Gray Mule
Salary cap? Luxury Cap ?? Minimum payroll N.B.A. will allow any team to have ?? Minimum you can pay a player in the N.B.A. ??? All this gets confusing, doesn't it. It does to me. Now, my real question is this: We hear talk of all these teams that are paying all these players these huge salaries The great teams of the west who are so superior to the east teams. There seems to be an idea, which is apparently valid, that the weakest teams from the west could contend for the championship of the east. Yet, as we examine the Atlanta Hawks, who are expected to be somewhere between poor and very, very poor. We don't even have 12 players under contract. We have 8 able bodied players with J.T. set to become #9. That leaves 3 open slots. These 9 players are going to take up all the salary that we are allowed before we hit the dreaded Luxury Tax?? If we can't win with the players we have and have spent all our money, then it becomes a hopeless case. If we can't possibly win with these players and we are at the cap, then we obviously are grossly overpaying a lot of players. That is what they are being paid for. To play and win ball games. If they can't do that, then we are in a hopeless hole. How do all the teams in the western conference get all the good players, coaches and everything else? How do these teams in the west manage to pay all these great players who make so much money and win so many games and run all over the eastern teams when all teams, both east and west are in the same league and play and pay under the same rules ?? Who are the Hawks overpaying? Apparently, every player on the roster. Years ago {I've been around a long time} before the league changed so many things in baseball, a player went to the owner, requesting a substantial raise, as he had a very good season. The owner said, "I know you had a great year. The team finished in last place. We could have finished in last place without you. Raise denied." Any one have any ideas why all this is the way it is??? Gray Mule
Thanks. Complicated? Yeah, I see that it is. How do you get out of a bind once you commit yourself to all these mega-buck contracts that everyone seems to get? Apparently, the easiest way is to trade one of the players with the big salary for two or three players with smaller salaries. You could trade a player with a $6 million contract for two players with a combined $6 or three with a combined $6 million. But, if you already have a full roster, what can you do? Still, the question remains. How do all the west coast team get to be so much better than all the east coast teams? What can the eastern division do about it?? Blunt91
You have also got to remember graymule that good teams don't have to overpay players because players want to go to a team that can contend for a championship like Karl Malone going to the Lakers for dirt cheap money. A classic example would be Danny Manning as a FA back in 94 turning down the Hawks offer of 7years and around 55million to play for the Suns who only offered him a 1year contract around 2 or 3million.He wanted a ring but he didn't get it.
