    Got an update:

Siakam and KAT are the main two targets. Team would rather have Siakam because his defense is better than KAT's (I love KAT and can't argue this). It sounds like Toronto is willing to accept a more fair deal for him. It also sounds like Siakam is willing to stay in Atlanta. Hunter would be the main piece we send to Toronto.

One source said "it might be getting spicy soon in the ATL" so take that FWIW.

I'm not, I promise lol.  Role players can come and go but establishing a core of Trae/KAT on supermaxes is signing up for a bottom 5 defense perennially.

Could be, but the roster still makes more sense trading for him than either Brown or Siakam. You can't really argue that point.

So backup players will make us contenders?

Backups have to play a role to win a championship.  You didn't see how the backup players just helped Denver win a championship? A deep squad with all NBA talent (s) generally win championships.  I think we'll have that.

Generally, no big three wins it all their first year together too.  I think we can possibly make it to a finals the first year with KAT if things fall right, but again, I think the young guys have to step up OO, AJ, JJ.

So you think this will be a championship roster?

You still got concerns about the $70 million in center with a salary cap that's projected to increase a ton in the next few years?   Just because I told Jaybird, I haven't read the details of the CBA doesn't mean I don't know about the consequences of the new CBA. I like to read things myself to understand them, but I've read tweets about the changes in the new CBA. Hope that doesn't come off as snarky cause I'm not trying to be.

You haven't read the new CBA so its not worth discussing

I haven't read it but I'm aware of the consequences of going into the 2nd Apron. If you continue to draft well, there are no limitations on what you can do with your roster.

So to my knowledge, there's no language in there that stops you from paying players you draft

Here's where we introduce our first wrinkle. In the new collective bargaining agreement, there will be a second "apron." This figure will come in at around $17.5 million above the tax line, and it will trigger a host of restrictions that we will cover in the subsequent sections. The basic idea of those restrictions will be to make it harder for teams like the Los Angeles Clippers and Golden State Warriors to spend significantly more money on talent than their competitors, but we should note that these restrictions will only make it harder for teams to acquire new, expensive players. None of these changes will make it harder to retain players that a team has drafted and developed, and only in a few, rare cases will it become more difficult for teams to retain free agents they've signed from other teams. The NBA wants teams to be able to keep their players. It just doesn't want the rich to get richer.

So that should alleviate any concerns you have about paying the centers $70 million dollars.  Again, if Tony doesn't want to pay to win a championship, that's on him!

So how much money are we investing in the center position again? Like $70 mill per year?

Yup and it ain't our money so we shouldn't worry about it as long as we are keeping our young players with potential.

Agree to disagree on KATs defense but his pay being 5% higher is undeniable which allows for better role players in a JB roster scenario — which could be the difference of being able to keep AJ or JJ longer term if one of both of them pan out how we hope.

We can on the defense.  🙂

If you trade for JB, I'm pretty sure one of them, if not both, will not be on the roster anyway. I think one of the insiders have stated that JJ and AJ would not be included in the KAT trade.  Another reason I support KAT over JB trade.  It keeps continuity while allowing young players to improve in their roles.

I'd rather stand pat than trade for JB. Is he that much better than Murray who'll be about $10 million cheaper?  You can't say the same with KAT.  There's no one on the Hawks team with his skillset at the big man spot.

If we're building around Trae / DJM / OO .... which it really seems like we are. KAT makes more sense for this roster than JB.

And this is coming from one of the bigger JB fans on this board.

Our defense will be fine if Trae plays like he did when Quin got here and DJM, Hunter, and OO all play like we know they can play on that end.

It's the only reason I support this as well. KAT in that lineup makes everything work.

    No.

I’ve thought about KAT a lot and I don’t think any team with him and Trae will be a contender.  The defensive holes those two create are far too great to overcome in the playoffs.  You could have three all-defense players with them, but it wouldn’t matter come playoff time.  Any good coach will target them hard and you just cant hide two ppl, especially not a center.  Probably be a great regular season team though.

