There are 3 or 4 other RFAs who are almost as good as Smith who haven't received any offers from their teams. Who said Smith was being loyal to the Hawks' organization ? I'm thinking it's just the opposite, after his agent probably spread countless BS rumors to make the Hawks throw an offer at him out of desperation. I'm not worried about Smith going anywhere, and if he does, I'll trust that we will be compensated appropriately. The only reason why players don't take the QO is because of the risk of being injured without a good guaranteed deal. It's 1 year at a lower salary than the Hawks can offer. However, next year, there will be quite a few teams with full pockets. IF we lowball or disrespect Smoove in these negotiations, you can guarantee.. that the young hothead will probably play this year on a QO... which will signal to the league that he's not staying in Atlanta. The best case scenerio is that he plays for us under a new contract and the worst for the fans is that he plays either in Europe or he signs a QO. Just because they are not popular choices doesn't mean that they won't be done. Not only that, but what if his production drops off ? What if the market for PF is significantly worse next year ? On top of that the QO is significantly less money than what he would normally make, right ?
  2. Quote: Leverage or not, its never good to have a reputation as a crappy organization. Especially a group like the ASG where people already think they are poor and cheap. As far as "why rush?" If we had gotten an idea of how much we'd be paying we could have gone after a guy like Buike' instead of having to fill our shooter/defender on the wing role through FA. If the ASG intended to go after Buike or any other FA, they could have. It's pretty apparent the only FAs they are looking at are Cs. I think it was their plan all along to get their shooter from SL.

For the first time in a decade we will have a complete roster with a traditional 1-5 and all of them will have good size for their position. You talk out of both sides of you mouth! On the one hand you say I'm a hater when I suggest it may be a good trade and on the other you say it is perfect. In reality I like Smith and realize that he is a 22 yr old kid. I have a 22 yr old daughter and part of her is still very much a kid. He's growing up and i think this process will HELP HIM GROW UP SOME MORE. Part of what makes us mature is learning to be patient and delay gratification. both of which he's going through. I'm sure he had hopes of signing a huge contract in a matter of days . . . . . meanwhile back in the real world . . . . . things don't work that way. I'm pretty sure he was just being sarcastic.

