An agent said Tuesday that the Heat's personnel search could include a potential sign-and-trade deal with the Hawks regarding guard Jason Terry, a restricted free agent.

Chat wrap: Marc Stein (7-9-03).

todd (tennessee): Dear Mark, any way you can see the Hawks improving this off-season? Any free agents their looking at? Thanks in advance.

Marc Stein: Not really. This ownership delay is horrible for them. The Hawks are somewhat paralyzed waiting to see if David McDavid's purchase of the team goes through and, until they know for sure, what can they do? An interesting theory floating these days: What if some other team comes in right now with a big offer to restricted free agent Jason Terry? Who authorizes matching that offer, if there's even a small chance the sale doesn't go through?

Tuesday, small forward Ira Newble visited the Berto Center in Deerfield, but Paxson said no deal with any free agent was imminent. Newble, 28, averaged 7.7 points and 3.7 rebounds per game with Atlanta last season.

"We have a need for a wing player," Paxson said. "Newble would fill a role for us, especially at the defensive end."

THRASHERS: David McDavid said he expects his purchase of the team and the NBA's Hawks from AOL Time Warner to be done in the next few weeks. In April, the world's biggest media company entered an exclusive negotiating period with McDavid, a former minority owner of the NBA Mavericks. "Because it's all intertwined with AOL, it's been far more tedious than we thought," McDavid said. "But we're progressing. I expect it to be done in the next few weeks." Neither the company nor McDavid would say how much he has agreed to pay for the teams and their home, Philips Arena.

Newble a possibility in case Pippen decides not to return (7-8-03).

John Paxson will make his first free-agent pitch as Bulls general manager when Atlanta swingman Ira Newble arrives in Chicago tonight.

The 6-foot-7 Newble averaged 7.7 points and 3.7 rebounds for the Hawks last season. The Bulls believe he can be the defensive-minded small forward the team has sought, and Newble figures to be the No. 1 target if Scottie Pippen refuses Paxson's offer to finish his career with the Bulls.

"If you're Ira, you can't be upset about being the backup plan to a great player who was also important to the franchise," said Steve Kaufman, Newble's agent. "He'd be very interested in playing in Chicago. He'd complement the players they have."

Newble, 28, grew up in the Detroit area and played at Miami of Ohio following two years of junior college. He logged four years in the Continental Basketball Association and a season in Cyprus before spending 27 games with San Antonio in the 2000-01 season. Last year was Newble's first full season in the NBA.

If they decide to pursue Newble, it shouldn't be hard for the Bulls to lure him away from Atlanta. He was paid the six-year veteran's minimum of $762,000 last season.

The Hawks would like him back but are on the threshold of paying the luxury tax, they have no general manager and are awaiting league approval of a sale of the team to Texan David McDavid.

The Bulls, with a smaller overall payroll than Atlanta, can offer any portion of their mid-level exception, worth around $4.5 million. They also expect to have an injury exception worth $1.85 million because Jay Williams will almost certainly miss the coming season.
