I'm starting to wonder if we're going to wind up trading down a few spots in this draft.  I think that any of the players worthy of being picked at 8 which realistically could still be on the board, (Culver, Hunter, Reddish) may be gone.  The only player left that is intriguing at 8 if this scenario plays out is Sekou and he is a few years of experience away from really helping and furthermore could be a bust.  Anybody else that is remotely exciting after these guys are more 10-15 draft range picks so why not trade down if this happens.

I don't see them trading down and picking up any additional picks this year.  The whole trade with Boston 10 for 14 plus 20 thing doesn't make sense to me considering TS has said he doesn't want 5 rookies.  Adding a 1st without giving up any of the 2nds just seems to be going in the wrong direction for picks this year.  I COULD see trading out of 10 to fall back to 17 or something but getting a future 1st in return.  That could work.

Personally, I'd like to seem them come out of the draft with 3 picks in the 1st and maybe 1 in the 2nd that they stash in Euro or G-league.  I don't know if that fits what TS is thinking or not, but I'd love for them to have 8 / 10 / and something in the 20s.

Take whoever is left of Culver/Hunter/Reddish at 8, Sekou at 10, and Bruno with the other pick.  Then take someone to develop in the 2nd.  IF Sekou isn't ready, send him to College Park to develop.  I don't mind the timeline lag with him as the Hawks aren't going to be needing him to contribute next year.

Again I ask, before Trae got his 200 point, perfect score in selecting rookie of the year team, who was the last Atlanta Hawk to do this?  Any one know?  Or, has it ever happened before?

    ???

Al Horford was unanimous in 07-08 season.

Prior to Al, Stacey Augmon was the last 1st team All Rookie selection for Hawks but not sure if unanimous.

Before Augmon it was Nique in 82-83.

  3. Was just perusing the free agent list on NBA.com for young wings that are available.  What do y'all think about KCP as a 3-D bench guy?  He's still young, plays decent defense and shoots 35% from distance.  Any interest or pass?

His contract isn't prohibitive particularly for someone who put up 17 and 13 with a block and a half but my assumption is Houston hasn't punted on their championship hopes particularly with GS looking at a transformative summer.  So the issue here is how much immediate value can the Hawks offer Houston, less so about worrying about his numbers being dependent on a high scoring/passing guard (which the Hawks have).

Good question.  I'm not sure if it was TS or LP that said they though Prince was one of the best spot up 3PT shooters in the NBA.  I wonder if Houston would value TP as a 3 and D (enough D for them anyway) player?  To make the money work you'd have to trade Plumlee as well.  And I'd guess they'd want some sort of pick compensation as well.  Still don't know if it would entice them but I'd certainly try it.

I feel like I'm in the twilight zone going back and forth between 2 boards and liking the same post on both.  But I feel obligated to like this on here since I liked it on RGM.  🤣

Also, great interview and the cornerstone comment was very apropos given the recent debates going on ad nauseam (of which I'm guilty of contributing to).

Yeah but as of now only Draymond can shut down Draymond so thats a tough example. Think Capela really helps on the stop end and could possibly help improve Collins in addition to just bailing him out. Either way the plus is bigger than the salary in my mind.

Agree with this.  Plus, if you can get him by just trading out Plumlee's contract plus TP and a pick, I'd do it tomorrow.  Hawks would still have plenty of cap space to use over the next few years.

I wouldn’t touch Capela. I think KG mentioned byproduct of Harden. Any stiff playing with Harden and Paul that had arms and legs would be getting these numbers. Fool’s gold here. I’m not bailing Houston out.

More about the defense, imo. Even if the offense is overstated due to the Harden effect, the defense is legit. Plus Trae makes guys better as well so no guarantee he wouldn't be a quality offensive big.

  8. Hawks could trade Plumlee / Prince / No. 10 Pick for Capela.  Prince fits Houstons 3pt barrage concept, Plumlee would give them cap relief and the pick would be young talent.

Hawks could have a young core of:

    Trae / Huerter / Reddish / JC / Capela

And they'd still have $30 - $40 Mil to spend this season in FA and Baze coming off the books next year.  I kinda like it, again IF LP and TS think they could make JC and Capela fit together.

  9. 21 minutes ago, JayBirdHawk said:

Houston can't take both Plumlee and Baze.

But I'm more interested in how he affects our cap moving forward as well, not just this season.

Yes, we need defense - I just prefer if we are getting a defensive player with very limited and not much varied offensive skillset he shouldn't cost $73 mil +. Might as well sign Nerlens Noel for $3 mil.

