"It all began in late June. Sensing the Bucks had to break up the Big Three -- which was George Karl's last chance at self-preservation and sanity -- Knicks GM Scott Layden called Bucks counterpart Ernie Grunfeld and suggested a Sprewell-Glenn Robinson exchange. Grunfeld, recognizing that such a deal would make his team smaller -- not to mention undermine his best player, Ray Allen -- immediately said no. Then, typically, he remained silent as the Knicks spread rumors that they were the ones who turned down Grunfeld's offer of Big Dog for Spree.

Indeed, just the opposite was true.

Shortly thereafter, Layden tried again. This time, he offered Sprewell, Othella Harrington and Charlie Ward for Tim Thomas, Joel Pryzbilla, and (no kidding) Allen. And Grunfeld, already chapped at the way the last conversation with Layden went, "hung up the phone after a nanosecond of consideration," according to an Eastern Conference executive who was familiar with the conversation"
