There is some truth to the idea that if you are even remotely responsible with your spending that $120M is practically indistinguishable from $180M but that would be a very rare perspective among NBA players.  I'll applaud Murray with everyone else  here if he does lock into an extension this week and root for him to bust out next year.  Talk about a move that would earn you all kinds of good will with the fan base (showing them you want to be here, helping to build a stronger team, etc.).  I still have some questions around fit with a Trae/DM backcourt but hopefully Quin has some adjustments and new approaches that can help all our players work better together and excel individually and collectively that will make those questions a distant memory.

I think there's a huge difference when you are trying to create generational wealth. Taking a 60 million paycut impacts your investments and estate. I personally would never do it to show I am "loyal" to the team.

What if he signs it and we trade him next season when it doesn't work out? Or we get a new gm that doesn't feel the same sense of loyalty to him that fields gained from the sweetheart deal?

Maybe he will ask for a no trade clause or big trade kicker as part of the extension.

Well the FO will really need to make sure they have everything in place this off season if they planning to have 3 max contracts.

im not as worried about the money of those 3 combined as much as I’m worried about the overall team.

Trae, Murray, JJ, Siakam, Capela would be a good starting lineup.

Then Bufkin, Bogi, Bey, ???, Garuba on the bench…it’s not awful. Would be nice to go get Bol Bol as another body.

would be fantastic if we could somehow get Grant Williams added on this team. Then I could get over losing OO.

Not nearly enough 3 point shooting or spacing! This squad would make our offense in last year's Miami series look like the 7 seconds or less Suns.

Okay. I'm out. I'm done. No more hamster wheels for me.

Enjoyed being an Atlanta Hawks fan for the 50-ish years I did... or a lot of em, anyway... not so much the Isiah Rider period.

Bye. And I'm not even kidding. This is a stupid way to spend any more of whatever precious minutes I have left on this planet in this life, for me at least.

If anyone wants/needs to engage henceforth, try me at spook1320-generaluse@yahoo.com. Good luck to all in whatever personal or family or professional endeavors you pursue. It's been great being part of a community with you.

I feel you here. This is an abysmal move that is inexcusable. They could have made this deal at the deadline if they really wanted to avoid the tax.

    I think I've done a darn good job explaining why I'm offended. Haven't I?

    1. First, it's not clear that Nate did anything different from what Quin has just done... okay?

This is a straw man. Can you point me to where I stated Quin has the best slate of assistants? I simply said Nate didn't.

    2. Second, it's somewhat clear that Nate was a voice at the table, but was not the only one at the assistant coaching hiring table... okay?

Such is life. NBA head coaches get blamed for circumstances outside of their control all the time. Just look at Coach Bud getting fired after his brother died in the middle of a critical series. If you want to make the big bucks (pun intended), you have a huge responsibility on your shoulders to bear the criticism for everything that happens around you. This is why it's super important that you vet the organization you join just as they vet you.

I could argue that Nate failed by taking a job where he didn't have sufficient control over his own asst coaching hires (I find this really hard to believe considering he brought in his underqualified son to be an assistant)

On 5/31/2023 at 4:21 PM, sturt said:

    3. Third, the actual offending statement suggested that Nate deliberately hired lesser coaches because he was one to act out of fear... but that's not the Nate I ever saw... that sounds more like a baseless criticism rooted in a general animosity that shows up almost without fail anytime his name appears on this board these days... okay?

I personally don't care about Nate's motivation for bringing in a third-rate coaching staff.

    4. Fourth, who's really kidding whom... Chris Jent < Igor Kokoskov?... huh? And moreover, since when did the previously popular undefeated Joe Prunty get so unpopular?

For whatever reason, Nate didn't have the "pull" to keep Chris Jent on his staff. Maybe Jent didn't see a need to stay when Nate was telling our players that they should forego shooting the three to take it into the midrange or "attack the mismatch". I bet that would grind a master shooting coach's gears

    5. Even if we assume all the hiring was Demon Nate's, and Travis was just signing off on Nate's decisions... there is wisdom in hiring people who you have reason to believe are going to buy-in to your way of doing things instead of resisting your decisions/leadership... just ask Quin, since he just demonstrated that point... okay?

You must love how Tony Ressler instilled his son with power in the front office then, just like Nate did on the coaching staff. Good to know. Surrounding oneself by "yes men" is a clear sign of a weak leader.

I said a little more, but this captures enough to debunk the original assertion.

    How do you know that?

What mics and cameras did you have planted in practices to even formulate any opinion whatsoever?

