In what President Dana White said will be “the biggest fight in UFC history” in a conference call today, mixed martial arts legend Randy Couture will return to the octagon to face rising star Brock Lesnar for the heavyweight title on November 15, 2008 in Las Vegas.

The announcement ended the UFC’s long contract dispute with Couture, the 44-year old and former All-American wrestler at Oklahoma State. Couture vacated his heavyweight title due to the dispute and hasn’t fought in over a year, when he defeated Gabriel Gonzaga for the heavyweight title on August 25, 2007. Couture holds a career record of 15-8.

Lesnar, a former NCAA heavyweight wrestling champion at Minnesota and WWE star, is only 2-1 in his mixed martial arts career and 1-1 in the UFC.

Current interim heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogeuira will retain that title.

The winner of the upcoming Nogueira vs. Frank Mir fight will face the winner of Couture-Lesnar for the title.

White laughed when asked if Lesnar was in line for a title shot after his win over Heath Herring at UFC 87 in Minnesota, saying “Well, he just won his first fight in the UFC.”

But popular demand for the fight caused him to change his mind.

“We can basically put on fights that the fans want to see,” he said. “You look at the amount of buzz and energy in this fight, you have one of the most popular fighters in UFC history and a lot of people are interested in Brock Lesnar now, not just WWE fans.”