Yeah, should have read "combination of baze plumlee and future 1st and TP"

I like the player and while the money is a lot, he provided 10.8 WS and a PER of 23.8 last season and he's only 25.  He's one of the top defenders in the league averaging 16 pts / 12 reb a game.  I get that he doesn't space the floor, but IF LP and TS thought they could make it work, I'd live with the salary.

He's got 4 years left on his contract at $16.5M / $17.5M / $18.5M / $19.5M.  I don't think that's outrageous by any means.  Hawks would still have $30M or so in FA to spend in the next few years, depending on what contracts they signed this year.

  10. 27 minutes ago, JTB said:

Well this seems to be thought process that everyone hawk fan has for the center position “keeping the floor spread as much as possible at all cost” other than me lol but I will roll with it.

I think this comes from a comment Pierce made a while back saying the offense needs a floor spacing C. I think he made it in regards to Dedmon. Now I'm not sure if that comment is absolute (probably isn't) so we fans have probably taken it to the extreme.

Also, now that I see the contract, it's a big ask imo. I'd gladly swap baze Plumlee and a future pick (would even though in TP) for Capela but would NOT trade for him using our cap space. That's a non starter for me. Not sure Houston has any interest in our bad contracts.

DP: Did you go to any playoff games?

    T: Went to game 3 POR/OKC and game 3 HOU/GSW.

DP: What did you take away?  Do you watch as a fan?

T: I watch as more than a fan.  I know the sets/know what's coming.  I noted that the atmosphere was different, fans were much more engaged.  I wanted to experience it before we're in it.

I mean...the kid just gets it.  Love how "heady" this kid is.  How many rookies would go to a playoff game to see what it's like and be ready for it later on?

I got a lot of new details from yesterday and calls this morning:

Pelicans: AD in the meeting a couple of days ago indicated he wanted a trade to the Lakers. While he wouldn't resign with the Knicks, he would consider it. I was also told that Griffin and Gentry both like the Lakers package if it's the kitchen sink. I was told the only player off the table for the Lakers is Josh Hart. The deal will revolve around Ball (centerpiece), Kuz, BI who Griffin loves, and Hunter who the Pelicans are coveting with #4.

Their free agent target is Brook Lopez and then Dedmon. They want a center who can shoot next to Zion. They want to switch everything 1-4 and play more fast. They love the idea of Ball/Jrue/Hunter/Zion and want BI and Kuz for depth. They believe they can make the playoffs next year.

Bulls: They want one of the PG's. That's not new but it's unlikely seeing that LAL is zoning in on Garland. They are a team in a bad place. Garland is their top target on their board that possible.

Lakers: They want AD then Beal. They strongly feel they can get AD. They want Kyrie in FA but if they miss on him and Kemba. They want Lowry.

Knicks: Knicks want AD as well. They want Durant with Leonard. They also want Kyrie or Kemba. From what I am hearing, it's going to be Durant and Kemba.

Nets: Kyrie #1 team is Brooklyn and they want Kyrie. They also want to trade Allen Crabbe BAD but don't want to move out of the mid 1st. Something has to give. Jimmy Butler also wants to go to Brooklyn if the Lakers don't show the interest that Bron has showed to Jimmy.

Cavs: They are selling the J.R. Smith contract like a beast asset and it is not to most teams but teams still want it.

Raptors: If they lose Leonard, they will try to sell Ibaka, Gasol if he opts in and Lowry. Build around Siakam, O.G. and Green. They are trying to get a lot of assets for the 2020 draft if Leonard leaves.

Jazz: They really really want Mike Conley. It seems like a forgone conclusion as well.

Grizzles: They wanted a mid 1st for Conley and cap space and will likely get it. They really want Thad Young.

Warriors: It seems like it's not just people I know close to Leonard anymore. It seems like the Warriors top target is Leonard this off-season as much as keeping Durant and Klay.

So the Warriors want to swap KD for Kawhi?  Damn.  Do they even have the Cap space for that?

  13. Is that a me problem or a site problem?  When I get to the end of a page, I've tried to click NEXT and I've tried clicking the numeral for the next page and both take me to blank screen.  The only way I can change pages is to exit back to the main page and click on the numeral of the page I want to see.  Unfortunately, some of the numerals for the longer threads don't show up on the main page so I'm stuck.  Is there a fix on my end for this or is this part of the site working the kinks out?

    Thanks!

Yah, Yah I know its only 4 games but I'm posting this while I still can. Putting a little feed out for the trolls.

Yeah.......there's no way in HELL that Cavs pick is going to transfer.  Sucks but at least the Mavs pick should transfer.  They might not make the playoffs but there are at least 8 or 9 teams that I think are worse than they are.  And they are TRYING to win at least.  Might need to prepare ourselves for 2 lotto picks and neither being Top 3.  Could easily see Hawks pick 6-8 and Mavs pick 10-12.

