon, coveting Brandon's contract that would come off the books with his projected retirement because of a knee injury, in a trade that could have delivered Eddie Jones to the Twin Cities. Except that would have helped Miami clear cap space to challenge for Kevin Garnett when he becomes a free agent next offseason, so the Timberwolves, using salary strategy beyond the value of the players involved, instead shipped Brandon to the harmless Atlanta Hawks.

NEW FACES:

Check the coaching roster in the Central Division lately?

Only Chicago's Bill Cartwright and Atlanta's Terry Stotts, will coach their same teams.

And Stotts could be out of a job if the Hawks' ownership situation resolves itself soon, though it's unlikely soon-to-be owner David McDavid would make a coaching change this close to training camp.

Manning said part of the fervor, though, has been caused by the lack of other major professional sports teams in New Orleans from 1979 -- when the NBA's Jazz left -- until the Hornets arrived last year.

"I watched the Saints and the Falcons when both were having a tough time winning," he said. "In Atlanta, the fans just quit going to Falcons games. They went to Braves and Hawks games instead. In New Orleans, there was nothing else."

The King and A.I.

Glenn "Big Dog" Robinson will wear a Philadelphia 76ers uniform next season and no one is happier about that than guard Allen Iverson, who in recent seasons has bemoaned the fact that he didn't have another high scorer playing alongside him. Iverson lauded general manager Billy King for landing Robinson from Atlanta in a four-team deal that also included New York and Minnesota.

"Billy King did his job this summer," said Iverson at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico. " . . . I haven't been this happy heading into a season in a long, long time."

The Amico Report (9-5-03).

THE GREATEST EVER:

Without any real news to report, I give you my list of each franchise's greatest player of all time (with others considered in parentheses):

Atlanta: Bob Pettit (Lou Hudson, Dominique Wilkins)

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Atlanta also hits the West Coast early, with a five-game swing in the second week. The Hawks are at Golden State Nov. 5, followed by games in Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles (Clippers), and Phoenix, respectively. If they can survive that, they could be better than a lot of people are predicting.
