TERRY SPEAKS

Restricted free agent Jason Terry spoke recently with the Atlanta Journal Constitutions’ Tim Tucker about his free agent situation and his pending offer sheet from the Utah Jazz in a Q & A Tucker asked “Do you hope the Hawks match, or not?” "I'm pretty sure I can make either situation work. But I'm ready to move on with my career and get in a structured situation like Utah, where the coaching staff and ownership are stable. It's definitely time to move on." “You previously had been outspoken about wanting to stay with the Hawks. What changed?” "If I had to pinpoint one thing, the instability of ownership. I was excited about being part of a winning team with the Hawks. The city of Atlanta deserves that. But after talking with them a total of three times all summer, it became clear that the present ownership was really looking to try to save money rather than win. I was pretty much leaning toward [signing Utah's offer by Thursday morning], but it still wasn't solid in my mind. I talked to my wife, looked at my two kids, and they were ready [to move]." “Is it going to be an antsy wait, the 15-day period?” "It's definitely on the Hawks; you never know what they'll do. At this point, I'm just relieved, man, to sign an offer with training camp two weeks away. I'm blessed." Incoming owner David McDavid, who still awaits final closure on his purchase of the Hawks, commented briefly about the Terry situation saying "I need to not have any comment on that, other than to say we really want him in Atlanta and just would have to look at how it affects the entire overall situation." The holdup in the sale appears to be in AOL Time Warner’s need to shift collateral before they can sell the team. AOL financed the Phillips Arena using the Hawks franchise as collateral, meaning before they can sell the team, they must replace that value with some other asset, and refinance the deal. McDavid continues to say the deal could close any day.

Back to Houston

The Bucks, Portland, San Antonio and Atlanta were teams that showed an interest in Milwaukee native Mike Wilks before he signed with Houston, according to his agent Bill Neff.
