People like the 'idea' of him. I recall stories about him as BKN coach. Iirc, for a while he couch-surfed with his brother who lived up there because he was too busy to find a place or whatever. Folks figured he was at the facility hard working and whatnot. The whole 'gym rat' image people fall in love with. But the results were just kinda meh. He ran a rule-heavy, tight ship that was kinda collegial and his middling team of non-stars were fine with it. But once Kyrie and KD came around, it all fell apart. Because NBA players don't do well in collegial environments. So if you can't manage egos and your x's and o's are kinda so-so, what do you actually bring to the table? Maybe he's grown and gotten better with GS but, as I said, he's very much an unknown just like the rest.

It's mind-boggling how Atkinson's garnered this pristine reputation based off like 3 years of taking a middling roster to the low-middle. He may be a decent candidate but he's very much a question mark like all three rest