I think you are exaggerating how bad KAT's defense is.  Go look at his defense the year before Gobert got there. It was pretty solid. Last year he played out of position so yeah there is some videos showing his bad mistakes.

Trae also picked up on the defensive end a little.  Not saying either will be great.  The perimeter defense is what needs to be improved.

I know you want Brown, but he got cooked in the playoffs and regular season too which everyone seems to gloss over. I don't see how you can support Brown and then be like nah I don't want KAT who will by all means make everyone fit better on the offensive end.  To me KAT, makes the most since because he maximizes Trae who plays through his big men. He also makes OO starting at center make more sense (he'll be PF on defense, center on offense).  To me, KAT solves more roster construction problems because he allows everyone on the team to play to their strengths. I just don't see that with Brown. Defense is a team concept and it'll be about getting stops in the last few minutes of a playoff game and KAT can do that when he wants. He's actually done it against the Hawks a few times and I was surprised because I thought he was just a terrible defender.

All these trade hopefuls are flawed which @Diesel showed.

Just my 2 cents which equates to nothing :).

    PG - Young

    SG - Murray

    SF - MPJ

    PF - OO

    C- KAT

Is this a contender? Works in 2k with the cap off.

Can we even trade for MPJ? Isn't he on that designated rookie max extension like Trae?

I'd rather keep Hunter than trade for MPJ.

    PG - Young, Bufkin

    SG - Murray, Bogi, AJ

    SF - Hunter, AJ, JJ

    PF - KAT, OO, JJ

    C - OO - KAT,

I think that team has at minimum a conference finals potential.

  11. Bump.

Can't wait for the Hawks to trade for KAT this week and watch the fall out.,,lol

I don't think we'll have to give up any of the young guys and if it's Bey, cat is a better shooter.

He just fits too well.  He makes it palatable for OO to start, gives Trae and Dejounte the space they need and would probably help Hunter to with the attention he will draw.

Get that big man here and watch Trae turn him put up all NBA numbers.  Just my two cents to get the conversation started here.

But yet we can pay Kat?  LOL!

They can pay anyone they have bird rights to.  If you draft well, the CBA doesn't punish you.  You can sign your own players until infinity.  It just won't let you trade for or sign players outside of the ones you draft.

If you make a big move this off season, it's the time to do it and you can continue to pay those players and hope to continue to draft well to keep your roster competitive.

I'm personally not worried about how much Luxury tax a billionaire has to pay if our roster is a championship contender.  Right now it may not be but it could be with big additions or big development.  We can do both and I'm okay with it.

Yeah, but I'd only really be happy if we landed Siakam or JB because both of those guys wouldn't be 35% maxes, and both of them stay healthy and would fit well into the roster.  I agree with your sentiment on KAT, and in addition to injury risk, massive drain on cap space, he doesn't fit as well as the other two.  We become really pigeon holed at every other position because Trae+KAT has to be two of the worse defenders at their positions in the NBA.  So making a deal for KAT before giving Snyder time with the roster feels really rushed and could hamstring our top 5 coach's ability to get us to the next level

That’s one of the main reason I like him too. His body, like Jaylen can handle minutes, others seem to fold, these two have been solid thus far.

Jaylen Brown has fit issues too and would cost a 30% max plus more assets to get him than KAT. Wouldn't Murray need to be included in a JB trade?  If you're trading Hunter in the deal who is your SF? You might have to give up JJ and AJ.

How does Jaylen maximize Trae? People talk about KAT's defense, but Jaylen's has been bad too.

Trae plays through his big men and KAT can get his own shot and pairs well with OO on the offensive side.  KAT maximizes what Trae does.

I'm actually more opposed to Jaylen Brown than Pascal or KAT.

What injury history has KAT had other than last year? He missed time before due to Covid to my knowledge.

You've been pumping this and defending this as much as anybody. We can certainly make an avatar on this if you like. I'm betting KAT will not be a Hawk. Care to take my bet?

I'm not pumping anything. Just go look at @JayBirdHawk post and you'll see it's been reported. Just want you to stop saying no one is talking about it when they have spoken about it.  Doesn't mean it's going to happen.
