THE DAILY (8-21-03).

Atlanta - This past season with the Hawks, Darvin Ham regressed even though he appeared in a career-high 75 contests. He averaged 2.4 points on 44.7 percent shooting with 2.0 rebounds in 12.3 minutes per game. He suffered a five minute drop in playing time with his move to Atlanta. In reality, all bringing Ham to Atlanta accomplished was throwing another stumbling block into his career.

Leading a hot travel trend (8-21-03).

To promote his business, Smith has developed partnerships with teams like the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Orlando Magic, in which Sports Travel and Tours puts together road trips for the teams' fan clubs. All the promotional work for the trips is done by the two clubs, which receive a royalty payment - about 10 percent - from the fees the company charges for the trips.

"That way we can send a bunch of Diamondback fans up to San Francisco to watch the Diamondbacks play the Giants, or fans of the Magic can get on a bus to see them play in Atlanta against the Hawks," says Smith. "It's a win-win situation for us, for the fans, and for the clubs."

2. Shareef Abdur-Rahim , 6-9, 230, forward, Atlanta Hawks: Here's another guy who puts together good numbers and has been promoted by the NBA marketing machine. But his teams always get caught up in whining instead of winning.

Crowd lines up for tickets to see basketball phenom (8-20-03).

http://cgi.citizen-times.com/cgi-bin/story/sports/40423

Rollins was just one of about three dozen or so basketball fans who were waiting at the Civic Center box office Wednesday morning when tickets to the Cleveland Cavaliers- Atlanta Hawks NBA preseason game went on sale to the general public.

The small but steady crowd that stopped by the box office the first two hours was no indication of how hot the tickets were.

Boosted by Internet and call-in purchases, a little more than 300 tickets went in the first 30 minutes. After two hours, a reported 600 tickets were sold. When the box office closed at 4 p.m., only 1,600 tickets remained with online purchasing expected to continue throughout the night.

At least one could make that assumption based on the fact that we apparently made him an offer. Actually, it is likely that we offered Gill a deal at the vet mimimum because the league picks up all but about $650,000 of that but still, it makes you wonder. If they can make offers to Gill, why can't they make offers to JT, DG or DJ?

I think Hawks simply made an offer to keep their name

in circulation.

"If no one else wants this player, we'll take him for the

league minimum."

They probably didn't really expect to get him at this price.

But, on the other hand, you never know.

Hawks has an opening. If the player says, "O.K., I'll

take your offer." we fill a spot. If not, we loose nothing.
