One other Knicks option could involve a trade with Atlanta for center Theo Ratliff. Since the draft, new Hawks general manager Billy Knight told at least one Eastern Conference GM that he would listen to offers. The question is whether he can act on them before the Hawks' ownership situation is settled.

Cavaliers to sign former Hawk Ira Newble (7-21-03).

CLEVELAND - Forward Ira Newble is expected to sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday, providing much-needed depth to the team's frontcourt.

Newble, who spent the past two seasons with the Atlanta Hawks, will be the Cavaliers' second free-agent signing this offseason. Point guard Kevin Ollie signed last week to help mentor top draft pick LeBron James.

The Cavaliers will make Newble's signing official at a Tuesday news conference at Gund Arena, a team spokesman said Monday.

Newble will likely back up Darius Miles at small forward. He started 80 of his 115 games the past two seasons with Atlanta and averaged 7.7 points and 3.7 rebounds with a .495 field-goal percentage in 2002-03.

Newble, a Miami of Ohio product, also played in 27 games for San Antonio in the 2000-01 season.

7) Jason Terry - 6-2 PG - Atlanta Hawks

Terry is a shooting guard who can also pretend to be a point guard. He hasn't fit in with the Hawks, but no one else has either, so we're not sure that should entirely be held against JT. He's quick, can score and pass, and puts his heart out on the floor.

Williams and Outlaw are connected because each attended the University of Houston. Williams left school after his junior season last year, wasn't drafted and was invited to the Atlanta Hawks' training camp. He didn't make the Hawks and spent last season playing in the National Basketball Developmental League for the Roanoke Dazzle, where he averaged 4.5 points and 2.6 rebounds.

Earlier, Atlanta Hawks president Stan Kasten said it was wrong to try to link the two, although he knew the timing of the charges against Bryant will be taken by some observers as a cautionary tale. "People need to remember that LeBron isn't the first high school guy we've brought into the league."

"He's a good athlete but he has a long way to go," said former NBA All-Star Dominique Wilkins, who coached Atlanta's summer league team. "There's going to be a lot of pressure put on him by defenders at the point. He's going to get those quick point guards that will pick him up at full court and they'll want to turn him a lot. I personally would like to see him at the two [shooting guard] because he has a bigger advantage, plain and simple."
