Atlanta - Mike Dunleavy held out as long as he thought he could, hoping the Hawks could get to a point where they could discuss the head coaching position in Atlanta. It never happened, and now Dunleavy is the new head coach of the LA Clippers.

Former Cougar Hansen signs contract with Hawks:

The Atlanta Hawks signed guard/forwards Boris Diaw of France and Travis Hansen of Brigham Young, their first- and second-round picks in last month's NBA draft.

The Hawks didn't disclose terms of the contracts. Diaw, selected with the 21st overall pick, is guaranteed about $3.29 million over the next three seasons under the NBA's rookie salary scale for first-round picks. There is no salary scale for second-round picks.

Hansen, 25, played one season at Utah Valley State, served two years on a Mormon mission, then played for BYU for three seasons. Last season, he was named the Mountain West Conference's Co-Defensive Player of the Year along with University of Nevada-Las Vegas's Marcus Banks.

The 6-foot-6 Hansen averaged 13.2 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists during his career at BYU. He led the team with 16.8 points a game last season. He was named to the All-Tournament team at the Portsmouth Invitation Tournament this summer after averaging 15.7 points while shooting 57.6 percent from the floor.

Reinsdorf has chat with Pippen (7-10-03).

Paxson is fully aware that the longer the Bulls wait on Pippen, the greater the chance they lose out on other available free agents such as Ira Newble, who visited this week.

Pippen also would command the entire midlevel exception, and Newble isn't likely to sign for the $1.8 million medical exception that will be granted for Jay Williams' injuries.

"I'm not being dishonest with agents," Paxson said. "If Scottie doesn't come here, we will be in a position to talk to Ira more. We'll make the best decision for the organization."

Stephen A. Smith | In the race for free agents, East comes up least again (7-10-03).

Of the 20 top free agents on the market, one (Jason Terry) will likely stay in Atlanta while another (Richard Hamilton) will remain in Detroit, solely because they are restricted free agents, and the Hawks and the Pistons possess the right to match whatever offers they receive.
