Why don't stars take pay cuts?

OK, I know players like Garnett are so amazing, but really, does he need to be making all this money right now? With all his d@mn endorsements, he's a surefire $100 million + athlete, so why doesn't he cut his contract, much like Peyton Manning did, so the team could afford some athletes to bring out there?

Go ahead and hate on me for writing this. I think this is ridiculous players like Shaq just have to take 20 million + a year and eat up the team's payroll

LOL so I'm guessing you're not aware that Shaq voluntarily took a multi-million dollar pay cut a while back to give Miami flexibility to get more players.

Is it legal under the CBA for a player to restructure his deal and give back guaranteed money? I don't think it is. I know you can in football because of unguaranteed contracts, but I don't think you can in the NBA.

As I recall Miami agreed to pay him the max on his extension, and he told them to pay him $10 million less so they could try to get other players.

No, you can't restructure deals in the NBA. The only remotely resembling that is the ability to waive a trade kicker.

previous posts are accurate. the CBA and players' union won't allow 'restructing' ...and Shaq (as well as KG, who did it to an even greater degree) did take paycuts to assist their current teams...

Wow, and I see the Heat have so many young free agent signings to show for those pay cuts. I don't even know how they got that championship last year. San Antonio choked.

In case you didn't notice they went out and got jason williams, gary payton, antoine walker...

How good the heat are is irrelevant. Shaq took a paycut so they could bring players in and they brought players in.

He and KG are two of the few to take paycuts to help their teams when they didn't have to.
