The home team trailed by as many as 17 in the fourth quarter.

The Atlanta Hawks pulled off an impressive comeback win against the Detroit Pistons Wednesday evening, winning by a score of 123-115. The Hawks trailed for much of the game, and by as much as 17 in the fourth quarter, but were able to rally late and get the win in overtime.

The Hawks were more than a little short-handed in this one, playing without De’Andre Hunter and Cam Reddish. Danilo Gallinari, Bodgan Bogdanovic and Kris Dunn also remain out.

John Collins came out firing for Atlanta, scoring 12 points on 6-for-9 from the floor in the first quarter.

The Pistons led 31-29 heading into the second quarter, with Clint Capela also providing a big presence inside.

Atlanta however struggled mightily in the second period, getting out scored 21-16 in the quarter, trailing 52-45 at the break. A late 10-0 run by the Pistons left them ahead at the break.

Trae Young was again cold from the field, going 2-for-11 from the floor. He also shot 1-for-5 from the free throw line in the first half.

Capela was the brightest spot for Atlanta in the first two quarters, securing another double-double well before the break. He had 14 points and 15 rebounds at half.

Jerami Grant led the way for Detroit, scoring 15 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists in the opening half of play.

Detroit came out of the locker room on an 11-4 run, giving them a 14-point lead early in the third quarter.

Young finally came to life in the third, scoring 21 points in the quarter and bringing the Hawks back to within three late in the period.

However, the Pistons would immediately go on a 11-0 run to get the score back to 92-78 heading into the fourth.

The Hawks were unable to mount much of a rally early in the fourth, as they trailed 99-87 with 5:26 to play. Atlanta kept battling, however, as a three from Kevin Huerter made it a ten-point game with 4:12 remaining.

Young hit a layup to cut it to 101-94 in favor of Detroit with 3:14 to play, then another to make it a five-point game at the 2:33 mark in the fourth, putting him over 30 points for the contest.

Capela went to the free-throw line with 1:40 to play and the Hawks trailing 103-98, but was only able to make one and cut the deficit to four.

After a stop, Collins got fouled heading to the rim on a lob from Young and had a chance to make it a one-possession game with 1:15 to play. He would make both, making it a two-point game.

Blake Griffin hit a wild up-and-under layup, however, on the next Detroit possessions, making it a five-point game with about a minute remaining. After a few empty trips from the Pistons, the Hawks again trailed by just two with 33.8 to play.

Young found Capela slashing to the basket for a dunk to tie the game at 106 with 5.4 remaining.

Collins blocked Grant on his way to the rim to send the game to overtime on Detroit’s would-be game-winning possession.

After a pair of 5-0 runs by each side, the teams were left tied at 111-111 with 2:12 to play in overtime.

Huerter found Capela for an and-one layup with 1:27 to go, giving the Hawks a 116-113 lead with 1:27 to go. Young hit a three to put the Hawks up six with a minute to go, effectively sealing the comeback win.

Young led the way with 38 (32 in the second half + OT) and 10 assists, while Capela had 27 points, 26 rebounds (12 offensive) and five blocks. Collins notched a double-double as well, scoring 31 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Huerter added 17 points, five rebounds and four assists.

Grant finished with 32 points in the loss for Detroit, with Griffin adding 17 points.

Atlanta will now travel to Minnesota to play the Timberwolves for the second time this week on Friday evening.
