Hawks trading Big Dog to Sixers? (7-22-03).

http://www.ajc.com/hawks/content/sports/ha...03/23hawks.html

In a four-team deal reportedly in the works on Tuesday, the Hawks could be trading Glenn Robinson to the Philadelphia 76ers.

If the deal is finalized, reports say the Hawks would acquire 5-11 guard Terrell Brandon from Minnesota. The Timberwolves would get guard/forward Latrell Sprewell from the New York Knicks while forward Keith Van Horn would go to New York from the 76ers.

Brandon hasn't played since February 2002 because of fractured cartilage in his left knee.

Abdur-Rahim undergoes back surgery (7-22-03).

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Shareef Abdur-Rahim had minor surgery on Tuesday morning to repair chronic back problems that have bothered the Atlanta Hawks forward since last season.

Abdur-Rahim, who missed last year's season-opener against New Jersey with a stiff back, elected to have the surgery instead of undergoing lengthy conservative treatment. His rehab is expected to take 10-12 weeks.

The 26-year-old Abdur-Rahim averaged 19.9 points, 8.4 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.07 steals for the Hawks last season, leading the team with a .478 field goal percentage.

He should be available to start the 2003-04 campaign.

Holden started in all six games for Atlanta and helped the Hawks post a 3-3 overall record. He finished fourth on the team in total rebounds with 25 and an average of 4.2 per game. Holden was also tied for second on the Hawks with six steals and four blocks. He averaged 4.2 points per game.

Possible deals for Ratliff have been held up while the Hawks go through an ownership change. David McDavid, who made his fortune with a chain of automobile dealerships in Texas, is in the process of purchasing the Hawks. Problems with the paperwork have held up the transaction and cast doubts on whether Ratliff will leave the Hawks.

The New York Knicks also are in the running for Campbell and Ratliff.

AOL Time Warner would retain a small ownership stake in the Atlanta Hawks and Thrashers — but no voice in the teams' operation — under a complex sales agreement expected to be completed soon with Texas auto dealer David McDavid.

Central Division (7-18-03).

What they need: The Hawks are waiting on completion of the team's sale from AOL to Texas businessman David McDavid -- there were many snags, apparently, but the deal is close to getting done. In the meantime, Jason Terry is in limbo. He wants to return to Atlanta, but he has not been able to negotiate a deal. Even with Terry, and with rookies Hansen and Diaw on board, the team will need backcourt help and role players. They're expected to lose Newble, Glover and Jackson. Robert Horry included the Hawks on his list of potential new teams. There also is the issue of the payroll, which is far too high for a team that has accomplished so little. Big-ticket players like Abdur-Rahim, Ratliff and Robinson will be shopped.
