Based on our cap situation for next year as the link shows, if we let every expiring walk we would be around 6 mill behind the tax threshold. Not to mention that the new CBA can bring a hard cap system that may put us closer to the tax. Its obvious that in order for this team to improve at a contender level, paying the tax is a must. If they're ok with being an 1rst round exit in the playoffs(best case scenario 2nd round) while paying max money to a player almost past prime then keep running way from the tax. Off course, they can trade him along with other players not named Horford or Smith, take a step back for 1 or 2 years, retool & come back to playoffs with a deeper & cheaper team.
I prefer the last move, cuz being mediocre for ever is just not good.