He left the 2nd quarter of the the 2nd preseason??game and all that was said was he wouldn't return.

Not much info aboutvwhat exactly is wrong.

How wrong is it that my skepticism / cynical nature has me thinking his actual diagnosis is "being too good to play against the Knicks, Grizz, Cavs, Mavs, and Bulls."

Oh well, I guess we wait...

The Hawks seemed to be intentionally going to Prince on the opening possessions running set plays to free him up for open looks. Prince, who is now shooting 64.0% from the field and 63.6% on threes during his three preseason appearances, appears to be reaping the rewards of a well-documented summer of work and dedication to his game.

I know it's only 3 games and preseason games at that but Korver, Ray Allen, Reggie Miller and company better watch out. Prince might be coming to break records. His peers will have to respect then...

I'm going to go out on a limb and say if Prince hits 60% from 3 this season the Hawks will be riding high into the playoffs.

But seriously, I'm excited about him and his reported improvements.  Prince, JC, and Young could make a really fun core to watch this year.

  17. I'm generally optimistic on the team, but I'm not sure I can get to 39 wins until I see more of the rookies.  The only real weak players I see are Plumlee and Bembry but I don't think either are going to be relied upon as major contributors.  And I freely admit a lot of my doubt about Bembry results from his injuries and lack of production thus far.

With that said, the tough thing to predict about this squad, to me, is that the guys they really NEED to be successful and to rely on to win a lot of games are the youngest on the team.  They NEED Trae and Collins to be elite if they are going to win a lot of games.  But they are 1st and 2nd year players.  While I think Collins is ready to break out, I really have no idea about Trae and how quickly he will see real success.  Will it be in his first year?  I don't know.

At the end of the day, I'm really happy with the way the team is constructed right now and I think the potential is there to really surprise a lot of folks in their predictions.  It will just come down to how quickly the young guys get acclimated to the NBA and start to see success.

I dream of the scenario where the Hawks somehow win 30-35 games this year on the backs of Trae, Collins, and Prince, are the talk of the NBA all year, AND have $50 Million in Cap Space to spend next summer.

Here we go again with the wild speculations just like the week of the draft and none of it happened.  Why does this site love to speculate about Fake News?

I agree with you leading up  to the draft and even after the draft when there wasn't anything other than speculation.  This "feels" different though.  It's more specific and being cited by multiple people.  Doesn't mean a deal will happen, but I'm skeptical that someone has just made up the specifics of this trade and reported it if it was fake news.

The end result of what they did was losing, but losing was not their goal.  Their goal was to replenish their system with young talent.

So losing was just a by-product of their re-build? Losing was just the unhappy accident that came along with trading away vets for young talent and or picks?  Now see, THIS is an opinion that I can buy into.  That makes total sense.  Their goal was never to intentionally lose but to simply restock their system with young talent.  Got it.

Wait...that sounds awfully similar to something else I've read about......like trading away older vets for assets and picks in order to replenish a system with young talent.  Hm. Where have I read that before?

Let's use Lebron as the example. Lebron was drafted by Cleveland and spent his first 7 years there. But then he got frustrated and went title shopping. He went to Miami as a free agent to get his ring.  If Lebron hadn't had OHIO ties, he wouldn't have gone back to Cleveland and they wouldn't have gotten their ring...12 years after they drafted him.  Remember, Lebron's Cleveland championship wasn't due to their tank or to him being drafted by them, it was due to Lebron negotiating some level of control in personnel decisions to sign as a free agent and Cleveland spending the money to bring in a butt load of free agents and going into the Luxury Tax. Cleveland bought a championship, they didn't draft one.

Yes GS drafted Curry, Thompson and Green (not a lottery pick) but in the 2 years before winning the championship, they also traded for or signed Iquodala, Murphy, Crawford, Brooks, Blake, Livingston, Rush, Barbosa.  They traded/signed their way to a championship....which they wouldn't have been able to do except for the dumb luck that Curry was injury prone his first 3 years and was resigned on the cheap.

And another thing, if you go back and look at the title teams over the last 10, 20, 30 years, they ALL have at least one elite player that was drafted by that team.  Maybe not drafted No. 1 overall, but drafted nonetheless.  So it's utterly ridiculous to try to claim that the draft isn't important when building a championship roster.

GSW - Steph, Klay, Draymond, Barnes

CAVS - Kyrie, Love (via trade for the No. 1 Wiggins)

SAS - Duncan, Manu, Parker, Kawhi (I think he was a draft night trade with Pacers if I remember correctly)

    Heat - Dwade

    Mavs - Dirk

    Lakers - Kobe

    Celtics - Rondo, Pierce

And the list goes on and on....
