The Hawks and the Nets met in a matchup of 6-7 teams ahead of Thanksgiving. Atlanta was trying to break a three-game losing streak, but they had to contend with a feisty Brooklyn squad in an Eastern Conference battle.

The Hawks picked up there they left off last night on both ends. Trae Young was involved early and often in a hot start for the Hawks offense, like on this long triple.

Still, Atlanta was unable to pick up stops and Brooklyn took a 20-15 lead within five minutes of game time. After a timeout, Bogdan Bogdanovic helped the Hawks regain the lead.

Atlanta found their way late in the first quarter with a 13-0 run to take a 36-25 lead behind hot shooting from deep. Later, Bogdan Bogdanovic used defense to create offense for Trae Young here.

Young finished the quarter with 19 points behind 6-for-7 (83%) shooting from three as Atlanta led 45-33. The Hawks continued their hot streak into the second quarter, keeping the Nets at arm’s length by continually pushing the pace and finding openings.

Jalen Johnson continued to do Jalen Johnson things on defense.

The Hawks maintained a multiple-possession lead the entire second quarter, and they finished the first half on a high note with some easy buckets in transition. Atlanta took a 77-67 edge into the locker room at the midway point.

Trae Young had 19 points and six assists at the break. As a team, the Hawks logged a 140 offensive rating in the first 24 minutes.

The Hawks again ran into trouble holding onto the lead early in the second half, as the Nets carved the lead down to virtually nothing within the first six minutes of play. A 5-for-18 start from the field offensively didn’t help causes either, and so the Hawks were left to pick up the pieces after yet another blown 15-plus-point lead.

From there, it was a back-and-forth affair until the end of the third quarter. The Hawks managed to end the period on a 6-0 run and secure a 100-95 lead, but Brooklyn won the quarter in a vacuum 28-23.

In the final quarter, the Hawks still couldn’t regain the offensive firepower they had in the first half. The contest remained close, but De’Andre Hunter did his part to keep the Hawks in front with some timely finishes around the rim.

The Brooklyn Nets did not go away, however, try as the Hawks did to put them away. Mikal Bridges, in particular, found a bucket whenever the Nets needed one down the stretch.

After Bridges and Dejounte Murray traded midrange buckets late in the fourth quarter, the Hawks forced a miss and had a chance to extend a one-point lead. However, a series of Trae Young shots and offensive rebounds all went begging and Brooklyn took control of possession with 11.5 seconds left down a single point.

Bridges was able to drive and get a shot up that was well-defended, but the miss was collected and put back by Nic Claxton. On the following possession, Trae Young drew a foul but split the pair of free throws to tie the game at 131-131. A Bridges fadeaway from a sideline inbounds play did not ring true, and so, to extra time the game headed.

In overtime, the Hawks jumped out to a five-point lead, but then a 6-0 answer from Brooklyn made things dicey once again. Trae Young and Mikal Bridges largely traded points until a Bridges fallaway two gave Brooklyn a 143-142 lead with 26.3 seconds to play. Young countered that with an elbow jumper for a 144-143 edge.

Possibly the biggest play of the night followed on the other end, with Okongwu ranging over on a Bridges drive to reject him.

Young hit three of four subsequent free throws to give the Hawks a 147-145 lead with a pair of Bridges free throws sandwiched in between. A last second shot from Lonnie Walker IV was late and the Hawks escaped with a 147-145 win to reach 7-7 on the season.

Trae Young finished with 43 points just a day after registering 38 points in a loss to Indiana. De’Andre Hunter added 25 points and 11 rebounds in a bounce back game for him. Atlanta now has two days off before heading to the District of Columbia to take on the Wizards on Saturday.
