Loved the article. I really enjoyed the analysis around the reasons for overlooking him at the NBA draft combine. In fact I seem to enjoy more stat driven articles written by fans more than anything from the major media outlets (aside from a couple articles from our boy Zach Lowe down at Grantland).

Hell no, second round picks are our bread and butter.

Havent heard much about this lately... Ok im about to go into conspiracy theory mode... Stephen A. like many of the "major" talking heads really irk me. When criticism comes from a great who has played the game and actually accomplished something (Ex: Magic Johnson), I respect their opinion way more, because they have done it, they have gone through being an athlete and can see things media personalities don't see. Stephen A. knows he's a character. I don't even remember him breaking down NBA footage in his life, but then again Im sure thats a product of sports media in general dumbing it down for everyone. I remember being a freshman in HS, struggling to watch the Hawks on PAX TV. It was the hardest channel to get any reception, had to adjust my antenna like a thousand times. We have come a long way since PAX TV.

Interesting video by Forbes on the shopping of the Nets. What I found most interesting was how Balmer didn't even look at the financials of the Clippers before he bought them (what a baller). I hope the potential sale of the Nets at the same time doesn't stymie our chances of getting a decent ownership especially with Brooklyn being a prime market. Ferry and Bud have truly outdone themselves with the success of the team. I would go as far as to say if teams in smaller markets want to build a team without having a superstar they sure as hell are going to take particular note of how this team was built. To me there are two brands of basketball being played right now: 1. Me Ball 2. Team Ball The former is way more marketable and profitable and I think that is why you saw this shift in the way consumers were attracted to the NBA for a majority of Stern's tenure. There was a rush to 1.) Aquire/draft superstar(s) who monopolizes a majority of the teams stats 2.) Build around with players that complement him. In my opinion 90% of the league thinks this way. If you think about it what is the primary purpose of the All Star Game: to showcase the individual stars, further promoting the individual rather than the team. I think the latter is something real special: Basketball based on the fundamentals. For many that played basketball when they were younger probably enjoy watching the Hawks today because they frankly do not care who is scoring as long as the team wins, something I personally was taught growing up playing ball. This type of ball play is really played in Europe but in the NBA highlighted first by the 2003 Spurs (feat our very own Danny Ferry) and continued by the 2004 Pistons to an extent. I truly think that if the Hawks make it deep into the playoffs that we could start a potential shift in the way organizations approach team building. Can you imagine an NBA where the group is more important than the individual? What are your thoughts? GO HAWKS!

Long time lurker here. I don’t post much on here but I figure I break the ice and start a discussion for the first time. I have long wondered about a our GM’s ability to get the most assets from a deal. Similar to many people here, after the recent trade I was a bit irked by how little Ferry was able to get in return for Lou and Bebe. I look at a GM like Hinkie who owned 20% of the second round picks this year by flipping scrubs like Evan Turner and Lavoy Allen and wonder how we aren't able to get maximum value. On top of that her was able to swipe Saric while netting a second AND a future first for letting the Magic move up 2 spots for Payton! Other GM’s like Morey and Ainge are seemingly also able to attain maximum value in trades. Meanwhile in Atlanta, we can’t get anything for Josh Smith, can’t seem to trade Teague ever for anything good and had to add a first round sweetener for the Raptors to take a reasonable player and contract in Lou. Even in the Joe Johnson deal we weren’t able to get Marshon Brooks and had to settle for swiping firsts (which by the way hope works out for us next year). Now before you say “why is this dude crying over a couple second round picks ?” Can you imagine what Ferry and Bud could have done with the second rounders the 76ers had? We could probably build a whole overseas farm system with those picks haha. In actuality its not just about the second rounders but our inability as a whole to get better deals. I don’t want to come off as too negative here because I’m very optimistic about the hawks in general and love what Ferry is doing. All I’m saying is it would be nice to see him get more valuable assets in his trades. For once, I want to see the Hawks get the longer end of the stick in a trade, especially for a team that repeatedly gets touted as being the most "flexible" during every Free Agency period. What are your thoughts? What do you think is dictating our inability to get better deals? Is Ferry just not a great negotiator?