For the first time in a decade we will have a complete roster with a traditional 1-5 and all of them will have good size for their position. Our rebounding (both defensive and offensive) should improve with no drop off in defense. In fact, our defense could potentially improve, depending on if Horford makes big strides next year. The success of this trade depends on Horford, because if he can stretch his range on his shot to about 17-18 feet, we will be a handful on offense.
  5. Quote: If you would entertain trading Smoove then you are obviously a hater and secretly want him gone. In all seriousness though, Kaman and a 1st for Smoove and Speedy is probably about as good as we can expect if we HAVE to trade Smoove. I'm still holding out hope that he will be back next year but every time a story like this comes out it worries me a bit. Not just any old hater. An internet closet hater. I wouldn't be upset at all if we received Kaman and a 1st round draft pick for Josh Smith. I believe that is fair value for Josh Smith, and having an offensive post presence like Kaman will help our half court offense. We'll have somewhat of an answer to Dwight Howard, Brendan Haywood, and all the other 7 footers we have to face in the east.
  6. Quote: Quote: Quote: Quote: Quote: Quote: Why would ASG go for a SNT instead of just resigning Smoove? It's stupid to let him hang out there when there's nobody persuing him any more. They're the ASG is why this is taking so long. A lot of top RFAs haven't signed deals with their teams. Why should we rush ? It's not like we ever had intentions of making a big splash in the FA market. What? Your line of thinking doesn't make sense. Wouldn't the fact that we weren't thinking about having a huge splash on free agency make it more likely for us to lock up our RFA as soon as possible? I mean. What are we waiting for? What FA are we waiting to be freed up? what deal are we waiting to be made? No team is making Smoove an offer, so why WOULDN'T we make him an offer???? Doesn't make any sense to me Just like the article says, we've got leverage. We could also be waiting on the irresistible S&T offer. The bottom line is Smith isn't going anywhere unless the ASG lets him go. That means, no matter how upset Smith is about how long things are taking or whatever, he will still be a Hawk next year if the ASG desires. We could wait until the middle of the season to offer an extension, theoretically. I'm not a part of the ASG, so I don't fully understand all of their options. However, withholding a contract offer does nothing to hurt the ASG.. It's dangerous to mistreat your own free agents. How many times have Smoove said he wanted to stay? So the way that we compensate his loyalty is by holding out just in case a good SNT comes along? Internally, we should know Smoove's worth. IF Smoove gets too tired of us waiting, he can easily just take the QO. It's not the smartest move, but if he doesn't play "all out".. he can make it to next offseason and leave us with nothing... or force us to trade him for less than his value during the season. Then you know what you'll be saying...."we should have locked him up when we could!" The chances of Smith taking the QO are the chances of me playing in the NBA (I'm 5'9 150, so you figure it out). Smith is not being "mistreated", he's just being impatient. There are 3 or 4 other RFAs who are almost as good as Smith who haven't received any offers from their teams. Bibby Johnson Prince Horford Bierdens Law/Claxton Richardson/Jackson Childress Solo/Johnson Golden State just signed Maggette and already has Wright and Harrington who all play basically the same position as Marvin. I doubt the have any interest in him. Zaza That would be a REAL nice team. Thing about Golden State is they interchange their players at different positions. Like they will have Wright play the 4 or the 5 and even AL playing the 3 or the 4 (if hes even around this year). Just depends on matchups. Why would they give up Biedrins (their starting C) to fill a position they already have filled with a player who is better than Marvin ? They just lost Azubuike, Pietrus who can both play the 2 or the 3 and Matt Barnes isnt even resigned (yet) and al harrington (forward/center via nba.com) may not be on the team next year, even if he is, he can play the 4 and the 5 for them. Yeah they signed Maggette, but do you not think you wont see Ellis and Maggette in the same back court next year in different scenarios? Ellis isn't a PG, which is why they are still looking for one. Maggette could play SG, but he's really a SF. Not to mention they still have Stephen Jackson. On top of that, they drafted another SF. They've got Brandon Wright and Al Harrington to play PF. I also think they drafted another PF. Also, chances are they will resign Matt Barnes. So tell me, why would they trade their only rebounder and their best big for Marvin Williams again ? You arent listening. The players they have play multiple positions. Trying to pigeon whole the players into 1 position is ludacris. Matt Barnes is not signed as of yet so you cant count on him returning, especially if they find a better option. Croeshere gone, Azubeuke gone, Pietrus gone. Brandon Wright also plays center, I dont know if you noticed that when they came to Atlanta last year when Bierdens was hurt. And Ellis will be bringing the ball up the floor quite a bit, I dont care if hes labeled a PG or not. Randolph is a rookie and with his size he could play any of number of positions up front(if hes even ready), especially if they play 'small ball'. Not saying the trade happends, but to say Marvin doesnt make any sense there is not true. Ok. So maybe the trade never happens. The point I'm really trying to make is they have several players to play the two positions Marvin could fill on a roster. Here is the depth chart for their frontcourt: SF: Maggette/Jackson/Randolph PF: Harrington/Wright/Hendrix C: Biedrins/Harrington/Perovic Considering the fact that Maggette and Jackson are both better small forwards, the only other place for Marvin is PF, right ? Well, actually no. Harrington is a better PF than Marvin, and while Wright hasn't proven much, It's a safe assumption that Wright is the better fit at the PF. So unless you think Golden State would play Marvin at C or SG, I don't see how (outside the fact that I don't think they would trade Biedrins) a Marvin for Biedrins trade would work. Heres the deal. If the trade for Marvin went down, Bierdens wouldnt be on that roster and you have Harrington down 2 times so thats 7 players left for 3 positions because your dismissing the shooting guard spot which Mag or Jackson could/will play. Who knows if they can even get a pg thats decent enough to play with Ellis. Therefore if I am GS I think im putting Mags in the backcourt with Ellis and that gives me a pretty darn good backcourt. Al was still the better forward at the time in Atlanta but that didnt stop us from letting him move on and to be honest I dont think Marvin would take a backseat to randolph or hendrix. Jackson is also 30 and doesnt have that much left on his deal so if they would re-up Marvin, Jackson would be on the way out. Alot of what ifs. Not saying any trade will happen just saying it can make sense. Jackson would still start over Marvin Williams, because right now Stephen Jackson is the better player. So, whatever position Marvin plays, he'd still be on the bench.
  8. So because Marvin is a little clumsy, he cannot run fast and jump high ? Ok. That makes sense.
  9. Not to mention GS just got PF Ronny Turiaf from LA, who will probably be the backup PF.
  10. Quote: Quote: So exodus if you have to pick in a pickup game you pickin Smoove or Al J? I would take Jefferson over Smith in a pickup game or on an NBA roster. He is a legit 20/10 big and those are hard to find. I agree. Big men are dominant in the NBA, but even more dominant in pick up games. Especially when they are strong and skilled, in addition to being tall. Since Smoove can't shoot, you can put a slightly smaller guy on him and keep him out the lane.

