Another chance for Terps (7-3-03).

While Holden watched the draft, his agent Keith Glass fielded calls from the Atlanta Hawks, one of seven teams to express interest. They called four times during the draft just to make sure Holden didn't commit to any other team's summer camp.

Once the draft ended and Glass saw the Hawks hadn't picked any other towering forwards, Holden committed to Atlanta's camp.

He reports July 9, at which point he'll start making his case for belonging on an NBA roster.

"I knew there were plenty of opportunities to make a team," Holden said of not worrying too much about the draft. "I just have to go the long way about it. And if the Hawks don't want me, maybe another team will see what I'm doing."

For the past three years, the Atlanta Hawks have been searching for a tall point guard who twould allow playmaker Jason Terry to move to the two guard. The Hawks finally got what they were searching for when 6-9 Boris Diaw of Pau Orthez was still available at No. 21. Diaw averaged 7.3 points and 5.3 rebounds last season.

Besides calling Pippen, Paxson reached out to four or five agents Tuesday, telling them to put the Bulls on their clients' list of possibilities.

If the Bulls don't end up with Pippen, they are likely to pursue 6-7 Atlanta swingman Ira Newble, who averaged 7.7 points and 3.7 rebounds last season.

Newble's agent, Steve Kaufman, said he received four "serious" calls about the 28-year-old Detroit native.

"He's a good fit for (the Bulls)," Kaufman said. "He can fill what they need. He's very interested."

Besides Pippen and Newble, some other players who may interest the Bulls are Kendall Gill, Jim Jackson, Steve Smith and Voshon Lenard.

Indiana assistant Jim Stack, the former Bulls assistant general manager, will be in later this week, and Paxson also is hoping to speak with Terry Stotts, Atlanta's interim head coach who is expected to move on when new ownership takes control of the Hawks.

Atlanta:

Last season, the summer leagues were supposed to be Chris Crawford's time to come back and complete the rehabilitation on his injured left knee. Unfortunately, before he could get to the tipoff, Crawford was informed by the Hawks athletic trainer Wally Blasé that would need to undergo an additional arthroscopic surgery on the same knee. By the time the season was over, Crawford had played in just five games, making the 03-04' season very important to his career.