Presumptuous. The contempt for Demon Nate is ridiculous.

Nate did his best. It wasn't good enough. A change needed to be made. But to imply that you question whether the man actually wanted to win is over the top.

Oh by the way... this is a new line of criticism. Previously, there had even been some who had openly hoped to see Quin keep one, some, or otherwise everyone on the 22-23 staff w/o McMillan for a last name.

But now that that's by the wayside, heck, let's get that pinata rehung on the tree branch for a little more bashing, please.

LOL who were these mysterious individuals? Every thread I read talked about how Demon Nate hired a scratch-n-dent staff to keep himself employed. I don't know whether that's true or not, but I hardly saw people defending his staff on the merits.

EDIT: Yikes I just saw you found a few posts about Prunty. I vehemently disagree with those takes, but to each their own.

Educate me. First time I've ever read that that was a point of contention. Previously, it was all about Nate's... Nate's... adherence to his long-held coaching routines.

(Not sure it even matters, either way, but I say that sincerely... educate me. What, as-if we should regard it as compelling if Trae calls out one of Quin's favorites a year from now???)

I see no evidence of that. None. And I can't help but notice, you only offered "it was the opinion of a lot of posters"... as-if a lot of posters here is some highly objective, highly informed jury? I don't even have anything that's been set in front of me as some serious reason to reconsider. Meanwhile, what I set in front of Gray, and now you, is that Nate McMillan's coaching may be worthy of your criticism and scrutiny... but to make this assertion is to suggest, from where I sit anyway, that Nate chose to hire assistants who would be less likely to contribute to his team's winning while under his watch... and again, that makes no sense in view of the quality of the man and even if you don't think highly of the man, the whole idea is counterintuitive since it's his win-loss record that ultimately is harmed anyhow.

It's really really really over the top around here.

    And another thing.

Did Nate even have full control over who was hired? Or was that a shared responsibility thing.

Pretty sure if we go back and dig out the archives, we find that it was shared. The GM was part of the decision, if not the lead dog. That's my recall anyway specific to the hire of Mike Longabardi. And Chris Jent. It may have varied.

Circling back to the original point... the comparison is flawed not only looking at Demon Nate, but again, who are these "brand name" coaches who Angel Quin supposedly is bringing to our bench? His lead guy was one of his coaches before... so, importantly, even though Igor had a cup of coffee as an NBA head coach, it's not as-if Quin's bringing in someone from outside his matrix in the interest of some new blood and new ideas. And it's arguable whether the more admirable hire would be Angel Quin's Igor or Demon Nate's Chris Jent.

Kinda pissed, really, that we're even still having these damning attitudes about one of the NBA's really good guys as a player and as a coach. The venom here is thick, and ubiquitous. And to the point of stupid. Lay off the guy. He doesn't deserve any of this. And by "this," I don't mean people shouldn't criticize his coaching, any more than people shouldn't criticize Quin's later (... and that day is coming, of course, lest any of us kid ourselves). These kinds of assertions go to the character of the guy. When it gets to that point, people have reduced the man to, not a real person, but a pinata... a pinata's entire purpose of being, of course, is to take a beating. That's how too many posters here think about Nate McMillan. It's wrong.

A big part of being a good coach is having a good staff. It's hard to argue that Nate brought the best and the brightest with him to ATL. Not sure why you're so offended by that.

The player development was lackluster at best, borderline nonexistent at worst... a function generally led by the assistant coaches.

Trae had public disputes with Nate's nepotism hire.

Nate could and should have done better.

I got the middle blue 🧊 I wear all the time they feel great! How are the others? Nice collection!

The TY2 is pretty tight around the ankle...its kinda elastic and squeezes hard for me at least. I kinda got used to it but definitely not as comfortable as the TY1. The Giannis's are roomy and comfy but definitely harder to match with stuff. I like the design tho.

was the goal to make the ugliest shoe possible?

    The first edition were great.

This year they were generic and ugly.

The one in the link isn't generic, but they tripled down on the ugliness.

I really like the look of the Trae 2s in this colorway. Those shoes are very tight on the ankles tho.

I have two different colorways of the TY1s.

Can't wait to get my TY3s!

Another year and a full offseason under Quin should help.

Probably Bill Simmons and his minions at The Ringer...they have some of the worse Hawks trade ideas. Then I see some Hawks fans liking those ideas, :blanky:

Come on, you didnt like the Trae Young for Tyler Herro and washed up Kyle Lowry trade proposal? You obviously don't know basketball.