  13. Quote: Falcons will be better than some pesimestic fans believe. They won't be great. They can't expect to win everything this season. Two things to remember. We believe we have a better coach this season. He may fool us and be a complete flop. Not likely to happen. Too much NFL experience to believe that this will happen, although he has never been a head coach. How many games did Atlanta win last season? Four, I believe. With all that went wrong last season, we should win more this season. We should be much better prepared with the players we have this time around. Remember, somehow the NFL arranges their schedule so that the teams with the worst record in the previous season will not have as tough a schedule as the top teams. Our final roster is not set - not yet. This could change some things. We'll just have to wait and see on this. Doubling last season'r win total may be a litle too high, but not much - Let's say seven. It's not unreasonable for us to win atleast 6 games this year. In terms of actual talent, our team has not declined from last year. Crumpler, Dunn, Hall, and Coleman were all pretty bad last year. I believe our offense will be better than last year, and our defense will be about the same if not better. Not to mention we play in the worst division in the entire NFL. I'm going to make a bold, homer prediction and say we squeak into the playoffs with 8 wins.

Exciting season will be coming up ! Definitely! All of our young players are a year old and more experienced. Our star player and team captain is in the prime of his career. The East'll be more competitive making for a very interesting, nail biting playoff race.

  21. That is a terrible trade, and I'm really thinking it's made up. If it was Rasheed Wallace, Arron Afflalo, and Amir Johnson , I might think about it. However, Detroit would still have to throw in a draft pick to make me want to trade Josh Smith. EDIT: You know what..scratch that. I don't know what I was thinking. The whole idea behind getting Rasheed Wallace would be to allow Smith to play 3, but if he gets traded, then it's pointless.
  22. Quote: He signed an offer sheet with the Clippers today.... Damn.
  23. Quote: Quote: D, are you saying Marv gets preferential treatment???? Not at all. I'm saying that there are calls that go his way that should not. When you bowl somebody over, you should be called for the foul (offensive). I'm saying that a ref is quicker to call blocking than to call charging. You just contradicted yourself. Quote: Watch the games. Most of the time, Marvin has his head down and is running out of control and he bowls into a man. Maybe the man doesn't keep a stationary position seeing Marvin falling head first into him... but it happens. That's clearly a blocking foul.
  24. Quote: Quote: Quote: #1. Marvin/Speedy for Chauncey Billups. Briefly, after this trade, we line up Bibby, Billups, JJ, JS, Horf. #2. Marvin/Speedy/Bibs for Chauncey Billups/Rasheed Wallace Billups, JJ, JS, Horf, Sheed. Here's the deal. Billups is on the blocks. He's got 3 years left on his contract. He's still an excellent PG/SG. Statwise, last year was the best career he had as a pro?!! So there's no deterioation of his game yet. I believe we can actually play him WITH Acie and Bibby as an OG. His 40% shooting from outside, championship experience, pressure defense, and Mr. Big Shot awareness makes him an interesting player to have. It was said that the Bucks were looking at him for ending contracts. The only ending contracts that they have are Charlie V. Desmond Mason, and Gadzurich??? Sheed to me is one of the most dominate PF/Cs in the game. He just don't know it. My thought about this trade is that it gives our young guys some experienced guys to play with and these guys would probably like to play for Woody. I still believe that the Bobcats will eventually make a big offer for Billups. Great trades. I would definitely do both. However, I like the second one because having Rasheed would allow us to start Josh at the 3. Can you imagine the foolishness that we could get into on both sides of the ball with: Billups, JJ, SMOOVE, HORF, and SHEED out there... First off, Billups will shut down most PGs. Sheed gives us legitimate size. Smoove at rover will tear teams a new one... Without injury, I think that team could challenge for a championship. That team is better than Detroit. Certainly. We address our team's weaknesses without sacrificing anything or creating a new weakness. Not to mention Billups and Rasheed both have a lot of respect for Mike Woodson. Wow. I wish we would really try to pull this trade off.
