The Atlanta Hawks (7-7) faced the Washington Wizards (2-13) on Saturday night in a matchup of intra-divisional foes.

This was the second matchup between these two sides this season, as Atlanta beat Washington 130-121 back on November 1st - using a +14 advantage in second chance points and a +20(!) advantage from the free-throw stripe to secure the victory. Additionally, this was the first night of a back-to-back for the Hawks, as they’ll be traveling to Boston to take on the Celtics tomorrow evening.

Atlanta had it going on both ends of the court early on, and jumped out to an early 17-6 lead.

After an early timeout, Washington picked up the slack on offense, however the Hawks continued to hit shots on the other end, and held a 30-23 lead with 2:05 left in the opening frame.

The two sides traded punches for the rest of the quarter, before Landry Shamet hit a three with three seconds to go which cut Atlanta’s lead to 34-30.

There was a worrying moment early in the second quarter when Jalen Johnson went to the locker room after taking a hard fall underneath the basket while going up for a transition finish. He shot his free-throws then headed to the locker-room. He was later ruled out for the rest of the game.

The Hawks continued to do a good job turning defense into offense, and by the 6-minute mark in the second quarter, they had turned seven steals into 11 fast-break points. However some timely three-point shooting by the Wizards kept Atlanta’s lead at bay, as they were only ahead 50-46.

After a timeout by Quin Snyder, the Hawks closed the quarter on a 20-12 run. De’Andre Hunter splashed a corner triple just before halftime to give him a team-high 16 points going into the break.

Atlanta picked up where they left off in the second half, as they stretched their lead to 20 points midway through the third quarter thanks to more easy transition finishes like the one below from Saddiq Bey (hat-tip to Trae Young for the set-up).

Washington looked lifeless, while Atlanta were simply dominant on both ends of the floor, and by the end of the period the Hawks held a comfortable 107-78 lead.

Atlanta continued to steamroll the Wizards in the 4th quarter, with Trae Young knocking down this step-back three over Landry Shamet to give him 5 triples on the night. It’s great to see Young looking comfortable from beyond the arc again as he has now hit five three-pointers or more in three consecutive games.

With Atlanta nursing a healthy lead, Patty Mills made his season debut at the 4:55 mark of the fourth quarter.

When it was all said and done, the Hawks won by a final score of 136-108. Trae Young led the way for Atlanta with 26 points (9-for-17 from the floor, 5-for-8 from 3) 10 assists and six rebounds in 30 minutes of action. Dejounte Murray finished with 11 points, 10 assists, five rebounds and four steals. Clint Capela had another double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
