Moderators AHF Posted July 12, 2005 Moderators Report Share Posted July 12, 2005 I never understood the reports of interest by the Hawks in Ilgauskus until Z resigned with Cleveland before Cleveland could offer other FAs that money. I now think the Hawks probably feigned interest in him to force Cleveland to burn that cap room and remove them as a competitor for the young centers in the league. The Hawks are building around players aged 19 - 22. Why would they be interested in a 30 year old center with a history of foot problems for high $$? However, there is no downside to pretending to have interest in him during the period in which teams cannot sign players to contracts to try to get Cleveland to protect its investment in Z. On the other hand, I do think the interest in Ray Allen was legit.
Lascar78
That could be the case, or it could have been Chad Ford making things up

I love the fact that Ford reported that the Hawks haven't been pursuing the young centers and BK said yesterday that the Hawks have been in touch with Dalembert, Chandler and Curry on a daily basis since FA opened. jezmund
Oh without a doubt, if BK actually did contact Big Z it was just to get Cleveland moving on it.
Gray Mule
Especially, if that player can play the position that you are looking to fill. Just because you smile at a pretty girl and speak nicely to her doesn't necessarily mean that you're ready to grab her up and head for the wedding chapel. But, if her boy friend is nearby, he may get the message, "I'd better do something. I could loose my beloved." Now, on the other hand, if he walks away and leaves her all alone, with no way home from the party, he is asking for trouble. You just might step in and win the heart of the fair maiden. Same thing applies to all the free agents out there. The other teams know the Hawks have openings on their roster and have the money to pay hansomely. We smile and speak to the free agent. His team, in this instance, Cleveland, knows that the Hawks are on the prowl. They want and need a center. What to do? Claim what is theirs and that's that. Simple. They get to keep their player and the Hawks move on, ready to smile and talk to the next prospect.

Being linked to a team everybody thinks is desperate to spend money, doesn't hurt your client's value. trs
