DerMarr Johnson scored 20 points and pulled down 9 rebounds to lead the undefeated Atlanta Hawks to the championship of the 2002 Shaw’s Pro Summer League with an 85-68 over the previously undefeated Boston Celtics (5-1). Atlanta’s defense stifled the Celtics in the second half, holding them to just 9-for 32 (28.1) from the floor for just 25 points.

The outcome of this game was decided in the first 2:10 of the third quarter. Atlanta (6-0), already leading 47-43 at the half, came out of the locker room and put the game away. Louis Bullock hit a 16-foot jumper, Johnson made a driving layup and then hit two free-throws, and Mario Bennett (17 points, 10 rebounds) hit a 21-footer to put the Hawks up 55-45. Later in the quarter the Hawks went on an 8-2 run, keyed by a Johnson 20-foot jumper and a three by Bullock, to lead 69-53 lead.

With the championship in their sights, the Hawks put the clamps on the Boston offense. They did not allow the Celtics to do anything offensively in the fourth quarter, holding them to just 2-for-17 (11.8 percent) in the quarter. Johnson added 5 points in the quarter as the Hawks sailed to the 17-point win.

Boston kept it close for a half. Forte and Oliver Miller each shot 3-for-3 from the floor in the first quarter and the Celtics trailed only 26-20 after one. Terquin Mott scored 8 points in the second quarter and the Celtics were within 4 at the half, 47-43.

Atlanta’s Dion Glover, who averaged 17.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists, won the Shaw’s Cup as the League’s Most Outstanding Player. Bullock (18 points), Bennett, (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Miles Simon (10 points), joined Johnson in double-figure for the Hawks. Joseph Forte, who led the Celtics in scoring this week with 18.0 points, was Boston’s high scorer with 15 points. Terquin Mott added 14 points and Darius Songailia and Miller added 12 points each in the losing effort.
