Having a big expiring contract can be useful in trades for other players that have big contracts (think Kwame for Gasol). It's harder to make trades with lots of small expiring contracts because you have to have roster spots available for the new players. That's why the Kings had to waive two players to do the trade with us. Small contracts give you better flexibility though so you can deal them or keep them to free cap space for yourself. The reason expiring contracts are "worth" anything is because it means the team that lets the contract expire will open up a lot of cap space.
